Wyandot County Soil Conservation Hearing Set

A soil conservation district hearing for Wyandot County will be held Friday June 18 at 10 a.m. at the U S Soil Conservation farm nine miles northeast of Coshocton on State Route 621 in the research building. L Le Rum mell dean of the college of agriculture and chairman of the state conservation committee will preside. About 400 landowners signed 48 petitions in favor of forming a district. opponents will present reasons during the session. Attendees may contact the extension office in Upper Sandusky or a sponsoring committee member by June 12. The project focuses on keeping soil on farms, with no ties to dams or other districts. Sponsoring committee members include George DeBolt Lewis Gottfried Jr Luther Stijl Fred Scheck Jr Ned Kotterman Ross Winter Henry Brown Carey and E V Bell Raymond Passet.

Enumeration of youth ages under Carey exempted village schools

C G Laird reports 1020 youths aged 5 to 18 under the Carey exempted village board of education. Of these 796 are in the district with 51 five-year-olds and 75 six-year-olds. There are 425 boys and 371 girls, plus six boys and three girls listed as handicapped. Eighty-eight 16 year olds and 75 seventeen year olds are boys and girls respectively. Twenty youths are out of school with working certificates and 79 will start first grade next fall at Col Crawford West and Our Lady of Consolation.

New York Central Agent Enters Hospital for Eye Operation

L. E. Offenbacher, agent for the New York Central at Van Lue, is hospitalized at Mary Rutan in Bellefontaine for a major eye operation scheduled Wednesday. Dr. W. E. Mills will perform the surgery with Mrs. Offenbacher accompanying him. He is expected to stay two weeks and then reside briefly with son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Charles DeLong before returning home.

Ohio World War II Compensation Applications Rise Across Counties

More than 425000 veterans filed for the World War II compensation in 11 days. By March 13 a total of 426426 bonus applications were received with 321624 army and 104802 navy claims. Wyandot county reported 720 army and 248 navy applications. Seneca 12214 army and 946 navy. Hancock 1876 army and 733 navy.

Horace Newhard Wins Trip to Miami Florida

Horace Newhard won first place for the boys in Wyandot county in the Quiz Book examination. The Carey Exemuated Village School earned the county test spot in Upper Sandusky with Horace receiving a fully paid trip to Miami Florida for the top honor. Jane Haford finished second for the girls in the county examination.

Lanning Views New Ford in Detroit

C. W. Lanning, local Ford dealer, visited Detroit on Monday May 24 to view the new 1949 Ford on display at Olympic Stadium. More than 1500 dealers attended. He says the new model looks markedly different with a lower wider body and will reach show rooms June 18.

Mrs Helen Thomas attended May 23 and 24 Cleveland commencement exercises for St Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. Valeria Thomas, in the class of 68, completed coursework in February and remains on hospital staff while planning to continue there. She is a Carey high school graduate. Rev Francis P Sayre Jr gave the graduation address at the hospital and the baccalaureate service was held at Garfield Memorial Methodist Church with Rev John Hess delivering the sermon.

Doctor Ford Moves to Columbus Church

Dr. O. E. Ford, longtime pastor of the First Methodist Church in Carey, is transferred to Columbus to lead the Cleveland Ave. Methodist Church.
