Clyde Fliers win a thriller against Carey Blue Devils by a last minute steal and field goal as Dick Hunt drives for a layup at the horn. High scorer Jerry Noss pours in 28 for Clyde while Dennis White and Ed Wentling pace Carey. Attica hosts JV loss 40-34.
Carey shows revenge form on its home floor overpowering Upper Sandusky 88 to 54 led by Jerry Orians with 25 points and Eddie Wentling 23 as Donnie White 18 for the Rams in a lopsided boys basketball victory. JV beat Clyde 38 32 ending a three game skid with Donnie Yingling scoring 10 and Rex Orians adding 8.
Eighth District Congressman Jackson E Betts announced principal nominations to the U S Naval Academy at Annapolis Md for the July 1957 entering class. Michael Rall of Carey and William Humphrey of Findlay named after Civil Service exam. Betts to announce Air Force Academy nominations in February.
The Upper Sandusky High School Athletic Association sent Carey High School a 57 dollar check to cover cash stolen from billfolds at the Upper Carey football game last fall. The billfolds were mostly recovered by the Upper Sandusky Police Department, but the money was not. Both schools thank the groups for settling the losses.
Township trustees and clerks from across Ohio attend the 29th annual Ohio State Association convention in Columbus at the New Veterans Memorial through Saturday. Governor O Neill and leaders like Ted Brown and William Saxbe address sessions. Carl Weygandt speaks at the banquet. Mack Sauer caps the meeting Saturday noon.
Charles W Laudenslager of N Lake Street buys Heck's Hide A Way north of town on Route 23 from Charles Heck. The deal due Jan 12 excludes the building owned by Ernest Dunn. The tavern, once run by Sherman Heck, will be redecorated and reopened as Charlies Place once work finishes.
The Times reports a correction about filing petitions for nonpartisan offices. Due to legal misinterpretation the deadline was misstated. Candidates for board of education and township trustee positions now have 90 days before the election to file.
Mrs. Harry Hickle of 317 Ash Street, a former Avon Co. sales representative, attended an Avon party at the Marion YMCA on Tuesday. She received an award for ranking as the fourth highest salesperson in Division 204.
Nutebel Cafeteria lists weekly meals for January 28 with daily items from Monday to Friday including milk. On Friday there is no school. In the afternoon the Latin II Club met and staged A School Boy's Dream with Keith Richards and James Simonis. Joyce Roynon reported on Oracles.
The Carey Poverello Federal Credit Union will hold its 7th annual meeting at 7:30 Sunday evening in the school auditorium. Election of officers and other business will be first, then entertainment and refreshments. Dr I G McDaniel will show color pictures from his Europe and Near East trip, including scenes of the Holy Land. All credit union members are urged to attend. everyone is welcome.
A Bowling Green letter from January 15 1957 commends Sylvania Blue Devils and Carey High School for sportsmanship and skill at a Bowling Green basketball game. The principal John W Parlette notes respect from both teams and attendees. He extends congratulations to Carey and its town.
Mrs Mary Myers of 322 W North Street will observe her 95th birthday on Saturday January 26. She resides with her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Maurice Gaster and though in fairly good health no celebration has been planned for the occasion.
Willis H. Houk of Carey is honored with the Estwing Gold Hammer Award for 50 years in hardware. The presentation by Estwing Manufacturing Co. marks his 69 years in public service as a hardware dealer beginning in 1888 with career moves across Naus Hardware Ash & Houk and Cosgray & Ash.
Dale Thomas announces guest speakers for the 1957 Carey Community Institute Miss June Boyd Hancock county home demonstration agent and Rev Mattern will speak February 7 evening and Friday respectively Pupil program Thursday afternoon officers for 1958 to be elected Carey Philharmonic Society will sing Thursday night and other groups entertain Friday items follow in next issue Officers from 1957 include Vice President C A Yeoman and Secretary Treasurer Mrs Reid Heck Home Arts Exhibit will be supervised by Mrs J F Dible with help from other extension group members Entries must be in by noon Feb 7 and have not been shown before Exhibits focus on needle work food and crafts with prizes in multiple classifications
Volunteers are urged for the Porchlight Drive at 7 PM on Jan 31 for the Mothers March on Polio in Carey. Call Mrs. Carl Cupp or Mrs. W. L. Stombaugh to help. Jay DeeJays and Soroptimist Club assist. Charles Reed Jr. leads March of Dimes in area with township and village chairs listed.
The Carey Jaycees offer to help the village address Memorial Park finances after the 1 mill levy renewal failed. The council notes a $3,000 park deficit even with improvements, and Jaycees pledge to assist without underwriting the full $6,000 loss.
Postmaster Po oA Schira warns aliens must report their addresses to the government by a set deadline or face penalties including fines and deportation. Reporting is required yearly except for those with diplomatic status, UN representatives, and Mexican contract laborers. Reports may be filed at the local post office.
The Carey Bowling Alley will operate on Saturday afternoons exclusively for high school students at special discounted prices.
