A state fire marshal lecture outlines how fires start without flames, focusing on spontaneous combustion in Ohio. Grease on rags, linseed oil, and sawdust fuel many incidents, with examples from factories, closets, and oiling floors.
Hiram J. Aber a Carey resident died at home on North Street Sunday October 4 at four o clock from Brights disease after a four year struggle. Born October 17 1842 in Schuyler County New York he married Priscilla Mossey April 6 1861 at Fredericksburg Virginia. They lived in Virginia Fort Wayne Indiana TilIa and Carey where he remained. He was father to William F Mary and Eila all at home. Funeral held October 6 at 1 30 pm at the home with Rev E L Spaide officiating. Burial at Spring Grove Cemetery with a quartet and several pallbearers. Denoting him as an upright man the community noted his good character.
Forty Hours Devotion will be observed at Our Lady of Consolation church beginning Sunday morning. High mass at noon will be sung and followed by a procession of children and priests. Low mass at one. Evening preaching services and Benediction scheduled. Father John G. Maud Stahl daughter of Mr and Mrs John Stahl was pricked by a corn last Thursday. The wound worsened with blood poisoning setting in by Friday. Dr M N Zeis treated the injury. swelling subsided after lancing and the foot began to improve.
Between forty and fifty carloads of onions have been shipped from Carey on the Big Four road so far this season.
Property transfer records show Albert H. Allen conveying an undivided half interest in forty acres in Crawford township to Harriet C. Alsop for 3100 dollars. The county fair proceeds in good shape with premium claims to be paid, while voters will decide at the general election if the fair ground should be purchased.

Mrs. M. B Smith and Mrs. George Ash led the fancy work department with about twenty exhibits each. Both received fifteen first premiums as the department expanded to operate in an extra booth, underscoring notable county fair success.
DeWitt M. Hover state president of the Loyal Temperance Legion spent Monday evening in town and was entertained at the J. D. Larmonth home. He left Tuesday for Akron to attend the state convention. A Carey League reception for Hover drew about thirty five guests with an engaging program and a talk on Legion work.
Sunday's ball game between Arlington and Carey was canceled due to Arlington's no show. A mixed team faced the Clippers and won 11 to 10, with manager Campbell arranging the lineup. Next Sunday Sycamore to visit for Clippers clash.
Rev. E. L. Spaide left for Wepakonetta to join the synodical convention of the Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Society. He then proceeds to Crestline for the Wit tenburg Synod opening Friday. F. D. Hurd goes Saturday as a church delegate. Synod ends Tuesday with return expected next Wednesday.
Clarence Wise of near Wharton cut his ankle on a corn sled three weeks ago. The wound worsened after initial treatment and blood poisoning set in. Dr. I N Zeis treated the ankle with lancing. Wise is now much improved.

Clem Corwin, a Big Four railroad fireman, nicked his hand with a safety pin a week ago. Blood poisoning followed and the hand swelled, requiring lancing. He is improving but still off duty.
Scott McKinnon delivered a ten pounds six ounce radish to the office Monday morning. The vegetable measures two feet one inch in length and nineteen inches in circumference, a potential new record.
The Ladies of the United Evangelical church host a pumpkin pie social at the parsonage Friday evening October 10. Everyone is invited. Coffee and pie will be served for ten cents. Other dishes available for those not wanting pie.
The contract for cementing Spring Run along the Big Four right of way has been let to Mr Yeager of Indianapolis and work may begin soon.
Two new postal clerks join the Hocking Valley trains one on No. 33 northbound at 10 56 and another on No. 86 southbound at 6 15. The line now has three clerks each way daily.
