James Ward son of Earl C Ward of Carey Ohio is promoted to technical sergeant in the 398th Heavy Bombardment Group. The promotion, announced by Col Frank J Hunter Sr, notes Ward as engineer gunner aboard a B 17 Flying Fortress currently in training at Chanute Field Illinois and Ardmore China. Ward graduated Carey High School in 1935 and entered the Army January 29 1941 before working for National Lime and Stone Company. His wife Violet Kate Ward hails from Upper Sandusky Ohio.

Canteen Notes Plans Birthday Celebration and Fund Drive
The teen Canteen will observe the Presidents Birthday next Sunday evening. Allotment receipts will be sent to the March of Dimes Fund. Entrance fee optional from 10 cents up. Lt Paul A Theis 21 of Fremont now serves as a Flying Fortress pilot with the 16th Air Force in the Mediterranean theater. A Carey high school graduate and Notre Dame student, he earned his wings at Moody Field on April 15 this year after enlisting December 12, 1942. His unit has flown over 400 combat missions bombing Axis targets across Europe from bases in England North Africa Russia and Italy.

Mr and Mrs John Vehre of five miles northwest of Carey learned their son John J Vehre a Navy Seaman was returning home on a nine day leave. Soldier Pvt Summerell killed in action in Europe
Mrs Bonnie A Summerell of 118 B North Street received a telegram from the war department stating her husband Pvt Summerell was killed in action. He belonged to the 1st Infantry and had been with Patton's army in France. Born in Roanoke Rapids NC, 28 years ago, he was inducted December 29 1943 and had overseas service since August. He is survived by wife Frances Morgan, daughter Mrs Billie Ward, son Bonnie Louis Summerell, two brothers James and John and a sister Mrs Eddie Hubbard. The family had lived in Carey four years after moving from Alron.

Technical Sergeant Leonard W Brodman, son of Mr and Mrs Leo C Brodman of Carey Ohio, a radio gunner aboard a B 24 Liberator, was authorized to near the Distinguished Unit Badge. He served since August 11 1942 and reached Italy in February 1944. The award to the 465th Bombardment Group cited its successful July 3 1944 attack on the Floridsdorf oil refinery at Vienna amid a heavy anti aircraft barrage.
