Carey High Band Urges Large Attendance for Rehearsals

Attending Lutheran Summer School From Carey Church

The Rev Wade H Koons and 35 Christ Lutheran Church members depart Sunday for Lakeside to join the 22nd annual summer school of the Synod of Ohio United Lutheran Church in America. The group includes 23 Luther League members. leaders from Concordia College and Philadelphia will lecture. The school runs July 17 to 23.

Promoted to Corporal at 7th AAF Base in the Marshall area

Rene J. Dubois 24 son of Mrs. Gertrude Dubois Carey Ohio promoted to corporal at an advanced base of the 7th AAF as an airplane mechanic servicing bomber aircraft in constant action with the Japs. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific service ribbon with two bronze stars for battles in the theater since arriving in November. A Carey high school graduate he was employed by Porcelain Products Inc. in Carey.

Artistic Beauty Shop Opens After Purchase

Mrs. Harry Shull of Fostoria former Carey resident purchased the Artistic Beauty Shop from the estate of the late Mrs. Rollo Kimmel and opened for business on Monday July 17. Her husband Sgt Warry Shull is in the U S Army stationed in New Guinea.

Fire reported at Green's restaurant area on Findlay street

Carey firefighters were summoned at 1 15 am Monday to combat a blaze in an apartment above Green's restaurant on E Findlay street. A Davenport, curtains, shades and window sills burned. Fire believed started from a lighted cigarette dropped on a Davenport.

A son named Gerald Lee Kemerley was born Monday, July 105 to Mr and Mrs Karl Kemerley of the Carey area, adding a new member to the family.

Brothers Meet In Italy Three Frederick Brothers

Sgt Robert Frederick and Pvt Frank Frederick and Pvt Judson Frederick, sons of Mrs Leora Frederick of East Findlay Street, met in an Italian hospital where Judson is recovering from shrapnel wounds. Robert and Frank visited on July 6, noting it is the first reunion in two years and eight months. The letter from Judson, written July 7, arrived by air mail July 13, and reports Judson’s steady improvement and a hearty breakfast.

Mitten Brothers Reunite in England After Long Separation

Howard T. Mitten and Raymond G. Mitten, both in the armed services, met in England after months apart. The reunion came with help from the Red Cross and was the first since their father Gilbert Mitten died last September. Two other Mitten brothers are listed in service: Clarence V. Mitten in the Pacific and Lhelmar A. Mitten recently completing Great Lakes boat training.

Brothers Nye Meet in Italian Hospital

Leonard and Robert Nye, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Nye of Carey, report in a June 1944 letter from Italy that Leonard, a U S Navy sailor, and Pvt. Robert Nye met at a hospital where Leonard is recovering. The brothers shared news and good wishes for home as they await further duties.

Return From Boy Scout Camp Eight

Eight boys of Boy Scout Troop No. 13 return to Carey after a week at Camp Owens south of Marion. Attendees include Stanley Van Buren Jimmie Robinson Eugene Rethgeb Palacerene Roy Platt Jack and Gene Chaps and Eugene Eingle. They worked on advancement handicraft and earned rewards while some minor injuries occurred. The cabin won neatness and cleanliness inspections three times, a first for the troop.

Miss Clarice Hile daughter of Mr and Mrs Claude Hile of the Carey Findlay road returned from a one month trip visiting relatives in the South. She first stopped in Nashville Tennessee to see the Grand Old Opry then toured Atlanta Georgia including the Cyclorama building with the Battle of Atlanta painting 50 feet high 400 feet around weighing 18 090 pounds painted 1885 1886 scenes made famous by Gone With the Wind The engine Texas is housed there Later she visited relatives in Central Liberty Easley and Chester South Carolina Her cousin Harold Phillips formerly at Buckeye Traction Ditcher plant Findlay was on leave from Corpus Christi Texas.

Wounded Niederkohr in England Hospital Recovering From Wounds

Mrs. Leonard J Niederkohr of Upper Sandusky reports that her husband Pfc Niederkohr is confined to a hospital in England after being wounded in France on June 30. He suffered injuries to the left foot leg and arm, was flown to England, and is improving after about 25 days in continuous combat with Co G 116th Inf 29th Division. He earned the expert infantry combat badge just before the battle. He is the son of Mr and Mrs William Niederkohr of route 1 Carey and has brothers and a brother in law serving abroad and at sea in the armed forces.

Prof S R Beitler of Columbus spent Wednesday with his aunt Miss Mattie Myers. Word reached Mr and Mrs W H Huston that their son SiSgt Rex Huston left Italy on July 10 to return to the United States after completing 61 missions as a wing bombardier on a B 25 Mitchell bomber. Morris Wonder has enlisted in the U S Army at the Fremont recruiting station and will report for duty at Toledo today. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Ervin Wonder formerly of Carey, now seven miles east of Tiffin, and graduated from Carey High School with the class of 1944.

Fire destroys storage barn in Carey after blaze

A late Monday afternoon fire destroyed a storage barn on North Patterson Street in Carey along with damage to a nearby residence. The blaze also scorched the grain elevator and damaged neighboring homes, with estimates around 20 000 bushels of wheat affected and losses pegged at about 20 000 dollars. Fire agencies from Upper Sandusky and Findlay helped control the fire which investigators linked to possible bee nest burning or a car short circuit.
