When to Cut Alfalfa Says Ohio Station Experts

Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station specialists advise cutting alfalfa when new shoots at the crown reach one to two inches. The ten percent bloom rule may fail as base shoots can grow large before bloom and be injured at harvest. Prompt cutting aids a second crop and quality declines if left too long. Leave about two inches of stubble to protect young shoots.
