Word has reached Carey that Paul E Dickie Clouser was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U S Army on May 6 at Fort Knox Kentucky. He trained in a medium armored division and is the son of Dr and Mrs Paul R Clouser of Middletown Pennsylvania. Clouser’s former pastor Th Clouser served at Christ Lutheran Church in Carey. After commissioning he visited his parents for a week in Middletown before returning to Fort Knox for further training.

W G Bradley has sold his cleaning and pressing business and the laundry agency to Mr and Mrs Donald Myers who have taken possession. The establishment will be known as Mathers Cleaners. Williams Wounded in Philippine Campaign Reports
Private Andrew J. Williams aged 22 was wounded May 1 during the Philippine campaign. Son of Mr and Mrs Ray Williams of one mile north of Adrian, he was hit in the left shoulder by shell fragments and convalescing in an army hospital. Williams serves in an infantry regiment of the 37th division, entered the army in March 1948, trained at Camp Joseph I. Robinson Arkansas, and left for overseas in September 1943.

In Germany the 393rd regiment doughboys captured a pillbox and lined up seven soldiers including Gerald L. Stell and Haley D. Larlow to man a newly captured prison cage. A German officer arrived, joking about chow but facing the officer’s forceful entry and surrender.

T/Sgt. Donald L. Lee, son of Mrs. Addison Lee of Vanlue, is awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious action in eastern France from October 24 1944 to March 21 1945. The citation commends courage, aggressive fighting spirit, skilled leadership, and effective deployment of his men, with numerous enemy casualties. He also recently received the Purple Heart for a finger wound from shrapnel.

Sailor Junior Simonis Survives Laffey Battle Off Okinawa
Junior Simonis son of Mr and Mrs C C Simonis of Carey survived a two hour battle off Okinawa aboard the destroyer Laffey after a 22 plane attack. The ship sustained multiple hits including bombs and near misses. 31 crew died and 60 wounded. Simonis, a sound mate, helped fight fires and aid the wounded as the ship fought to remain afloat. The Laffey is now in Seattle for display in the seventh war loan drive and will be repaired before returning to sea.
