The Donelson Packing Company on Frederick Street was purchased by James Campbell and John Mullholand on February 20. The new owners will continue to operate under the existing company name. Former corporate owner listed as Mrs Pearl Donelson Or.
United States Air Force officer First Lt Allan Thomas was granted a 10 day leave due to his wife’s illness. Mrs Thomas is a patient at Hospital for Women in Boston. He reportedly returned from Boston after the leave and word from Viet Nam noted St Thomas Air Base had been shelled while Thomas was in Japan en route back to the base.
Adam Puckett 72 of Indianapolis Ind died 9 p.m. Wednesday February 26 at Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis of pneumonia. A retired New York Central Railroad engineer he belonged to the Masonic Lodge World War I Veterans and Brotherhood of Railroad Locomotive Engineers. Born April 5 1896 in Kentucky he was the son of Andrew and Rebecca Craft Puckett never married and is survived by brothers John Adrian and Caleb with two sisters and three brothers deceased. Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Bristoll Funeral Home Carey with Rev Carlos Dyer and burial Spring Grove Cemetery. Army Private Joseph D Myers 20 son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Myers 654 E Findlay St assigned as artilleryman with the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea January 31 before Korea station at Fort Lewis WA a 1966 Carey High School graduate employed by The Carey Times and Porcelain Products.
The Carey Seniors stage Carousel by Rodgers and Hammerstein with Mrs Jerry Blackburn and Mrs Ernest B Leathers directing. Shows set for March 20 and 21 at 8 pm feature a New England coast amusement park opening, waterfront action, dancing and singing, a clambake graduation romance and carnival scenes. Curtain time is 8 pm. Production rights are secured through Howard E Reinheimer of New York.
The Carey Community Development Corp meets to rally broad community backing for its program. Leaders call for involvement from business people, school officials, and organization heads to address apathy and attract new industry. The group reviews Amerace plant availability and names a site committee to study nearby industrial locations. The next meeting is March 28 at 8 pm in the city council chambers.
Sergeant Michael Hackworth, son of James T Hackworth of Carey, received the Bronze Star Medal with V device for valor on November 28, 1968 in Vietnam. While serving with Company D, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, he ran through enemy fire to aid a wounded comrade during a reconnaissance mission in Kien Hoa Province. Hackworth, a 1966 Vanlue High School graduate, has been promoted to sergeant.
Machinist Mate First Class Robert J Duffield USN son of William A Duffield and Ann C Shivers of Carey Ohio and Prineville Oregon won the Honorman title in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration School at Naval Training Center San Diego. He completed the eight week course with an overall average of 97.89 and enlisted in July 1964 after graduating Carey High School.
Our Lady of Consolation School hosts the Mt. Idy Coin and Hobby Club Show on Sunday March 9. Admission is free and displays include American Canadian and foreign coins. Stamps supplies and other items will be available. Co chairmen are Oren Allen and Bill Geckle. Exhibit chairman Jack Opper Brouse chairman Wayne Morris and Rita Allen oversee refreshments.
Carey Knights of Pythias Justus Lodge 393 will hold an open dinner meeting at Castle Hall on Tuesday March 11. Members should bring a prospective member. Dinner at 6 30 includes pork chops sauer kraut mashed potatoes rolls pie and coffee. Committeemen are R F P Wright Clarence Prescott and Wallace Dible.
Porcelain Products Company a Clarken division marks its 75th anniversary with a new 35000 square foot warehouse and operations facility. The firm, a leader in electrical porcelain since 1894, serves electrical wholesalers and utilities with insulators hardware and supplies. The expansion doubles inventory space and supports progressive manufacturing flow across docks and rail access. Beyond Carey warehouse the company maintains inventories in Alaska Georgia Florida Texas California and Washington with Clarken Company as parent.
The American Red Cross announces a fund drive from March 9 to March 23 in Carey area and Ridge and Crawford Townships. Campaign workers will have positive identification and are local residents.
Ralph E Beasley 48 and Jerald L Beasley 33 both of Carey are held in Hancock County jail on charges of shooting with intent to kill James Gibson 33. Judge James A Bope set bonds at 10000 each until a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon March 4. Gibson is in fair condition in ICU after receiving two bullet wounds.
