Carey Man Paul E Clouser Commissioned Second Lieutenant

Word has reached Carey that Paul E Dickie Clouser was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U S Army on May 6 at Fort Knox Kentucky. He trained in a medium armored division and is the son of Dr and Mrs Paul R Clouser of Middletown Pennsylvania. Clouser’s former pastor Th Clouser served at Christ Lutheran Church in Carey. After commissioning he visited his parents for a week in Middletown before returning to Fort Knox for further training.

Carey Cooperative opens modern frozen food locker plant

The Carey Cooperative Food Lockers Inc. begins construction of a one story facility on S Vance street designed to quick freeze and store locally produced vegetables fruits and meats at zero. More than 200 lockers already reserved customers expect higher living standards as families store food and buy wholesale in quantity to save money with quick frozen garden fresh items available months later.

Carey Kiwanis Receives Honors At Monday Meeting

The Carey Kiwanis club gathered Monday evening at Trubey's restaurant. W. McChesney Jr. praised Cloyce Wentling for updating the service men roster. Four guests were introduced: Sgt. Paul Kirlau, James Ward, Jack Lorentz and Joyce Wentling. Ward spoke on his Army Air Force engineering experiences and noted a 47 year service record with discharge under the point system.

4 H Club Meets Second Girl's 4 H Session

The 4 H Club held its second meeting May 25 in the public library basement with Mrs Earl Robison as leader and 12 girls present. Dues are 1 cent. Shirley Gatchell resigned as secretary treasurer. Carol Harper became assistant secretary treasurer. After business, games were played. The next meeting is June 12 at 2 pm at the high school.

Bradley Sells Cleaning and Pressing Business

W G Bradley has sold his cleaning and pressing business and the laundry agency to Mr and Mrs Donald Myers who have taken possession. The establishment will be known as Mathers Cleaners. Mr Bradley will continue alterations as before. He came to Carey from Newark in 1894 and had been a tailor with several firms. In 1920 he opened the dry cleaning and pressing shop.

Carey Native Joins Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Training

Joseph Eugene Jacoby 18, seaman second class, U S N R, from Carey Ohio, arrived at Norfolk Virginia to train for duties aboard a new destroyer of the Atlantic Fleet. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Jacoby of S Lake Street Carey and was graduated from Carey High School this year.

Carey village announces clean-up week details

The village of Carey sets a cleanup week starting Wednesday June 6. The truck will begin on the east side of Carey and collect all rubbish in suitable containers near the curb for curbside pickup, as stated by Clerk Jacob Nitraver.

Mr and Mrs Linus Reinhart of Carey received a War Department telegram stating their son S/Sgt Donald W Reinhart returned to military control on May 3 1945. He served with a B 17 crew stationed in England and was reported missing October 10 1945, later listed as a German POW.

Williams Wounded in Philippine Campaign Reports

Private Andrew J. Williams aged 22 was wounded May 1 during the Philippine campaign. Son of Mr and Mrs Ray Williams of one mile north of Adrian, he was hit in the left shoulder by shell fragments and convalescing in an army hospital. Williams serves in an infantry regiment of the 37th division, entered the army in March 1948, trained at Camp Joseph I. Robinson Arkansas, and left for overseas in September 1943.

Nazi turns up for chow lands in prison cage in Germany

In Germany the 393rd regiment doughboys captured a pillbox and lined up seven soldiers including Gerald L. Stell and Haley D. Larlow to man a newly captured prison cage. A German officer arrived, joking about chow but facing the officer’s forceful entry and surrender.

Lee Earns Bronze Star for Meritorious Action in France

T/Sgt. Donald L. Lee, son of Mrs. Addison Lee of Vanlue, is awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious action in eastern France from October 24 1944 to March 21 1945. The citation commends courage, aggressive fighting spirit, skilled leadership, and effective deployment of his men, with numerous enemy casualties. He also recently received the Purple Heart for a finger wound from shrapnel.

Air Medal award to S Sgt Henry N Kuhn Jr at Westover Field

At Westover Field Massachusetts on May 22 1945 S/Sgt Henry N Kuhn Jr received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters in a decoration ceremony. The award was presented by Col G A McHenry post commander for meritorious achievement during aerial flight as part of his combat crew training.

Three Vanlue Teachers Resign From District

Vacancies in the teaching staff at Vafriae school have been announced by Supt. Ercil Hinkle. Mrs Harold Sluts, a history, mathematics and English instructor, has resigned to devote time to home duties. Miss Marjorin McGranatan, science and Latin instructor, has taken a position in Wapakoneta schools. Mrs Clara Eelen, music and English instructor, has resigned but her plans are not announced. Harry Thompson, school janitor, has also resigned.

Canton Picnic for Swiss Breeders in Gibsonburg

All Swiss breeders and families are invited to attend the Canton picnic at the American Legion hall in Gibsonburg on Sunday June 3. Attendees should bring their own table service coffee will be furnished. A tour of local herds is planned in the afternoon.

Sailor Junior Simonis Survives Laffey Battle Off Okinawa

Junior Simonis son of Mr and Mrs C C Simonis of Carey survived a two hour battle off Okinawa aboard the destroyer Laffey after a 22 plane attack. The ship sustained multiple hits including bombs and near misses. 31 crew died and 60 wounded. Simonis, a sound mate, helped fight fires and aid the wounded as the ship fought to remain afloat. The Laffey is now in Seattle for display in the seventh war loan drive and will be repaired before returning to sea.
