Don Hedrick, former head coach at Walnut Grove for two years and Carthage in 1958-59, is appointed principal of Arlington. He succeeds Wilbur Hardin who resigned recently.
The Overman home hosted a cheerful lawn picnic dinner on Wednesday evening. Guests included Mr and Mrs Donald Ball and Mr and Mrs Robert Ball and family of Richmond, James Hartley of Rushville, Stuart McKnight and family of Wingate, Marion Schumpert of Jacksonville Florida, Mrs Ben Magruder of Starkville Mississippi, and Jack Overman with sons of Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Lee Patton return home from Cleveland after attending the 48th Triennial Conclave of the Knights Templar. About 5000 Knights from 49 states Canada Mexico and the Canal Zone attended the grand encampment. Patton belongs to the Knightstown Commandery which placed second in the A team drill competition.
Ronnie Fannin won the big prize at the Shirley Free Fair, a Monza Midget Racer worth about 400 dollars. He will display the prize at New Castle midget track this Saturday night, where the Shirley Lions Club presented the award.
Misses Pam Hunt Marilyn Pitts Cindy Brooks Cynthia Pearson Jane Hunt Sally Bush and Pam Clark attend a baton twirling clinic at Butler University Campus Indianapolis from Sunday until Friday.
Miss Ruth Henley Miss Florence Henley and Helen Hawkins returned to Carthage Friday from a week long vacation spent at Mackinaw City Michigan and other points of interest in Northern Michigan.
Mike Whitfield Larry Bash Jim Zimmerman and scoutmaster James Whitfield attended the Order of the Arrow Weekend Camp at Bear Creek Scout Reservation near Connersville. Whitfield Zimmerman and Bash earned an Ordeal Membership, while Mike Whitfield earned a Brotherhood Membership.

The annual Hunt Family Reunion will be held Sunday August 27 at the home of Mrs. Elmer Hunt west of Carthage. Friends are invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Eddie Jackson of Carthage R R 2 welcomed a son named Daniel Lee born August 11 while en route to Rush Memorial Hospital. Attending were Mr Jackson and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Jackson of Knightstown who helped during the birth.
Miss Jeannine Terhune Miss Sue Mosier and Miss Patsy Finch of Carthage spent Friday and Saturday at Franklin College campus in Franklin Indiana for a campus visit and tour of facilities.
Rev and Mrs Paul Mayfield and family of Carthage returned home Monday from a weeklong vacation. They spent two days at Shriner Lake in Northern Indiana and the rest visiting relatives in New Albany New York? and Shelbyville Kentucky.
The 1961 Fall Festival will run September 21 to 23 at the Community Center with rides and concessions moved earlier. An organizational meeting is set for 7 30 PM Monday August 21 in the Community Center auditorium, inviting all organizations churches and interested residents. A six member festival committee replaces the former single chairman and includes Bill Alexander Lewis Lafuse Morris Lukens Harold Ruby James Wells and Bob Winters with new activities such as an auction of new merchandise and a beard growing contest. Advance sale tickets are offered at the County Extension Office and the Farm Bureau office and at Farm Bureau Cooperative elevators in Rushville New Salem Homer Arlington and Mays. Advance purchases price tickets at 50 cents each. General admission to the Fair is 75 cents.
Rush County Better Crops Association seeks a farm to seed a wheat variety and fertilizer demonstration plot this fall. The 0.25 acre plot will test nine varieties and seven fertilizer areas, all harvested next summer. The farmer receives all grain produced and interested cooperators should contact the County Extension Office.
Swine leaders and others involved in the 4 H pig program will gather Saturday at 8 30 A M to set up equipment for the Eighth Annual Southeastern Indiana District Barrow Show and Sale.
Eighteen Rural Youth members met Tuesday at the conservation club for an annual picnic and hayride. They finalized concessions for the Fat Steer Show and Sale and laid out plans for a Record Hop this Saturday at Marsh's Foodliner parking lot from 8 to 11 PM. Bouncia Bill Baker will DJ and admission is 50 cents with soft drinks provided.
Purdue engineer John Foley will visit Rush County on Friday September 15 to offer advice on remodeling buildings planning new structures and efficient feed handling layouts to owners or tenants seeking his services during the day.
Plans are under way for a large turnout of former Purdue Ag students from Rush County to attend the Sixth Annual Eastern Indiana Purdue Ag Round-Up. The event Tuesday evening, September 12, at Ball State Student Center in Muncie features Dr. Dean Berkley of Indiana University speaking on Architects for a Better World.
Houseguests for two weeks at Mr. and Mrs. Logan Nelson include Mr. and Mrs. Tom Staley and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Staley of Vincennes. Last weekend visitors were Mr. and Mrs. John Corwin and daughter of Eaton Ohio. Saturday guests were Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Stant of Indianapolis and on Monday visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Baird of Indianapolis.
Miss Bernita Logan of Carthage and Miss Virginia Logan of Greenfield R. R. 1 join ten members from the Greenfield Church of God at Youth Church Camp in Hartford City this week.
At a Better Business Association meeting plans were laid for a Fall Festival Beard Growing Contest with three main classes awarding first prizes of $10. Merchandised runner up prizes will be donated by local merchants. Shaving permits will be sold for 50 cents to fundraising.
Former Purdue students across townships and at the County Extension Office may purchase tickets for the annual Roundup session dinner in Muncie. Prompt purchases ensure reserved seating.
Entries for the Fifteenth Annual Southeast Indiana District 4H Fat Steer Show and Sale near Rushville are due August 19. The event, held at Rush County Fair grounds on September 9, is sponsored by the Rushville Chamber of Commerce merchants. A total of 73 head are entered to date with 44 from Rush County, 13 from Randolph, 8 from Union, 4 from Henry, 3 from Shelby, and 1 from Franklin.
The Memorial Park at New Castle hosted the Diekbrader Drivers Safety Club Annual Picnic on Sunday with drivers, families, and guests enjoying a bountiful dinner, games, contests, and a social hour. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Dale May and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Windsor and daughter Dawn, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Windsor and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Fuchs and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gibson and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jackson.
The M Y F held an August 14 church annex gathering with Jean Terhune leading song and Reta Stanley reading scripture. Rev Mayfield spoke on the Lord's Prayer as Lou Magee led the business session planning weed-cutting, a Friday swimming party, August 20 service, and a August 27 visit to the Methodist Children's Home.
Mrs Sharon Hunt of R A 1 entered Hancock County hospital Sunday and underwent major surgery Monday morning. Her room number is 121.
Eighth Annual Barrow Show draws 228 barrows from eight counties led by 94 4H members. Rushville Junior Chamber organizes trophies ribbons and sale in Rush County Fair livestock pavilion. Judge Hobart Fones Purdue and auctioneer Col Hoyt Vanderbeck preside with classes for weight and breed.
Members of the Christian Women Fellowship and guests visited Martinsville on August 10 to tour the Kennedy Memorial Home. Administrator Dean Mason spoke in the chapel, then a building tour and a noon sack lunch followed. A brief program featured Mrs. Clyde Ruby singing with Arlene Ruby, and Mrs. George Moore speaking on Esther.
Army PFC Ronald A. DeWeese, 24, son of Cecil T. DeWeese of Carthage Ind, has arrived in Germany and joined the 585th Ordnance Company in Stuttgart. He entered the Army in July 1955 and serves as a fire inspector in the unit. His mother, Mrs. Eliza A. Thompson, formerly of Carthage, now resides at 335 E Main St Knightstown Ind.
Mr and Mrs Donald Ruby of Carthage and Mr and Mrs Max Ellis and son of Knightstown came home last week from a five day trip to Georgia and North Carolina. They visited Cary Ellis at Ft Gordon Georgia and Mike Ruby and family at Ft Bragg North Carolina. Cary Ellis will leave this week for Ft Dix and then Germany.
Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield and their children Joe and Amy arrived home Saturday evening after a ten day vacation at Dunes State Park in Northern Indiana.
The Carthage Brotherhood-Sisterhood holds its regular gathering on Monday August 21 1961 at 7 30 p m at the Community Center.
The Foust reunion gathered Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Foust and family in Carthage R. R. 1. Attendees included Harley Foust Gene Foust and families Bob Collins from Alexandria Everett Hunt and family from Anderson Fred Ullman Myrtie Foust and Gary Mills of Fortville Delphia Foust and son, and Miss Ann Franks of Indianapolis.
Mrs Charles Elmore hosted the August meeting on Tuesday evening with Mrs Jack Collins as co host. Sixteen members attended and president Edna Windsor led a lengthy business session. The club voted to sponsor the annual Fall Festival dance. Prizes were awarded in bridge and canasta to Mrs Stuart Morgan Mrs Frank Hampton Mrs John Gordon and Mrs Lee Patton.
Mr and Mrs Odest Logan and daughter Bernice returned from a trip to Miami where they visited H H Workman family and spent a day in St Augustine. They also visited Elva Logan’s parents at Head of Grassy Kentucky and toured the oldest school house in North America during their travels.
Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs James McGeorge were Mrs Pellie Weber Mrs Margaret Jones and Mr and Mrs Robert Jones and son and James Jones all of Bellevue Kentucky.

Dr. and Mrs. H R Hensler hosted a Sunday cookout with Mr. and Mrs. James R. Miller and children from Rushville and Ralph King of Newark New Jersey. The trio, once boyhood friends in Amboy Indiana, had not met in 23 years and enjoyed reminiscing during the gathering.
Carthage loses 10 to 6 to Bargain Barn after a 6 to 5 win over Greensburg in Shelbyville district play. Greensburg capitalized on four Carthage errors and opened with four runs, then Carthage rallied with five in the third and one in the fifth before Bargain Barn defeated Carthage 11 to 6.
The Indiana State Fair harness program features a resurfaced fast track and purses near a quarter million dollars. Key events include the Indiana Trotting and Pac ing Horse Association Stakes on September 2 and Grand Circuit days September 4 5 and 6 plus Hoosier Futurity races September 7. top races include the Horseman Futurity events on September 5 and the Horseman Stake and Fox Stake on September 6. Tickets are available at the Administration Building or by mail with prices ranging from $1 to $3.50.
Purdue University poultry scientists advise providing nests for maturing pullets whether on pasture or in confinement. Use the same nests planned for the laying house to reduce floor eggs, noting that pullets laying first eggs in nests likely avoid future floor egg trouble.

Five parades are planned during the 1961 Indiana State Fair from August 30 to September 7. Activities include a mass Boy and Girl Scout march on August 30, a High School Band Parade on August 31 with a record 105 bands, a Parade of Champions on September 2, a National Guard parade on September 3, and the Farmers Day Parade closing on September 7.

Carol Hawkins of Muncie stays with Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Hunt this week. Sunday visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fosnight of Hagerstown and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Davis of New Castle. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Pitts and daughter included Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Mohler and grandson Larry Joe Crouch of Oaklandon. Eugene I. Gardner and sons joined the Krammes Family Reunion at Gullys Rolling Acres. Nelson Cook and others from Arlington attended a family dinner at Ft. Wayne with Thomas Gallmeyer family. Mr. and Mrs. George Prickett of near Indianapolis were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Roland. The Zapfs from near Greenfield attended Connersville Fair and stayed for supper at the Roland home. Russell Roland visited Edward Roland and Mrs. Arthur Grose of Greenfield on Wednesday.
