Carey Derby Day Draws Warm Weather and Big Crowd

Pleasant weather and a large crowd supported Carey Conservation Sportsman's Association third annual Derby Day at the club grounds. Awards went to numerous boys, girls, and adults with cash prizes, several tagged fish, and a jackpot fish offering a $15 value before Labor Day 1963 and $10 after.

Memorial Day Parade Planned in Carey

Carey will celebrate Memorial Day on Wednesday May 30 with a traditional parade. American Legion Earl Green Post 344 directs the event. Participants meet at 9 am on S Patterson Street near the Methodist Church and proceed to Spring Grove Cemetery for services led by Rev J Frank Ferguson, then to St Marys Cemetery for Our Lady of Carey Seminary services.

Carey High School Award Day program honors students

Carey High School held its Award Day on Wednesday May 16 in the school auditorium. Honors included American Legion Essay Awards for freshmen to seniors, Bugle Echo awards, Booster Club scholarships totaling 185 dollars, valedictorian and salutatorian honors, F H A awards, stenography and typewriting certificates, Caryatid editor awards, and junior high track and baseball recognitions.

Vanlue High School will hold its 70th baccalaureate at 2 p.m. and commencement at 8 p.m. Sunday May 27 in the school auditorium. Rev Isaac Johnston will deliver the baccalaureate sermon. Dr D L Arnold of Kent State will give the commencement address. Rhoda Perkins and Shirley Ann Higginbotham will deliver the salutatory and valedictory respectively. Lorene Oman will present the class and John Oman will award diplomas. The program includes an invocation by Rev James Wolfe, mixed chorus, and a senior girls sextet.

Cravens to Observe 50th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Ray Cravens of Hancock county will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday May 27 with a family dinner at the Silver Spur Restaurant south of Carey. They were married May 14 1912 in the Vanlue Methodist parsonage by Rev J S Snodgrass. They have two children a daughter Nina Kliesch Vanlue and son Ralph Cravens Toledo three grandchildren and one great grandchild. The Cravens home will host relatives at 2 30 p m Sunday.

Duffields Buy House at 213 Dow Street After Fire

Mr and Mrs William Duffield and their sons Jim John Tommy and Billy moved into the house at 213 Dow Street after purchasing it from the Roy Platt Sr estate. They had lived at the former C J Walters farm northeast of Carey since their home north of Carey burnt last fall.

Village council approves two ordinances and street work

The village council passed Ordinance No. 558 banning loitering and midnight to 6 am vehicle use in parks with written authorization, and Ordinance No. 559 restricting speeds under 15 mph in parks and public lots. They also plan 900 feet of Clay Street grading at $6,300, study curb options, consider wage increases, and table prisoner housing contract details at 50 cents per meal, $1 daily incidentals, and $1 turnkey per prisoner.

Windstorm Causes Damage at Two Farms Friday

An NE windstorm Friday caused major damage at Delmar Grubel and John A Greer farms. Trees were broken, a large portion of Grubels barn roof was torn, Greer barns lost roof sections and slate from a house, the television area bent, and the Point Drive In carport was lifted and posts pulled. Other damage may have gone unreported.
