Girls Sports Night highlights at Nutshell School

The third annual Girls Sports Night at the Nutshell School gym on January 30 includes a volleyball match between students and teachers and a girls basketball game to debate a new look from mothers’ school days. A new Goal Ball game debuts, demonstrated by junior and senior girl aides, with admission 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.

All Primaries Move To May Under New Ohio Law

Attorney General Hughs notes a new Ohio statute requires all primaries to be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May each year. Previously primaries occurred in May only for presidential years and in August in other years.

Band Mothers Benefit Dance Feb 7 at School Auditorium

A benefit dance for the Carey Band Mothers club is set for Saturday evening February 7 at 8 o'clock in the school auditorium. Ohio Lutheran pastor to chair overseas relief program

Rev Wade H Koons pastor of Christ Lutheran Church chairs the Christian rural overseas program for Lutheran churches of Ohio He will convene the CROP committee for the Ohio church world service committee. The committee will represent all Protestant bodies and cooperate with Lutheran World Relief.

Fire damages wall around chimney in Forest Hingle property

About 10 am Saturday Mrs Nell Twining noticed smoke from the chimney of the Forest Hingle house. The wall around the chimney overheated from a coal stove and caught fire but the fire department quenched it before major damage. The home, occupied by Mrs Elizabeth Thomas and her son Ronald, had been remodeled last summer from a garage for the Hinges.

New Arrivals At Three Area Hospitals

A 6-pound son arrived Monday January 26 at 10:00 a m at St Vincent's hospital Toledo to Mr and Mrs R B Whiteford of 320 Hawthorne Toledo. The mother is the former Susanne Hoff daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Hoff of E South street Carey. An 8 pound 1 ounce daughter was born January 21 at 5 10 pm at San Antonio hospital Kenton to Mr and Mrs Leo Bernard of W Findlay street. She is named Mary Catherine. A son born January 7 at Christ hospital Cincinnati to Mr and Mrs Dc A Yeoman. They name David Arthur. Mrs Yeoman is the former Elizabeth Houk of W Findlay street.

Wittenberg in Serious Condition After Hip Fracture

Charles Wittenberg 82 remains in serious condition at his daughter Mrs Emery Ulrichs home on Frederick street after a fall last Tuesday broke his hip. He has lived with his daughter since December 7 coming from his son Scott Wittenberg near Kenton where he spent three months. His former home was Bellefontaine.

Marion Saints Edge Carey 47 45 In Local Gym Thriller

The Marion Saints edged the Carey Blue Devils 47 45 after a late rally by Carey fell short. Dennison scored 24 for Carey while Schuler led Marion with 23 as Snowberger anchored Carey defense and Baldauf paced Marion in the final period. A 34 24 earlier win by Marion over Carey is noted.

Valentine Party Planned by Legion Auxiliary

Fire guts Newhard Drug Store in Toledo blaze

A 5:15 am fire at 1917 Wayne Street at Fearing Boulevard in Toledo caused 13000 in damage to the Newhard Drug Store stock and basement blaze. Walter R Newhard operates the store on Somerset Street and Charles R Morgan owned the building where Dr Carl Dreyer and Dr Earl Miller had offices on the second floor. Chief Joseph D Kenney said a short circuit in a stoker started the fire and a second alarm was sent at 5:24 am.

22 Coal Cars Derail Near Kenton Causing Track Closure

In Kenton Ohio on January 27 traffic over the Big Four line was rerouted to New York Central while workers cleared 22 derailed coal cars. No injuries were reported though 350 feet of track were torn up and a Kenton Bottling Works corner was damaged. Repairs likely by tomorrow night to restore normal service.

The Ridge township trustees organized by electing C. A. Walter as president and Ervin Tong as vice president. Allan Baker joined as the third member, succeeding Charles Robison who served as trustee for 165 years. Carl Bachman was clerk for eight years and is succeeded by Cletus Wisner. The trustees and clerk attended the state convention in Columbus last week.
