Death of Mrs J F Martin in Portsmouth and Dayton burial
Mr and Mrs L G Ranger received word of the death of Mrs J F Martin wife of a former Methodist pastor. She died July 4 at 5725 Gallia Ave Portsmouth. Funeral services were held in Portsmouth and burial followed Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery Dayton. Rev Martin served the Carey church from 1920 to 1925 during which the new church was built.

At a Carey Welfare Committee meeting last Monday the secretary presented a year end report of donations purchases and disbursements. Chairwoman Mrs G M Kurtz said funds are exhausted and no purchases are possible, so used clothing will be issued as long as supply lasts under township trustees orders. H L Pahl will continue summer service. Efforts focus on school children to keep attendance steady. the committee does not handle general relief. The year’s distribution includes 108 pairs of shoes 4 overshoes 36 pajama sets 40 pairs of hose and shoe repairs from Carey Community Chest totaling 1135. Red Cross garments add 30 overalls 13 trousers 74 hosiery items 3 dresses 3 shirts 1 sweater 22 underwear 4 blankets 34 new garments 215 used garments 22 used shoes 6 comforts 7 coats 4 layettes for a grand total of 756 articles distributed plus shoe repairs.

A fire largely damaged the Henry Orians harness shop on St Vance street early Monday and the John Orians barber shop above it. Night officer Earl Briggs found the blaze, believed caused by defective wiring between partitions above an arched door.
