Carey residents are urged by Fire Chief Orion Wilgus to inspect furnaces water heaters incinerators and room heaters before cold weather. He stresses proper ventilation clean chimneys safe venting and professional installation to prevent accidents and carbon monoxide danger and to save on fuel costs.
The Carey Times shows three exceptionally large tomatoes brought in by J A Haines of W Findlay Street. One tomato weighs 24 pounds, another 1 pounds 8 ounces, and the third 1 pound 6 ounces. A striking display of luscious produce.
Shuffleboard News won first place by defeating Clarence Reinhart and Lucille Hoopf in the tournament held Tuesday night Aug 25. In the consolation game Irma Smith and Lee Callahan defeated Martha Reinhart and Henry Pieracini. The Friday night tournament was not played because of intermittent rain. All members are invited to the present Tuesday night for officer elections. Members competed in the 2nd annual Michigan Ohio Shuffleboard Round Robin at Lakeside last weekend. Michigan teams won 127 to 115. Ohio's Pat Motz and Farrel Bruner posted 20 and 2. Denver Donelson tied for 11th in singles. In the North American Tournament 76 players from Ohio Michigan New Jersey and Florida entered. Denver Donelson won the men's open and Harold Shiley placed 4th. Mrs Donelson won the women's open. Mary Pace and Lloyd Long.
The Free Will Baptist Church relocates from 211 E Findlay St to 316 N Patterson St. Services will be at 7 30 p m on Saturdays Sundays and Tuesdays. Public is welcome.
Veterans of World War I Barracks No 1798 will gather at the V F W Club in Upper Sandusky on Wednesday at 8 p m for their weekly meeting. The group invites all veterans to attend and participate.
Two check forgers, William Edward Brady of St Petersburg Florida and Janet Ann Carpenter of Pickney Michigan, are accused of cashing multiple checks on Friday August 21. Brady cashed a $25 check at Harry's Pharmacy and later $50 at Carey Hotel and $38 at Carey Foodland, while Carpenter cashed $50 at Burson Hale clothing. Brady had been released from Toledo police the day before and warrants have been issued for both suspects. Police urge caution in cashing checks for strangers.
Vanlue School will start a full day of classes on Wednesday September 9 from 830 AM to 330 PM with busses on last year’s schedule. Kindergarten runs 830 to 11 AM and students ride morning buses with parents picking up at 11. District lists faculty across grades and subjects and notes new teacher orientation and upcoming local teachers meeting.
University horticulturists prepare a 40 by 100 foot plot at Don Scott airfield Franklin County for the Farm Science Review this fall. The display includes celeriac New England spinach salsify chicory chives and new tomato and pepper varieties along with hybrids of turnips cucumbers and cabbage. The show runs September 30 October 1 and 2.
Clyde Swartz of 119 S. Muncie Street told police two dogs kept in a backyard pen were shot in the head, removed from the pen and left behind a shed. Investigators suspect a .22 rifle. no neighbors heard the act on August 22. Investigation continues.
The Carey Post Office will be closed on Labor Day. The lobby remains open for box holders but no deliveries or window service will be available.
Mathern's Bakery will close from September 8 through October 8 for vacation and repairs.

Ohio Department of Health Mobile X-Ray Unit operated August 26 to 29 in Wyandot County. It visited twelve locations including Upper Sandusky Sycamore and Nevada. Nurses and volunteers thanked for help. list of volunteers and local participants provided.
Governor Rhodes designates August 31 through September 7 as Labor-Safety Week to urge safe driving during the Labor Day holiday. Officials predict 23 traffic deaths and 950 injuries in Ohio during the 78 hour period, with enforcement to be stepped up by state and local police and backed by business and labor groups.
Re appraisement of real estate properties is under way in Carey and will cover the entire county during the campaign, with completion expected in the near future.
A back to school dance is held Saturday September 5 at 8 p.m. at the Otis Rigney Dance Studio.
The Beta Psi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority will host the Junior King and Queen contest with 20 entrants, 11 girls and 9 boys, to raise funds for Wyandot County School for Retarded Children and community projects. Prizes include cash, trade, and store gifts. winners receive two 5x7 photos and flowers from Carey Greenhouse. finalists earn various gifts and theater passes.
Students from Wyandot County School for Retarded Children, guided by aides, rode an American Legion bus to the Ohio State Fair for a day of activities. Gov Rhodes and officials were introduced, a 300 piece All-Ohio High School Boys Band performed, and rides and displays filled the day. Approx 1500 helium balloons were given, with free rides sponsored by Gooding Amusement Co. The event ended with milk and cookies on the return trip.

Mrs R Ben Hosler of Cleveland formerly Cora Ellen Schira and her husband, a U S Marshall, attended the first assembly of U S Marshals in Washington. While the men met Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Mrs Kennedy hosted the wives at Hickory Hill. The next day the Hoslers met President Lyndon B. Johnson in the White House rose garden. The couple are former Findlay residents.
A Labor Day Shuffle board tournament will crown four top men and four top women with trophies. The singles event starts Friday night and runs until round robin play completes. All members are invited to a Labor Day potluck dinner on September 7 at 6 p.m. served by the September refreshment committee.

Headliners include the Lacey Troupe the Royal Family of the Hungarian Big Top famed for a unique ball and ramp routine. The Redcans from Holland and other continental stars join an international lineup for America’s Circus Internationale.
Carey Chapter No 159 RAM resumes regular meetings after summer recess. The first meeting moves from Monday to Tuesday at 7 30 p m due to Labor Day. All members urged to attend as important business will be discussed. R L Smalley HP.
First Methodist Church announces new hours starting Sunday morning. Sunday School begins at 9 a.m. and the worship service follows at 10 a.m. The schedule is half an hour earlier than usual.
Mr and Mrs Joe Newhard and daughter Ann return home from Aspen Colorado after a few days vacation. They spent three weeks touring Colorado with Mrs Newhards sister and family including Mr and Mrs M Z Graham and Carolyn of Ft Wayne Indiana. They were met at Asport by Mr Newhard who had attended Bowling Green State University Summer School for a teaching certificate.
The Kiwanis Club will not meet Monday Sept 7 due to Labor Day and will resume Sept 14. The feature speaker is Frank Jackson of Bucyrus on credit conditions in a small town. Jackson is a former Carey Kiwanian with the US Merchantile Systems.
