Five Hoff Cousins Serve Across Armed Forces

Relatives of Carey and Detroit residents report extensive military service. 1st Lt William Hoff in Germany with a heavy tank division earned the distinguished service medal after battles in the Bulge and service near the Baltic Sea. Neil Hoff, also of the army air corps, received a distinguished service decoration after flying numerous missions. Ensign Edwin Hoff serves in the Navy in the South Pacific. Sgt Christine Hoff of the WAC is stationed in Leghorn Italy on a furlough touring Switzerland. Robert Lee Craven, a Detroit native, trained at Fort Benning after serving as a chemist in Italy and may join the occupation forces as an instructor.

Veterans Pfe Ernest P Fox Carey and Set Harold A Puchta Fostoria arrived in New York Friday aboard the SS Queen Elizabeth. Pvt Herbert R Schubert of Carey came to Boston August 28 on the SS Claymont Victory and then reached Carey for a 30 day furlough. Cpl Kenneth C Reinhart of route 1 Alvada was discharged from Camp Atterbury last Wednesday under the adjusted service rating plan.

Wiener Roast by Wesleyan Guild at Nine Oaks

The Wesleyan Guild Methodist Sunday school class will hold a wiener roast Monday evening at Nine Oaks south of Carey. Attendees should meet at the public library at 6 30. Disappearing Carey landmark torn down plans modern replacement

The large brick Stevens house on George and Esther Ranch Street, Carey Ohio, built in 1882, has been razed by owner George Remlinger. He salvages lumber and bricks for future homes while planning a modern replacement. the long list of original craftsmen is preserved on site.

School bus contracts authority cited in Ohio opinion

Columbus Aug 30 Attorney General Hugh Jenkins ruled that a board of education may contract with individuals to supply school bus drivers and transportation for pupils. The opinion sent to Wyandot County Prosecutor Russell C Price notes that nonboard drivers need not provide age moral character or physical certificates but must furnish bond and pass a physical exam.

Soldier Henry Lortz Receives Honorable Discharge

Pfc. Henry B. Lortz arrived home Friday from Indiantown Gap Pennsylvania after an honorable discharge from the U S Army. He served 37 months in the European theater earning 7 battle stars with Co B 3053rd Engineer Combat Battalion and earlier served in amphibious forces. Homeward Bound James Cornely Arrives With 17th Airborne

Cpl James Cornely of Kirby Ohio will return to the United States with the 17th Airborne Division as it deactivates. He served as a cook in the 325th Glider Infantry 82nd Airborne, and earned the Combat Infantry Badge Purple Heart with cluster Presidential Citation Invasion Arrowhead. He participated in Sicily Italy Normandy Holland Ardennes Central Germany and wore the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. His parents Mr and Mrs John J Cornely reside in Kirby Ohio.

SGT McConnell Head Set Visits Family News

SGT McConnell and Mrs W R McConnell spent a week with the sergeant's parents in Bowling Green and visited Mrs McConnell's parents in Carey. He arrived from Italy August 19 and will report to Camp Atterbury Indiana September 23 after a Pacific bound ship was stopped en route. Mrs McConnell, a public school music instructor in Cardington, has a three week leave of absence.

Purchased Farm Near Carey Changes Hands

Richard Schindler of near New Riegel bought 176 acres east of Carey from Harold Krock, formerly HE F Thome’s. Krock bought a Bucyrus route 3 farm and moved there last week. Schindler will rent the purchased farm but has not yet secured a tenant.

Carey man in 99th Infantry Division helps topple German fortress

Gerald L. Stoll of Carey Ohio fought with Company I 3893rd Infantry Regiment in the 99th Infantry Division. He and his unit, nicknamed the Checkerboard division, played key roles in breaking Siegfried Line advancing with Hodges 1st Army then Rhine crossing and Ruhr Pocket cleanup before joining Patton's 3rd Army for the Danube push. Stoll now serves with the 36th reinforcement battalion.

In Wyandot county on Saturday August 18 the sheriff sold five tracts from the Emma Stief and H B Stief estates. Odd Fellows bought the 3 story 120 HE Findlay St building for 9700 with a 99 year lease on the third floor and second floor rental. Tract 2 406 S West St was purchased by Ervin H Tong and wife for 6100 after appraised 6750. Tract 3 0.87 acre on West St north of Findlay Branch sold for 500 from appraised 750. Tracts 4 and 5 to Carey Handle and Lumber Co. tract 4 about 2.5 acres appraised 350 sold for 700. Tract 5 1.35 acres with a 124 ft strip owned by Russell Gottfried sold for 100 from 150. Handle and Lumber Co plans to move a sawdust pile to fill in the Stief tile yard area.

Mrs Sarah Suber Recuperates After Pneumonia Stay

Mrs Sarah Suber of Carey, staying in Klamath Falls Oregon, recently battled pneumonia and spent weeks hospitalized. She traveled to Oregon in February to be near her son Cpl Richard Suber at a Marines rest camp near Klamath Falls. She plans to return to Carey soon with her son on leave.

Army Veteran Charles H Kloepfer Discharged at Atterbury

S/Sgt Charles H Kloepfer was discharged August 1 at Camp Atterbury after 4 years and 7 months in the U S Army. He participated in the African invasion with the armored infantry and served two years with military police in Sicily. He returned to the States last January and worked as train guard on the Pennsylvania from Crestline to Pittsburgh to Chicago.

Destruction of 45 to 65 Registrant Files Ordered

Morrow county draft board under Washington order destroyed selective service records for men aged 45 to 65 who registered in 1942. Questionnaires were mutilated and papers salvaged while military data from about 808000 Ohioans statewide were erased. Souvenir cards may remain for some registrants.

Wheat Field Fire Destroys 10 Acres Near Carey

A 17 acre wheat stubble field on Floyd Herbert's farm six miles south of Carey burned 10 acres before extinguishment. Clover in the field was ruined. Wharton firefighters faced another blaze at the Tong home and arrived too late to save the field. Herbert thanks rescuers, especially the Wharton department.
