Direct Selling Has Not Lowered Hog Prices
The peak period for direct hog selling in the United States ran 1924 to 1933, rising direct sales from 22.05 to 43.85 percent while packers margins stayed fairly steady. Even as processing and distributing costs fell in 1932 and 1933, direct selling remained high and producers’ returns did not decline. The USDA data show four of every five dollars in livestock income went to packers and payroll, with profits around one sixth of a cent per pound.
