Carey residents return to normal after a blizzard that dumped inches of snow. Roads and schools limitedly closed, emergency declared, bread and milk ran out, but main streets cleared and mail service resumed with limited delays.
Darran Schoenberger and William Crawford, Wyandot County farm youths, receive $25 awards from the Wyandot County Council of Cooperatives to support their OSU eight week agriculture short course studies in farm equipment science animal science farm economics and accounting and agronomy. Both are alumni active in FFA and local farming. the awards fund leadership for future farming and agribusiness.
Ohio announces a public hearing at 10 a.m. Jan 29 in Upper Sandusky to discuss extending SR 199 29.77 miles through Wyandot and Seneca counties and adding SR 568 while abandoning SRs 509 330 587 and 699 in Hancock Wyandot and Crawford counties.
Mr and Mrs John Vehrs Sr of 125 Toledo Street marked 50 years of marriage on January 14 1914 in St Peters Catholic Church Upper Sandusky. Relatives from Carey Hancock County and Upper Sandusky joined at a Mass home dinner with a golden cake. The couple has two sons John Jr and Earl and two grandchildren.
The report outlines the High School gymnasium work with floor finishing sanding backboards installed and painting near complete. Remodeling of the old gym shows painting cabinet work ceilings and lighting at about 50 percent, while new gym tasks include floor finishing finish sanding sealing bleach ers installation scoreboards and exit stairs. Classrooms show 75 percent completion on painting ceilings and lighting and the multipurpose room ceiling and north facing primary entrance door are in place.
Carey Jaycees heard guest speaker William Zierolf of Zierolf Insurance at the American Legion Hall. They named David Myers Michael Ball and Larry Mates to a governmental affairs committee to attend village council sessions and report to the Jaycees. The county health fund totaled 1655.83 from the polio vaccine program to aid families facing illness. Two pairs of glasses were purchased for those unable to buy them. Two boys will again be sent to Buckeye Boys State this summer. Dale Steyer attended as a club guest.
The Carey Conservation and Sportsman's Association will hold a general membership meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Recreation Park clubhouse. If weather is bad the meeting will be postponed for a week.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service of First Methodist Church will meet at 8 p m Wednesday at Mrs. E G Ryman's home. The meeting was postponed from January 15.
Dennis Dale Leichty an 18 year old from Carey is in very serious condition at St. Vincent's Hospital Toledo with a skull fracture and possible brain damage after colliding with a Seneca county highway department dump truck on Route 53 six miles south of Tiffin. Driver Jack Edward Morgan 40 of McCutchenville reported stopping and not seeing the car as it entered the intersection.
Timothy Unser son of Mr and Mrs Ervin Unser of Tiffin will take his final vows for life as a Conventual Franciscan at 8 am Sunday January 19 in the National Shrine Church of Our Lady of Consolation. Fr Juniper Cummings will celebrant and preach.
The Wyandot Historical Society held its annual meeting at the Upper Sandusky Museum with 25 members present. Four directors were unanimously re elected: Mrs. Clarence Kark, Paul Konkle, Otto Vent, and Mrs. Elmer Hetzel.

Senior Girl Scouts from Troop 932 start work this week as library aides at Carey Public Library. They will assist with card catalogs book handling shelving and newspapers and provide book repair guidance. The program offers training and future job prospects while many volunteers already help at Wyandot Memorial Hospital and with Brownie and Junior troops. Participants include Betsy Newcomer Judy Greer Tina Lindsay Kathy Beagle Sharon Creeger Beverly Bohlen Betty Jacques Catherine Jesko Gloria Conley Zoe Zierolf Delilah Druckemiller Kathy Yates and Shelley Clinger.
The Most Rev Basil Heiser OFM Conv former rector and professor at Our Lady of Carey Seminary was named a member of the Christian Unity Secretariat by Pope Paul VI He will work with Cardinal Bea to draft schemata on Christian unity ahead of the Third Vatican Council session in autumn Heiser has held leadership roles in the Conventual Franciscans and served at St Josephs Salem Township and Carey.
February 5 at 4 p.m. is the deadline for filing nominating petitions for the May primaries. N V Armstrong Republican clerk of courts filed to seek re election. Petitions circulated by county commissioners Mott and Shuman and by several candidates for treasurer prosecutor engineer recorder sheriff coroner and sheriff. State Senator Robin Turner Tiffin seeks re election and Congressman Jackson E Betts filed petitions last week.
Congressman Jackson E Betts of the 8th Ohio District has filed his declaration of candidacy petition for reelection with the Marion county board of elections. The 6th term Republican on the Ways and Means Committee is the first to file from the district comprising Wyandot Hancock Seneca Crawford Marion Morrow and Hardin counties.

The Peoples Bank stockholders re-elected all directors at the Jan 8 meeting. Directors named were T. E. Dromgold Fred K. Ewis F. K. Cassel H. A. Lerner R. D. McGill H. E. Snyder and D. C. Twining. Officers and staff were also retained.
The Dorcas Carey Public Library board re organized for 1964 with Douglas W. Myers elected president and Dale Frazier as vice president. Other members include John Greer Paul Heck Mrs George Newhard Mrs Paul Powell and Dr Ralph Vogel. Walter Klein appointed librarian and clerk for one year with Coretta Wenner as assistant librarian. Myers succeeds Klein who resigned as president in April. Powell retires as vice president.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Kurtz sold 71 acres of their farm west of Carey to Mr and Mrs Alvin Fruth. The land lies south of the new highway. The transaction was arranged by Bill Zierolf of Zierolf Insurance and Real Estate and broker Arthur Stoll.
Hablitzel's Barber Shop will be closed from January 20 through February 3 for unspecified reasons. Residents are advised to plan appointments around the closure.
Superintendent George Coakley led crews battling Sunday and Monday snow. The plow broke down, quarry units aided, and illness and vehicle issues delayed progress. By Wednesday noon every street and alley was open, with two more days needed to finish removing piled snow. Baker of National Lime and Stone Co and Silverstein and Ritter provided trucks and equipment.
The 1964 Wyandot County Garden Club officers held a meeting January 6 at the courthouse with Mrs. Clarence Hoops presiding. Plans for the 1964 flower show are due March 1 through Dorcas Winter of the county fair board, and the Feb. 3 county gathering will select each club theme at the courthouse. Various officers and visitors from Green Thumb Garden Club and the county fair board attended.
VFW announces a Saturday event with an anniversary dance and installation of new members. Installation at 8 p.m. All members and guests invited. Dance by Decker's Red Shirts from 9 30 to 12 30.
