The third annual Girls Sports Night at the Nutshell School gym on January 30 includes a volleyball match between students and teachers and a girls basketball game to debate a new look from mothers’ school days. A new Goal Ball game debuts, demonstrated by junior and senior girl aides, with admission 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.
Principal A E Wohlers spoke to Carey High School Hi-Y about the place of the Hi-Y in school. He stressed church home and school teamwork to build the spiritual background for the boys. The Hi-Y aims to form the basis for cooperation in Carey.
An invitational basketball tournament starts Saturday January 31 at the Carey Catholic hall with 15 teams and four games nightly on January 31 February 1 7 8 and 15. Notable teams include the Vanlue Lions Carey Burson's and Carey Porcelain Products with Wentling brothers refereeing.
Attorney General Hughs notes a new Ohio statute requires all primaries to be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May each year. Previously primaries occurred in May only for presidential years and in August in other years.
L. G. Love of Findlay, vice president of The National Lime and Stone Co., says Carey plant maintenance crew has made fine progress installing dust collecting equipment. Nearly all pieces from manufacturers are in place and ready to run, but completion hinges on receiving the last outstanding item.
A benefit dance for the Carey Band Mothers club is set for Saturday evening February 7 at 8 o'clock in the school auditorium. The Revel Aires orchestra of Upper Sandusky provides music for round and square dancing and a cake walk with admission 50 cents. Tickets available at Dible's plumbing shop or from club members.
The church council of Christ Lutheran Church elected officers for 1948 in a special meeting last Sunday. Vice president George W Snyder, secretary Perry McDaniel, current fund treasurer Grover C Wagner, benevolence treasurer George A Hartman Sr. Rev Wade H Koons serves as council president.
Upper Sandusky official Karl F Kraus has filed with Wyandot County election board to run for a second term as county treasurer. He announces candidacy and outlines intent to seek reelection in Wyandot County.
Mrs. Martha Hood purchased the lunch room from Mrs. S. R. Luxon and Mrs. Monroe Dotson on Vanco Street.
A new Abraham Lincoln Friendship food train, organized by CROP with honorary chair Carl Sandburg, will assemble in Lincoln on February 12 from Nebraskan contributions. Illinois and other regions will form sections, with Iowa and Wyoming pledging support and cars planned in Chicago and Indianapolis for overseas aid.
Rev Wade H Koons pastor of Christ Lutheran Church chairs the Christian rural overseas program for Lutheran churches of Ohio He will convene the CROP committee for the Ohio church world service committee. The committee will represent all Protestant bodies and cooperate with Lutheran World Relief.
About 10 am Saturday Mrs Nell Twining noticed smoke from the chimney of the Forest Hingle house. The wall around the chimney overheated from a coal stove and caught fire but the fire department quenched it before major damage. The home, occupied by Mrs Elizabeth Thomas and her son Ronald, had been remodeled last summer from a garage for the Hinges.
A 6-pound son arrived Monday January 26 at 10:00 a m at St Vincent's hospital Toledo to Mr and Mrs R B Whiteford of 320 Hawthorne Toledo. The mother is the former Susanne Hoff daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Hoff of E South street Carey. An 8 pound 1 ounce daughter was born January 21 at 5 10 pm at San Antonio hospital Kenton to Mr and Mrs Leo Bernard of W Findlay street. She is named Mary Catherine. A son born January 7 at Christ hospital Cincinnati to Mr and Mrs Dc A Yeoman. They name David Arthur. Mrs Yeoman is the former Elizabeth Houk of W Findlay street.
Charles Wittenberg 82 remains in serious condition at his daughter Mrs Emery Ulrichs home on Frederick street after a fall last Tuesday broke his hip. He has lived with his daughter since December 7 coming from his son Scott Wittenberg near Kenton where he spent three months. His former home was Bellefontaine.
Henry Kimmel clerk Walter Roush and Charles Nachbar trustees and Clarence Brooks maintenance man from Salem township attended the state convention of township trustees and clerks in Columbus last week. Kimmel is president of the Wyandot county association.
The Marion Saints edged the Carey Blue Devils 47 45 after a late rally by Carey fell short. Dennison scored 24 for Carey while Schuler led Marion with 23 as Snowberger anchored Carey defense and Baldauf paced Marion in the final period. A 34 24 earlier win by Marion over Carey is noted.
The American Legion Auxiliary will host a Valentine party for the Legion on Thursday evening February 12 in the Legion hall. A tureen dinner is served at 6 30. All members of both organizations are urged to attend. The program is planned by a committee of Mrs James Lindsay Mrs Paul Krupp Mrs L G Altwater Mrs William Spackey Mrs Francis Mc Carley and Mrs Clifford Holden.
T/Sgt Virgil Orians, stationed at Fort Hayes Columbus, reenlisted in the army. He will serve with an escort detachment of the enlisted Army Reserve to accompany bodies of soldiers returned from overseas. Sgt Orians is a World War II veteran.
Mr and Mrs Ray Gamberling announce the engagement of their daughter Marcella to Ray Sherk of Gibsonburg. The wedding is set for August.
A 5:15 am fire at 1917 Wayne Street at Fearing Boulevard in Toledo caused 13000 in damage to the Newhard Drug Store stock and basement blaze. Walter R Newhard operates the store on Somerset Street and Charles R Morgan owned the building where Dr Carl Dreyer and Dr Earl Miller had offices on the second floor. Chief Joseph D Kenney said a short circuit in a stoker started the fire and a second alarm was sent at 5:24 am.
The Carey Farmers Community club met in the K of C hall with J A Vaughn as chairman and S C Cashman of Upper Sandusky as guest speaker. He spoke on 1948 farm income prospects and expenses. Next meeting committees listed. banquet for members’ wives set for February 2 at Christ Lutheran Church with dinner at 7.
Rev B L Lee of Memorial E U B Church attended the state pastor's convention in Columbus this week. He was delegated to report back to the Wyandot County Ministerial Association at its regular meeting on Monday February 9.
The W B A will hold a paper party this Friday evening January 30 at 8 15. Refreshments served by the social committee Mrs Wallace Shaffer Miss Alice Kinsinger and Mrs Cyril Baker urge all members to attend and bring guests.
The Philathea Ladies Bible class of Memorial E A B Sunday school will meet Tuesday February 3 at 7 30 pm with Mrs Mary Strouy and Mrs Raymond Jacobs assisting hostess.
Miss Virginia A Mitten of Carey is placed on the honor roll for autumn quarter at Ohio State University's College of Commerce. Secretary James McCoy announced scholastic averages of 325 or better as the basis for the distinction.
H L Tracy of Willard underwent a major stomach operation at University Hospital Cleveland Tuesday morning. His brother Ray Tracy of E North Street Carey received word Wednesday that he came through the operation satisfactorily.
The T R C club will meet this afternoon with Mrs Walter Gottfried, located east of Carey.
The Rev. Cyprian Terwoord OFM Conv will lead a parish mission at St Josephs Church Salem township from Sunday February 1 to Sunday February 8. He will lecture on Catholic beliefs with morning masses at 6 30 and a high mass at 9 00 open to all. Evening prayers and sermons follow at 7 30.
In Kenton Ohio on January 27 traffic over the Big Four line was rerouted to New York Central while workers cleared 22 derailed coal cars. No injuries were reported though 350 feet of track were torn up and a Kenton Bottling Works corner was damaged. Repairs likely by tomorrow night to restore normal service.
Burson's stays first after a 47 to 15 win over Dyna Fuel Five. Gray Motor Sales beat Moose 40-31, Faculty downed Swan Rubber 45-31. Check was top scorer with 19 points. Remaining games set for February 2 include Swan Rubber vs Dyna Fuels, Burson's vs Gray Motors, and Moose vs Faculty to open second round.
The Ridge township trustees organized by electing C. A. Walter as president and Ervin Tong as vice president. Allan Baker joined as the third member, succeeding Charles Robison who served as trustee for 165 years. Carl Bachman was clerk for eight years and is succeeded by Cletus Wisner. The trustees and clerk attended the state convention in Columbus last week.
The Carey Band Mothers' club will meet Monday evening February 2 at 8 o'clock in the school house. Important issues will be discussed and all members are urged to attend.
Paul Krupp administrator of the R M Lonsway estate oversaw a sale in which Raymond Lonsway and his brother, two sons, bought a 160 acre farm two and a half miles north of Carey for 20 500 dollars. The property appraised at 20 000 dollars.
Wyandot County Treasurer Karl F Kraus announces real estate tax books are open for the first half of December or the year 1947 for collection. Books close February 20, 1948.
The annual stockholders meeting of the Carey Farmers Cooperative Co. is set for Thursday January 29 at 1 p.m. in the Methodist Church.
