Free City Delivery Arrives in Carey Effective June 1 1916

The Carey post office will start free city delivery on June 1 1916 after a postal department order. Postmaster Zahn and assistant John Jacoby are canvassing households and training carriers. Two youths Clarence Hagley and Samuel Gunther secured $50 monthly positions with Sunday work, as delivery becomes a daily home service at 9:30 am 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

Feast Opens With Sermons and Pilgrims Gathered

The Feast of Our Lady of Consolation began Saturday with Sunday services and processions for parish members. Many visitors filled local homes as Rev. Fridolin Stauble of Indianapolis preaches thrice daily. Bishop Schrembs arrives for confirmation and a Sunday sermon, with numerous Franciscans and other priests assisting at the event.

City Council Adopts Bids and Plans for Street Work

At Monday night’s meeting the council signed several bills for labor and materials including street labor by Carr and Keller and curb work on Vance street. Hart and McGill presented numbering plans for residences and lots for free mail delivery. Hart was hired for 24.00. An ordinance for land purchase from Millard Steen as a dumping ground was passed.

Memorial Sunday Services At Methodist Church

Memorial Sunday observances will be held at the Methodist church at the usual forenoon hour with Dr J W Gibson delivering the sermon. The church choir will provide music including a new song by a Grand Army man as an antidote to I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be A Soldier. Veterans plan to attend in a body assembling at the G A R hall by 9 45 oclock with soldiers from all wars invited to join the parade escorted by the Uniform Rank of Knights of Pythias.
