The Salem Festival features COUNTRY CHICKEN lunches from 5 30 PM with fresh pies and cakes. Amusements booths and games provide family friendly entertainment with a musical backdrop. If weather turns, the event moves to Monday July 14.
The Monument Builders of America plan to erect an international peace monument on Belle Isle near Detroit from August 15 to November 11 with dedication on Armistice Day. A $250 prize will be awarded for the winning design, plus $50 prizes for inscriptions from Canada and the United States. Entries are due by August 1. Descriptive folders available at Keller Memorial Studio, the public library, or The Carey Times.
At the regular meeting the Carey board of education approved the annual budget for 1942. Miss Betty Willard, instructor in vocational home economics, resigned effective August 31 1941 to pursue other work. Board members present were Russell Gottfried, Dale Frazier, Dr H K Van Buren, Dr L E Treece, and Truman Romig.
An auditor reports six month freight data shows outgoing freight up 481 percent and incoming freight up 219 percent, signaling prosperity for Carey as trade activity climbs at the local New York Central office.
The village council hires Ada m Worst as scavenger to remove garbage from premises each week at 15 cents per week. Public warned that burning garbage on property is unlawful. Clerk Jacob Nitraver signs the notice.
The Ladies' Aid of Beech Grove United Brethren will meet at Mrs Ernest Shane's home for an all day gathering. An election of officers will be held during the session.
A reader letter from Pemberville Leader notes that loud music boxes were installed, disrupting the quiet ambiance of the restaurant and drawing attention away from dining. The piece laments the change and urges reconsideration.
Attorney F. K. Cassel informs that he will be absent from his office from July 14 through July 19 1941 inclusive. The notice lists 27 28 as identifiers or docket references.
A tentative list for call No. 23 in Wyandot county shows 17 men selected, with three more to be inducted Friday. Read across the list names include Frederick Crist Jacob Smiley Eldon Dame and Alton Kinsinger of Carey along with several others from Upper Sandusky and nearby towns.
Wyandot county draft board urges all class 14 men with dependents to contact the board. Names Edwin John Davidson Harold Oscar Ulrich Dale Robert Suter Edwin Lester Ritterspach John Berton Kear and alternates John Pearl Holdecraft and Richard Meyer Backensto are listed. Friday call includes Thomas Richard Leonard Kenneth Wayne Ekleberry George William Richardson. No alternates on this call. Total selectees now 156 with 21 rejected at Fort Hayes and three previously accepted given physical discharges.

Pvt. Max Silverstein, stationed at Camp Roberts California, phoned his parents Sunday afternoon to say he is well and enjoying his new duties. He compliments the army life, reports excellent food and fine surroundings.
The watchman service at the Findlay street crossing of the C and O railroad is 24 hours instead of 12. We had stated this fact in earlier issues of The Carey Times, so hope no one was misled by the misstatement made in 11rst Week's paper.
The Carey Townsend club meets at the public library Monday at 8 00 p m. Jacob Nitrauer, president, announces a delegate from the 6th national convention at Buffalo will present a complete report held June 30 to July 4.
John Risner notes new barber shop prices effective Friday July 11. Haircuts cost 40 cents while shaves are 20 cents. Closing hours remain the same as nearby barber shops in Carey.
Wyandot County lists 118 men aged 21 who registered for military service on last Tuesday. Col. Goble predicts induction by late next month with first enlistees heading to training in August, pending Selective Service plans.
The Jennie Larmonth Missionary Society of Christ Lutheran Church will meet with Mrs Ruby Criger on Monday evening. Mrs Walter Gottfried will assist as hostess, with Mrs Ross Johnson and Mrs J E Ziebarth serving as lesson leaders. Members of the Woman's Missionary Society are invited to attend.
The choir of Christ Lutheran Church will lead the morning service next Sunday at 10 30 o clock.
Jacob Nitrauer offers hunting and fishing licenses at the town hall. Licenses are available for residents and non residents with recipient options explained in person. Visit during town hall hours to complete the purchase and receive your permit.
Lieut Comdr Maurice M Bradley of the U S S Decatur and five other military men from Bowman Field Fort Benjamin Harrison Camp Lee Quantico Pine Camp were honored Sunday at Christ Lutheran church. H E Snyder led the opening service Supt Earl B Driver spoke on USO work T D Romig described National Lutheran Council efforts and D J Frazier dedicated a chart listing the six Christchurch members in service. Patriotic music by the organist and choir.
The Carey Knights of Columbus softball squad travels to Tiffin Friday night to compete in the Northwest Ohio Council sectional tournament. The winner and runner up advance to the state tourney at Cedar Point July 25 26 27. Last year Carey lost in the state event to the Cleveland council. A rained out game and a Sunday double header ended with Tiffin Knights of Columbus 4 Carey All Stars 2 and Toledo Post Office 4 Carey Knights 1.
C R Lonsway of Carey council is named district deputy for the Upper Sandusky Tiffin and Carey councils. State Deputy James Lavey announced the appointment as he outlined the year’s districts. The group planned an Aug 3 picnic at the fairgrounds and a joint Aug 5 installation of Carey and Tiffin officers in Tiffin with Lonsway leading and Lavey assisting.

The Silverstein Iron & Metal Co is remodelling the hay barn on N Patterson street, recently purchased from the John Hendricks estate. The project tears out wood flooring for crushed stone and covers the exterior with corrugated iron. The building will store used cars and trucks.
Ed Riester Sr sells a half room house on May Street to Monroe Crist. The Kinleys occupy the property but Crist plans to move in soon. Sale handled by John Risner, a local real estate dealer.
Wyandot County Treasurer Charles B Martin announces the tax books are open for the June collection of real estate taxes and will close on September 10, 1941.

On Wednesday evening July 16 the Carey Methodist Sunday school hosts its 5th annual lawn fete with various committees handling purchases menus advertising programs and serving duties. The Carey Schools band will perform and Patterson street is approved for festival use.
A Marion social security field office representative will hold 12 to 1 p m office hours at Carey municipal building to help married women update account number cards. Ray V. Haning announced the Marion office. Cards will bear the married name but retain the original number. changes of name may be recorded and new cards obtained at the Marion office or Carey municipal building.
The weekly band concert directed by William Holloway will be played next Wednesday July 16 on the Patterson street side of the Methodist church lawn during the lawn fete at the church. Local residents are invited to attend the free event.
The Economy Store announces Thursday afternoon closings during July and August. Burson Clothing Co and Fetters' 5¢ to $100 Store join the notice, though details on location or hours are incomplete.
A meeting is planned in the Cary high school auditorium Friday at 8 o clock to organize opposition to the wheat marketing quota. All interested are urged to attend.
Members of the Carey Kiwanis club plan their annual picnic Monday evening at Wasside Park, between Carey and Upper Sandusky. The lunch will be served by the junior Kiwanians.
