Public School News Faces Flu Disruption and Pause

Reporter Eleanor McChesney notes opening as usual on Monday but attendance down by 28 percent due to flu. School closing for the rest of the week was announced, delaying a student council program planned for Wednesday.

Grace Firestine Returns to West Building Third Grade

Miss Grace Firestine, third grade teacher at the West building, resumes duties Monday morning after an extended illness. Religious education class divisions postponed until next week for better group estimates. Pastors from four local churches to teach their groups each Wednesday morning, earning one fourth credit for the work in the next semester.

The basketball schedule was disrupted by an epidemic with last week’s games postponed and the same fate awaiting this week’s contests.

Skylark Club Visits Jeanette MacDonald Concert in Columbus

The Skylark chapter of the Jeanette MacDonald club with Miss Helen Smith as counsellor traveled to Columbus en masse to attend a Memorial Hall concert sponsored by the Columbus Women's Music Club. Funds were raised by cookie sales and tickets for Bitter Sweet to cover costs.

Carey Theatre Stops Paid Ads After January 16

Leo T. Jones of the Carey Theatre announces no more paid commercial advertising on the screen effective January 16. Contracts held by semi owner forced a rally fund on the screen, but those expired January 16 and no new contracts will be granted to any advertising company or individuals for the Carey Theatre screen.

Carey Semen to Stage Show at Local High School

The Carey fire department plans a combined 3 act drama and moving picture show titled The Movie Queen to be shown February 13 and 14 at the high school auditorium. Miss Mildred Lamson of the Amateur Theatre Guild of New York will direct the play and film local scenes.

Carey Plans $25,000 Street Resurfacing and Safety Purchases

Lima state highway rep meets with Mayor Bachar and village council to discuss widening and resurfacing N Vance Street from North Street to Courtad Road and the Findlay to North Street segment. Estimated cost is 25 000 with Carey paying 20 percent. Council approves. They also vote to buy smoke masks rubber boots and coats for the fire department and grade Beckwith subdivision streets to stake three new houses. A stop light for Findlay and Patterson is tabled as state traffic light standards loom.

Gilliland Body Returned to St Louis for Burial

Undertaker and Harry Bristoll left Tuesday for St Louis to receive the body of A G Gilliland who died December 23 in that city. The body was placed in a vault awaiting instructions from relatives and will remain at Bristoll funeral home until services, likely Saturday afternoon. Gilliland was brother to Mrs F S Beebe and to Miss Sue, Miss Della, and J H Gilliland of Carey.

Announcer Announces Eliza Jane Bachar Marriage

Albert Bachar of Carey area announces the marriage of his daughter Eliza Jane Bachar to Faul Messenger of Marion. The ceremony occurred November 2, 1940, at the home of Rev. Cyrus Wright in Greenup Kentucky. Mrs Messenger, Carey High School 1934 graduate, works at Hile Hatchery office west of Carey.

Gottfried Re elected Carey School Board President

At a Carey school district meeting Tuesday evening R L Gottfried was re elected president and D A Frazier vice president. Plans were completed for the purchase of farm shops and industrial arts equipment, mainly power machinery, during the regular session following reorganization.

Burgette the magician with 15 years’ experience joins the program, featuring Miss Jayne Melby from Marion in a girl revue. Freshman Martha Ann Tracey Admitted for Pneumonia at Mercy

Miss Martha Ann Tracey, a freshman at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, was admitted to Mercy hospital Thursday for pneumonia. Her condition improved by Monday and she returned to her parents two miles north of Carrier, likely to stay three or four weeks.

Blues Restaurant Set for Grand Opening

Floyd Morrison and sons Ronald and David and daughter Sandra Mr and Mrs L J Nachbar Mr and Mrs Clifford Stoll and Charles Nachbar visited Mrs Morrison at Rhinefrank hospital Perrysburg on Sunday. Mrs Morrison who lives 3.5 miles south of Carey is recovering from a goitre operation she underwent last Thursday.
