The council discussed state required plans for a new waste water treatment facility and approved advancing Roger Mullolland to Fireman after reaching his probationary month. An online bid process will run and a project to extend Grove Street to the treatment plant was outlined.
A small trash fire behind the Amerace plant was controlled at 6 55 p m May 5. A tool shed fire on James Troiano property East Findlay Street was extinguished at 9 45 a m May 6. Grass fire near railroad tracks by Glenn Avenue and US 23 reported 3 10 p m May 6. Auto fire response noted at 11 45 p m May 11. Shrine Cafeteria unlawfully entered at 8 40 a m May 8 with 613 64 stolen, mostly change. no force used. Police investigating. Mayor Peiffer reappointed W I Swartz to Carey Police Department. Clean Up Week planned with free pickups. cemetery fence plans discussed. Thanks extended to Ernest Mitch for tree donations at Memorial Park.
The Big Ten Bowling League held its annual meeting and banquet at Bowl-Era Lanes on May 5 1969. Commander George Henry Bish gave the keynote and received a team manager trophy from Gibsons. Awards were given to Gibsons as Team Champions Scheck's Shop-Rite for High Team Game and High Team Series Naomiya See Individual Series Georgiaity for High Individual Game and Carol Cole for Most Improved Average. Officers elected for 1969 70 include President Pat Mewhorter Vice President Minnie Garn Secretary Lana Mullholand Treasurer Georgia Smiley Sgt at Arms Betty Rymer.
The 10th Annual Fishing Derby sponsored by the Carey Sportsman Association was postponed due to weather and now set to take place May 18. Prize rules, registration, and safety guidelines apply, with events for children and adults and lunch served Derby Day.
A 1968 Honda motorcycle owned by Ronald Hall of Columbus sustained 100 dollars in damages after a slip on E Findlay Street C and O Railroad tracks at 4 50 pm Mauld. Young Tom Salaz riding a bicycle near Twinings Bar was struck by Adis Risner Route reportedly unavoidable and the boy unhurt. A 1964 Oldsmobile driven by Joe Garn of Carey incurred 300 dollars in damages in a car train crash at N Patterson Street NYC Railroad tracks about 10 30 p.m. May 9 with railroad backing cars and no warning flashers.
Mothers and daughters at Our Lady of Consolation Shrine gathered for an eight o'clock Mass led by Father Hubert followed by breakfast in the New Shrine Cafeteria served by the Knights of Columbus. About 415 attendees enjoyed entertainment by students from the school.
R A Pollitte sales and personnel manager for the E D Neikirk Company announces the store opening date. The exact date is not specified in the readable text but marks the forthcoming retail debut.
Mrs Nora Heck of S Patterson Street celebrated her 90th birthday with relatives from Carey Arcadia Oak Harbor and more attending. The event coincided with Mothers Day and Mrs Heck received a bouquet from the Philathea Sunday School Class at Memorial United Methodist Church.
Council 205 of Fostoria hosted Carey Council 132 members for a social evening in Carey. A potluck, mass note for Miss Catherine Brooks, prize drawings, and plans for Carey’s 50 year celebration were reported. Budgeted committee names and June draw were announced. For sale: Schwinn bicycles listed at 188 W. Brown Ave.
Richard McKinnon David Lessig and Karl Fox led the wool judging division at the Ohio Vocational Agriculture State Contest held at Ohio State University on May 10. David Lessig was the state’s second highest individual. The winning team earns a trip to the National FFA Convention in Kansas City next October. A total of 2,500 students from 239 high schools with 607 teams competed in events including daily judging horticulture. Carey High School coach Hendricks helped the team, which finished with a 134 point score. Lessig scored 46 for second place individually. Also listed were teams completing contests in meat land and genetic stock. Notice: Dr. E. C. Winbigler will be in his office May 21 instead of May 20.
