Fire destroys Giant Tire and Rubber plant in Findlay

A Saturday morning blaze gutted the Giant Tire and Rubber factory on Western Avenue in Findlay, causing about 140000 dollars in losses. The four story brick building with a rubber stock burned rapidly, two nearby homes were destroyed, and 200 workers were affected.

Dr I N Zeis traveled to Toledo on Monday to retrieve Levi Haines from Robinwood Hospital after he underwent cataract surgery on his right eye. His sight had been impaired for some time but he is recovering well and hopes to regain vision soon.

Don Cole returned Monday from Newport News for a seven day furlough with Mr and Mrs B M Cole near Vanlue. He enlisted six months ago and serves in a balloon squadron handling observation balloons and their winch. The winch setup is behind front lines and faces heavy enemy fire.

A lodge of 44 local Knights of Columbus has applied for a charter and rented spaces over Simons' grocery for a hall. The rooms have been repapered and repainted and a lavatory installed.

Saturday afternoon Karl Williams braked on the Findlay Branch when the train started suddenly. He lost his grip, was thrown, and suffered a sprained left wrist and torn ligaments.

Mr and Mrs S Hart received Monday night word of the death of Albert James three months old son of their son Ora of Clearwater Florida. Telegram gave no further particulars.

American Aid Converts French Barracks to Home for War Orphans

In France hundreds of homeless children live in former barracks now stations of care. Babies to ten year olds, mostly orphans, are housed under modern facilities with kitchens run by American doctors and schools run by trained teachers. Older children are taught trades and basic schooling while enjoying healthy play, supported by American Steel Cross efforts.
