Carey High School set for 1935 graduation events

Graduation exercises for the class of 1935 will begin Sunday evening May 26 with the baccalaureate at the Methodist church sung and preached by Rev N W Sager. Commencement is Tuesday May 28 at the high school auditorium with Dean Clyde Hissong delivering the address and diplomas conferred by Dr W N Johnson. Admission is free.

Wheat Information Meeting in Carey Set for Next Week

An information meeting on the wheat situation will be held Wednesday evening at 8:00 in the Carey high school auditorium. A speaker will outline the referendum planned later this month and all interested residents are invited to attend.

Guest Violinist at New North Church in Columbus

Co. W. McKnight of E Findlay street appeared as guest violinist at morning services Sunday at the New North Methodist Episcopal church in Columbus. He played On Wings of Song by Mendelssohn with organ accompaniment by his sister Mrs Mabel Robinson.

Holy Communion ceremony at Our Lady of Consolation school

First graders received their Holy Communion at the 7:30 Mass led by Rev. Paul Vollrath with Deacon Rev Cyprian Terwoord and Sub-deacon Fr Wynand. Angels guided the girls and boys escorts wore names such as Janet Virden James Jacob and Louis Schira. In the afternoon the same group renewed baptismal vows in a brief ceremony.

Local School Places Sixth In Ohio Scholarship Meet

The Carey high school tied for sixth place in the exempted village division of the Ohio scholarship contest held at Bowling Green. Top finishers include Rosemary Kramer 8th in chemistry, Christine Hoff 10th, Bruce Knoblock 7th in general science, Margaret Bachman 4th in algebra, Vincent Brown 4th in plane geometry, Richard Clark 4th in world history, Arlene Perkins 10th in first year Latin, and several others across Latin and English in multiple year levels. The team scored 79 points from 26 pupils, with two contestants per school per subject allowed.

Holy Pilgrimage to Shrine Opens May 18

The Spring Pilgrimage novena to the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation runs May 18 to 26 with large pilgrim groups from St Marys Kirby St Peters Upper Sandusky Frenchtown Alvada New Riegel and Tiffin led by Monsignor Hultgen. A special Big Four train from Sandusky Clyde and Tiffin begins at 7 25 7 45 and 8 10 am respectively to accommodate riders.

Mayor Krebs Saves Child From Drowning

Mayor S H Krebs rescued 3 year old Betty Mundy from Spring Run on South Street last Friday after a boy pushed her into four to five foot deep water. He leaped from his shop across the street and grabbed the child’s clothing just before she vanished into a tunnel. Both were unharmed.

Junior-Senior Banquet Promises Fairyland Elegance

The annual Junior-Senior banquet will be held this evening in the school dining room. Rose and silver decorations set a fairyland scene as guests receive their class flower, the red rose. Fairy wand favors and dancing in the high school auditorium with the Ambassador Orchestra from Fostoria directed by Wade Loa conclude the evening.

Kiwanis Listens to Rev Thomas Reed at Meeting

About 20 Kiwanis members met at the Pilgrim House to hear Rev Thomas O Reed, former Ohio penitentiary chaplain and Columbus workhouse superintendent. He praised prison reforms, noted Franklin County funded the Columbus workhouse in 1934 and returned the funds with a $10,000 profit, and urged strict youth home discipline. Capt Robert Smith of the Big Four police, Rev Smith’s brother, was introduced.

Memorial Will Be Dedicated At Hart Green Post

At Hart Green post American Legion Tuesday meeting plans were made to observe Memorial Day. The Carey district committee discussed a spring and summer schedule including an overnight camporal on June 6 and a Memorial Day gravesite decoration with the American Legion. Tests for rank advancement will be reviewed May 29. The Harding Area Council meets May 21 in Carey as plans for the National Jamboree August 21–30 in Washington, D. C. are updated.

Death of Father Calls Local Teacher Home

Miss LaVonne Garmon, a local schools teacher, was summoned home near Dola Monday evening by the sudden death of her father John Garmon who died of a heart attack shortly after retiring. Mr and Mrs John Sheridan accompanied her to the home and then returned to Carey.
