School pupils at Carey Public School show declining missing rates after a four day closure due to influenza. On Monday 129 pupils were absent about 17 or 18 percent of enrollment, Tuesday 98 or 13 percent, and Wednesday 85 or 10 percent as cases abated.
The high school community mourns junior Harold Brown killed in a tragic loss. Buses transport students to his funeral while teachers and Superintendent Driver attend. Dr Guy Morse Bingham spoke at assembly and advised seniors on success despite adversity. Basketball games resume this week with matches vs Upper, Arcadia and Gibsonburg.
Two pupils Leo and Leona Williams joined the class from Sycamore schools. The first semester showed encouraging work with many achieving A plus grades. Examinations followed the old plan with pen and ink writing and independent spelling and reading.
William Yingling won first place in the arithmetic speed test followed by Walter Roszman in second and Howard Snowberger in third. Several students including Joan Cole Ardyth Hood Lois Kennerly and Phyllis Snyder have perfect attendance this year.
Eight students named on the honor roll for the last six weeks are William Bayes Barbara Driver Mary Alice Donaldson James Gatchell Chester Holida Stanley Hunter and Gerald.
A Carey council Knights of Columbus district gathering at the parish hall drew over 100 members from Kenton Findlay Sandusky Toledo and other areas. State Secretary James Laney spoke on service to God and country as district deputies and others discussed duties of the six point program and new insurance features.
Carey returned to action with 10 players for two games in Ada. The A squad fell 42 to 23, then 35 to 26 to Upper Sandusky. Tuesday they beat Arcadia 43 to 19 with Jack Michaels and Wayne Zahn scoring 16 each.
A 10 piece band organized by Johnnie Burton of Wharton includes Herman Emerine piano La Moyne Fagan saxophone Rus sell Wickiser drums and others. Burton cousin of Phil Harris orchestra leader on Jack Benny show studies music at Ohio Northern university Ada. Band practices weekends and plans a commercial broadcast over Marion radio station.
Devotions and Confraternity prayers were inaugurated at St. Wendelin's Church Fostoria by Rev. Joseph Hero OMC. Father Joseph will visit St. Nichola Church Miller City on February 2 to inaugurate Shrine prayers to Our Lady with Rev. Francis X Hermilfer assisting.
The golf ambulance on Wednesday took John Moll to the Kollmier convalescent home in Findlay. Moll, aged 86, has been in failing health and recently fell in his room and lay on the floor for hours before help arrived. He will be 87 on Saturday, February 8.
The annual stockholders meeting of Carey Farmers Co operative Co will be held Thursday January 30 in the basement of the First Methodist church. Free dinners will be served by the church ladies at 12:00 noon and the meeting will follow immediately after.
The 1941 Gasco Food Institute Cook's Carnival in Carey drew an overflow crowd at the high school auditorium. Miss Louise McFarland and Miss Martha Ulrich led demonstrations on oven cookery as C. J. Mortley guided entertaining cooking acts.
W J Jefferson head of the city water and light system was hurt by a fall on icy steps at the municipal building. He sustained a broken left kneecap and surgery to wire the bone was performed. He may be brought home later in the week.
The Philathea class of Memorial Evangelical Sunday school meets Tuesday evening with Mrs. Florence Daymon. Mrs. L. L. Rowland will lead the lesson study.
The 1940 Carey fire department report lists alarms and losses by date. Notable incidents include a $10,000 loss at the American Legion building, a $200 loss at Darnall Trucking Co, and a house trailer fire with $200 loss plus a separate $225 house loss and $100 contents. District names include Wyandot County Farm Bureau Carey branch and Isadore McLaughlin.
The Catholic Knights of Ohio announce an installation of officers this Thursday evening at the Knights of Columbus club rooms. New 1941 officers include President Mrs. H. L. Paul, Vice President Andrew Collet, Secretary Frank J. Minnegett, financial secretary John S. Fox, Sentinel Carl Kessler, trustees Charles Kinn, Mrs. R. M. Lonsway and Frank Miller.
The February benefit show, arranged with Leo T Jones, screens February 20 21 and 22 at Carey theatre. A double feature includes The Rams Parts We Watch and Riding on a Rainbow. Proceeds fund the children's hall heating plant.
A 100 pound newborn son arrived Thursday January 23 to Mr and Mrs Haro Yaichner of Bloomville at the home of Mrs Delpha May in Republic. He is named Charles Haro Yaichner. The father is a son of DM and Mr Charles Yaichner of near Adrian.
The Victory class of the Methodist Sunday school will meet with Mrs. Linus Myers of East South Street on Wednesday evening February 5. Mrs. E G Snyder will assist the hostess. Mrs. Ralph Heck will conduct the devotionals.
Mr and Mrs Mark Mitten sold their 80 acre farm four miles northeast of Carey to Walter Phil lips. Mr Mitten will hold a farm sale Monday February 17.
NORTH BALTIMORE Jan 26 Announcement was made that during the influenza and pneumonia epidemic the American Legion airhalator crew stands ready to call for emergency use of the machine wherever needed in the county. In test cages the crew has reached its destination within 15 to 17 minutes after a call. The machine was purchased through donations of various Legion organizations in Wood county and is kept at Bowling Green in constant readiness for use whenever needed.
North Salem Lutheran church about six miles southeast of Carey Wyandot county burned Wednesday morning leaving only four brick walls. The fire destroyed all church contents and residents recalled smoke the day before. Pastor Rev J I Seim of Upper Sandusky leads the congregation which marked its 90th anniversary the prior Sunday.
The opening of Blue's restaurant and confectionery announced for Friday January 31 has been postponed. It is tentatively planned for Friday February 7 but delays in receiving and installing equipment may push the date further. if the equipment arrives in time the Feb 7 opening will proceed, otherwise another postponement is likely.
Corrections note two errors in a Carey school district board item. R L Gottfried did not get re elected but succeeded Dr H K Van Buren as president. Dr Frazier was elected vice president. Other board members are Dr Van Buren Dr Lowell Treeece and T D Romig.
Mrs Harvey Wonder expresses sincere thanks to friends the Dorcas Bible class of the Methodist Sunday School and the P R S club for flowers cards and greetings of cheer while she was ill in Findlay hospital.
Recently elected officers will be installed at a W B A meeting Friday evening January 31. Mrs Dennis De Vene will be installing officer. All officers and members are urged to attend. There will be a potluck.
The Garey fire department has cancelled the production titled The Movie Queen planned for February 13 and 14.
Committees outlined this year's Community Institute with six sessions in progress. Exhibits will carry generous prizes similar to county fair awards. Program chairmen will meet at the library Saturday to select entertaining and instructional items. Schoolchildren are invited to make posters and prizes will be awarded for quality work.
The Carey board of education thanks ministers theater manager cooking school and gas company for their cooperation during a four day school closure. Patrons and pupils also expressed agreement to keep the closure to a minimum.
The annual report released by Marshal Ed Weaver records 76 total arrests by the Carey police in 1940 across categories including burglary 3, larceny 19, auto theft 3, drunkenness 5, disorderly conduct 8, driving intoxicated 2, traffic violations 10, parking 27, suspicion 12, molesting 1, with five runaways returned home and over $300 in stolen property recovered.
Mr and Mrs Russell Wickiser were in Columbus Monday and Tuesday for the annual stockholders and agents meeting of Motorists Mutual Insurance. Sessions took place at the Deshler Wallick hotel with a showing of Yellowstone Park and Old Mexico images and Vic Donahey delivering the principal address as company president.
The Carey Farmers and Sportsmen Protective Association released 120 rabbits from Kansas. The rabbits were sent to Carl Heck Leo Fisher Merril Ritter J A Haines Walter Klein John Brown Clifford Coffman and Golden Tofig for distribution on their farms. The next club meeting is set for Thursday evening February 20 at the old town hall.
Rebecca Jean Lear daughter of Mr and Mrs George Lear will give a song number and acrobatic dance at the Harris theatre Findlay Friday evening. The program is sponsored by Ray's dance studio in Findlay.
