Militia Called At Tiffin Amid Molders Strike Tension

Eighth regiment O N G from Tiffin was ordered to be ready as word spread of a strike at Webster Construction Company. A guard shot and killed a striker on Wednesday night, causing fear of Thursday night violence. The call was to prepare for possible militia deployment, but police and authorities ultimately held the situation without aid from the miltias.

Parcels Post Returns Spoiled Food Surprise

Postmaster Wm Zahn notes the parcels post sometimes carries edible items that spoil during transit. Delayed dress chickens and other perishables cause disruptions as mail sacks are opened. He recalls dressed chickens large fish and a bird consignment that lingered at Carey office before a claimant arrived.

Painter Drue Thomas Transferred to Sandusky Division

Drue Thomas, head of the paint gang on the Springfield division of the Big Four, is reassigned to the Sandusky division where a dedicated paint crew is to operate for the first time. He supervised last year’s local station painting and will relocate his family from Springfield once a house is found.

Martin Mathern, from Alsace Lorraine, recalls school in German mornings and French afternoons. He traveled through European countries and settled in the United States where he ran a bakery. He learned English to operate there and can manage German French and English despite imperfect spelling.

A. D. Lenner visited the Times office Tuesday morning with a remarkable giant hen egg. It measured nine inches around the long way and seven and a half inches in girth, weighing five ounces and five and a third drams. The egg came from Mrs Alvin Lenner’s Plymouth Rocks in the family chicken yard.

Henry Smith and Herbert Smith of Findlay rent the John Stahl room on Vance street and will operate as Carey Vulcanizing Works. The junior Mr. Smith previously worked with Haywood Tire and Equipment Co. in Indianapolis.

Train fright causes buggy wreck near town

On a Saturday around nine PM Mrs. Nicholas Filliater and her son Edmond, six miles north of town, were returning home when a northbound Big Four train frightened their colt. The buggy ran away, throwing the occupants and breaking two wheels. Mrs. Filliater was badly injured. The buggy was new this spring.

New Chimney Block Machine At Snyder Cement House

A new chimney block machine has been installed at the Snyder cement house. It is the first of its kind in the locality and the only one whose product is approved by the fire underwriters. The cement house runs at full capacity this spring and remains behind in its work with two machines and a power mixer kept going continuously.
