Hancock County records first 1969 traffic death at Wharton intersection
The 10 a.m. January 8 crash at State Route 103 and County Road 197 killed 55 year old Vanighn Bell of Route 1 Wharton instantly after his farm truck failed to stop for a stop sign and pulled into an oncoming car driven by Cornelius J. Breen 22 of Route 1 Alvada. Breen was treated for head and facial injuries at Blanchard Valley Hospital. Bell’s death was ruled accidental by Hancock County coroner Dr. Byron F Voorhees. Bell was a former school board member and local farmer with surviving relatives and a funeral at Bristoll Funeral Home.

The Dorcas Carey Public Library board held a reorganization meeting led by President Paul Burson. New officers for 1969 were elected: Mrs. Robert Gibson as President, Mrs. Wendell Myers as Vice President, and Mrs. Robert Klinger as Secretary. Chester M Vogel 63 of Route 2 Carey was found dead at his residence Sunday January 15 1969 by his daughter. Investigating Wyandot County Sheriff and county coroner say cause of death not determined. He was born August 12 1905 in Wyandot County married Cora Wohlgung in 1925. Survived by daughter Betty Castret of Fostoria two brothers Noble and Roy and three grandchildren. Burial in Zion Broom Cemetery south of Vanlue after services at Christ Lutheran Church officiated by Rev George Cressman Bristoll Funeral Home in charge.

Auto Hits Tree Injuring Carey Man
A 20 year old Carey man, James R Osborne, was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Tiffin with severe facial and neck lacerations after his 1965 two door sedan struck a tree in front of 45 West Tiffin Street New Riegel on icy roads Monday morning January 6. Sheriff’s deputies said Osborne lost control on the slippery pavement while driving southwest on West Tiffin Street.

Upper Sandusky FFA chapter dominates the Wy andoft County Pest Hunt, averaging 1026.8 points daily and guiding Carey FFA to second place while Mohawk takes third. Top hunter Darrel Frey led with 22 625 points and Lee Geary from Mohawk followed with 14 855. The three schools together killed 9 306 sparrows and 1332 rats among other pests during a one month contest.

In the January 10 1969 issue the council clarifies that chlorination references do not apply to Careys drinking water. The Mayors office did not propose nor did the council approve a contract with McGill Smith Engineering. Agreement was reached to build a relief sanitary sewer and install chlorination equipment at the Wastewater Treatment Plant to meet Pollution Control Improvements and secure permits to discharge treated effluent from Wyandot Avenue.

Death of Mrs Felix Stern Former Carey Times Publisher’s Daughter
Word has been received of the December 26 1968 death in Glencoe Illinois of Mrs Josefa Thrall Stern daughter of Homer Thrall and Eloise Thrall former publishers of The Carey Times for sixty years. She was born in Litchfield Ohio lived in Carey many years attended Ohio State University edited women’s and society departments in Findlay Columbus and Toledo. After marriage she lived in Chicago moving to Glencoe in 1924. her husband died in 1949. She leaves a daughter Miss Lotta R Stern.
