The schedule lists events from May 1 to May 23. Includes Junior Senior banquet May 1, Farewell Chapel May 1 at Christ Lutheran Church, Baccalaureate May 18, Commencement May 22, and grade cards distributed May 23 at 9 a.m.
The Carey High School Alumni association hosts a reception and dance on Saturday May 24 at 9 30 p m in the school auditorium. Admission is 75 cents per person with Al Cleveland and his orchestra providing the music. Tickets are available at Harrys Drug Mapes Rexall Drug or the Gas office.
Today May 8 marks 45 years since Dr Adolph Constien and Roxana Hoke wed in 1902 at high noon in Upper Sandusky. He began practice in Carey before moving to Upper Sandusky exposing a long career from 111 1 2 W Wyandot and upstairs 111 1 2 W Wyandot now remains his office where he works daily.
The Carey high school athletic association closes the season with an undefeated football season and a strong basketball run. The year totals receipts amount to 4427 dollars 63 cents with major costs including admission tax 20 percent bleachers 641 officials 3300 insurance 107 and equipment contributing to total expenses of 4600 dollars 54 cents. After paying all bills a balance of 235 dollars 54 cents remains in the treasury.
G L Schlueter Marion office manager urged qualified persons to apply for retirement or survivors benefits under the old age and survivors insurance program. He will be at Carey municipal building at 3 00 p m on Tuesday May 20 to accept applications and conduct related business.
Leo T Jones owner of the New Carey Theatre leaves for Hollywood California for a three to four week tour of major production studios to preview upcoming films to be shown at the Carey theatre.
The Faithful Followers class of the Methodist Sunday school will hold a potluck dinner this Thursday evening at 7 o clock in the church parlors. Each person should bring their own table service. The winning side in a recent membership contest will be guests of the losers.
Final arrangements complete for a May 18 baccalaureate service at the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation. Carey high school graduates 19 Catholics, 17 from focal parish and 2 from St Nicholas parish. Rev Darien Gimmerman OFM is speaker. Parish choir and 26 male voices directed by Ralph Brown with Vincent Brown at organ. Solemn Benediction closes the service. Public invited.
A crowd watched Herman Fredritz throw a no-hit exhibition Monday night at the students field. Carey Merchant's team jumped to a 9 run pace early, Donelson and Pat Logsdon led with two singles each, and Don Yingling produced a pivotal throw in the sixth inning to stop a Student rally after Donald's misstep at second.
Incorporation papers were filed in Columbus for Grastone Amusement Company of Upper Sandusky. The firm is listed with 140 shares no par value. Incorporators are Therese Stone Leo T. Jones and C A Naus. Hall and Naus serve as attorneys.
Jus tus lodge No. 393 Knights of Pythias will confer the rank of Esquire on three candidates May 20 and the rank of Knight on May 27. All members are urged to be present, followed by a banquet. Charles Iden, C. C.
Mr and Mrs. EH Gottfried of southeast of Carey took their 33 year old grandson Lynn Home to Bucyrus City hospital for observation on Tuesday morning. Lynn is the son of Mrs. John Cole of Houcktown and makes his home with the Gottfrieds.
The Mary-Martha class of Christ Lutheran Sunday school will hold a rummage sale in the church basement on Wednesday May 21. It will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Memorial poppies for Poppy Day May 24 were received by the Earl Green unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. The paper crepe flowers are made by disabled veterans at the State Soldiers and Sailors Home and symbolize memory for those who died in World Wars I and II.
Funeral services were held for Henry C Peterman 22 a senior at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware at his Huntington Long Island home after a May 2 airplane crash near Utica New York Peterman a U S Army Air Corps lieutenant was en route to Huntington for a wedding when the accident occurred Also killed were companion W F Kline and Miss Mary Calista Newhard Mary Newhard is Mrs George Newhard of Carey Ohio and a fellow Ohio Wesleyan student Peterman and Kline were part of the wedding party in Huntington the crash occurred while returning from Carey Ohio where they had left May 4 for May 7 services
Miss Jane Thomas daughter of Mr and Mrs Edgar Thomas from near Carey and Miss Glenna Peters daughter of Mrs John Peters near Arcadia will graduate May 21 from the Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute in Vancleve Kentucky after completing a three year course. Miss Thomas plans to move to San Francisco to join the Penter Mission program and Miss Peters will pursue graduate studies to prepare for missionary work in Japan.
The local review of the Woman's Benefit Association will hold a regular meeting Friday evening May 16 promptly at 8 15 o'clock. Following lodge a white elephant sale will be held. All members are urged to be present.
The Carey Lions club hosts a ladies' night banquet Thursday at 6 30 p m at Trubey's restaurant. Guest speaker is W OD Humphrey of Findlay, personnel director of Porcelain Products Inc.
The Past Chiefs' association of Carey Temple No. 169 Pythian Sisters will meet this Thursday afternoon in Castle Hall. A potluck supper will be served.
The 1947 Carey high school senior class will hold its baccalaureate service at Christ Lutheran Church next Sunday at 8 p m. The Rev. Wade H. Koons will preach On This Threshold You Stand with assistance from Rev. Dr. O B Ford of First Methodist Church and Rev. B L Lee of Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Carey will open its baseball season Sunday May 18 against Upper Sandusky at the Upper park with a 2 15 p m start. Upper recently beat Marseilles 6 4 with one hit allowed. The roster lists De Amicis Underwood Lab Kreps Hayman Heck Logsdon Donelson Myers Yingling Ward Pieranunzio Keckler and Chester with Pieranunzio and Keckler as versatile backups. A busy schedule follows with May 25 at Carey May 25 double header May 25 at Carey and more games against Norwalk Sandusky Marseilles. Next week the writer plans to cover the Upper game.
Miss Gertrude Strahm, daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Strahm of Dow Street, was among 20 graduates at Maumee Valley Hospital School of Nursing Toledo on Wednesday May 7. Exercises were at Macomber Vocational School. From Carey, the Strahm family and guests attended, including Harold and Norma Jean, Arline Marshall, Robert Strahm, and Neil Patterson with Lois and Donna.
A regular American Legion meeting for Earl Green Post 344 occurred Tuesday May 6 with Leo Styer district commander of the 5th district as guest speaker on membership and activities. The post bowling team played in the Columbus Legion bowling tournament May 3 and 4. A fish fry is planned at the Legion home Friday evening May 16.
Last week Mervin Shafer purchased land just east of the Dutch Mill filling station from Mr and Mrs Virgil Worst. The parcel has a 154 foot frontage on East Findlay Street and extends 80 feet north. The Worst family retains the house and land they occupy. Arthur Stoll acted as the real estate salesman.
Through the courtesy of Leo T. Jones a gratis midnight show was given at the New Carey Theatre for the Junior and Senior classes of Carey high school after the annual prom.
Pvt Dallas C Bland, son of Mr and Mrs Forest L Bland of Carey Ohio, serves with the 21st Infantry Regiment of the 24th Division in Japan. The Victory Division occupies Kyushu with spring and summer athletic programs and new facilities. Bland, a Carey High School graduate, enlisted September 26 1946 at Columbus Ohio and trained at Aberdeen Proving Ground before overseas duty. He belongs to the Hi Y Club of Carey.
The Ir vin Black family escaped from a fire of unknown origin that struck their Frederick street home about 5 am Monday. The blaze started in the kitchen trapping them on the second floor and forcing an upstairs window escape. The lower level and ground floor furniture were a total loss, covered partially by insurance. Martha Black was visiting elsewhere at the time.
Mr and Mrs Melford Heck and their son Raymond will move today to a newly purchased home on Worello Street in Euclid near Cleveland. Mr Heck becomes office manager of Newman and Stern sporting goods in Cleveland and has been in the city since February. The residence is owned by Mrs E F Thome and was rented to Mr and Mrs Leland Strahm.
Lutheran Sunday school will meet Monday evening May 19 at 8 o clock in the home of Mrs. Richard Frederick on West Findlay street. Hostesses include Mrs H K Van Buren Mrs Lowell Treece and Miss Florence McKee.
The daughter born April 27 to Mr. and Mrs. John Greer north of Carey was christened Judith Rose at Our Lady of Consolation Church with Rev Martin Collet officiating. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Myers.
The Forum class of the Methodist Sunday school will meet Thursday evening at eight o clock in the home of Mrs Kenneth Myers on EB South Street. Assisting hosts will be Miss Elizabeth Iden and Mrs Kenneth Kitzler.
Charles Koons of Carey high school again earned the top score in Ohio on the second Every pupil test in April with a grade of 95 out of 100. Luther Eacon ranked second in the district. Four Carey pupils won high honors in annual scholarship tests. George Hartman Jr. placed third in World History, Horace Newhard fourth in Physics, Calvin Thome eighth in Physics, and Samuel Mee Chesney III tenth in Latin IT. G. A. Hartman, Superintendent.
The state highway department plans resurfacing in Tiffin on Sandusky Street from the New York Central rail line to Washington Street and on Washington Street from Six's Corners to E Market Street. Division Engineer Wilford B. Robinson told city officials in Toledo that work will begin once state funds are provided. Mayor Allan B. Kernan and city officials met with the engineer to discuss the project.
A May 12 blaze in Upper Sandusky gutted the Jevas building on Main Street and three business rooms. Firefighters battled the three hour plus fire, described as the worst in 25 years, with estimated losses over 20000. The fire reportedly started from rubbish behind the Farm Bureau implement store. Additional gutted premises included Jevas shop repair and the Solacoff lunch room. The Jevas brothers of Marion owned the block and commuted daily.
Eugene Rayle a Findlay college graduate is rehired as superintendent of Lykens centralized high school for two years. He formerly coached at Rawson and Columbus Grove. The Rayle family resides on Sycamore. Mrs Rayle former Irma Altvater is daughter of Mr and Mrs R C Altvater of E Findlay street Carey.
Crawford chapter No. 168 O. E. S. invites members to a regular meeting Friday evening May 16 at 8 o'clock. A traveling basket will be sold at auction after the meeting. Members should bring an item for the basket.
Last Sunday Clifford Myers Gary Miller and Roger Orians received their first communion at St Joseph's Church in Salem 4 township Rev Mark Mindrup OFMConv officiated.
