Mrs. Minnie Pahl of Carey Ohio receives a Navy letter from Secretary James Forrestal confirming that Gerald Franklin Pahl Water Tender third class U S N R age 22 was officially declared dead following the D Day action off Normandy His ship the U S S Corry struck a mine and survivors were taken from the sea The Navy presumes death on 7 June 1945 after a long period in missing status Gerald was born in Carey July 15 1922 and is survived by his mother a brother and three sisters The Corry went down July 6 1944 with 150 of 300 crew lost}

81 Years Young Man Celebrates Long Life Of L M Remlinger

L M Remlinger of Toledo street marks his 81st winter with family noting youthful appearance. A farmer in youth, he has worked 32 years for National Lime & Stone Co including two years driving a team and 28 years in extra plant work. He and his wife will celebrate 55 years of marriage this September alongside six children, eleven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

Luther League Members Prepare for Lakeside Summer School

Thirty members of the Luther League of Christ Lutheran Church will travel to Lakeside for the annual Synod of Ohio United Lutheran summer school. The event, held July 16 to 22, draws nearly 800 attendees with leaders from across the United States and Canada teaching various church work groups. The local church will send 12 adults as well, and Rev. Wade H. Koons will attend and return for Sunday services on July 22.

Mrs Williams and family visit relatives in Virginia and Pennsylvania

Mrs John Williams and children Barbara and Richard returned home Tuesday after a two week visit with Mr and Mrs B C Bowling and children in Alexandria Virginia. Mrs Williams also visited her son Robert D Williams in Harrisburg Pennsylvania with her brother in law Sgt John Twining. Twining recently returned from Italy where he served in the 2nd air force and is now assigned to Bedford Massachusetts. The party traveled via Miami Beach Florida en route.

Naval officer to enter naval hospital for Normandy injuries

Urban Kokenge and daughter Miss Marilyn of Miami and Lt and Mrs Urban Kokenge of Bethesda visited Mrs Lee Ogg in Findlay Street. They spent a week with Kokenge's mother in Avilla and with Edward Kokenge in Auburn before returning to Carey. On Monday they left for Bethesda where Lt Kokenge will re enter a naval hospital for treatment of D-Day injuries. Urban Kokenge and daughter will then return to Miami from Bethesda.

Seaman 1/e Ralph F. McKee of Carey Ohio serves aboard an escort aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He has seen action at Palau, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His wife Kay Rita and Mack II, plus parents, and two brothers in the service, survive. He previously worked for National Lime & Stone Co.

In The Carey Times June 7 Virgil Kear a Seabee arrived on Attu Island. S/Sgt Herman Emerine and Pfc Chester England read the item and located him within hours. Emerine has served 27 months and England 28 months. both families are linked to Carey Nevada and Souk.

Purple Heart recipients tied by family and faith

In Genoa and Tiffin two Kauffmans, Father J H Kauffman and his nephew Sgt Joseph Kauffman, both veterans, are Purple Heart recipients. Father Kauffman earned his for wounds in the Argonne on October 23, 1918 and heads Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine. His nephew, wounded in the Pacific, is stationed at Okinawa.

Byron Newell Struck by Lightning in Pennsylvania Farm

Byron Newell, formerly of the David Ogg farm near Carey, was struck by lightning while operating a mowing machine at his Belle Vernon home. He awoke after the accident lying atop his small daughter. the daughter was uninjured. One horse died. Mrs. Newell was in the hay mow and helped summon aid. A physician ordered him to rest for several days.

Carey Names New School Superintendent Hartman Arrives

Carey public schools welcomed G. A. Hartman newly appointed superintendent who arrived last week to assume duties. He will stay with Mrs. Sarah until a rental home is available for his wife and children. Hartman previously led Amster dan schools, succeeding Earl B. Driver who resigned to join Washington township centralized schools in Lucas County.

Two Boys Injured In Scooter Car Crash Near Carey

Clair Shane 11 and Gene Stillberger 16 were in a Sunday crash at the Hunter road and county road 96 intersection two miles south of Carey. Clair was seriously hurt with a broken collarbone and other injuries. Gene had severe bruises. Both were taken to Findlay hospital. The driver, Arthur Welly of Alvada, said he was traveling about 30 mph. Clair's condition improved by Wednesday. Miss Carat Jay Shane, a Waves member in San Francisco, planned to fly home at 4 pm Wednesday.

Private Lewis W Walter joins 32nd Infantry Division in Northern Luzon

Pvt Lewis W Walter of Carey Ohio has arrived in Northern Luzon with the 32nd Division cavalry reconnaissance troops. The unit, known as the Red Arrow, is a veteran Pacific unit arriving in 1942 and serving from New Guinea to the Philippines. Walter entered service December 1944 and went overseas May 1945 after attending Wharton High School.

Clarence Huston Dies After War Wounds Reported

Telegram from Washington confirms Private First Class Clarence L Huston died January 31 in the European theater after being wounded near Sessenheim France. He was 19 and survived by his parents Vernon and Mary Huston and four brothers.

Kiwanis hears Navy chaplain on war’s realities and Pacific life

Carey Kiwanis held a meeting at Trubey's with Chaplain M. Paul Paetznick, Navy assigned to the Marines, discussing war without glamor. He recounted Pacific theater experiences, the cruelty of Japanese forces, retaking the Philippines, Manila devastation, and Oriental diseases including malaria with precautions.
