School notes recap a Merry Christmas and New Year cheer with students wearing bright sweaters and a Santa visit. Harvey Jacoby returns to class from an absence since November and a senior and teacher reveal new glass eyes.
Principal Huffman received a notice from Superintendent Lindmuth that Carey High School will host the Class B sectional tournament for 1937 at the Carey gym. Schools from Hancock to Crawford counties are invited, with 14 teams expected. Two weekends of playoff action lead to a Columbus finals at the Coliseum.
The junior class held a Monday meeting to elect a ring committee to choose rings for the final class decision. Virginia Mitchell Gladys Wickham and Clyde Shull were chosen and met with the ring salesman, the style was chosen and rings ordered.
The senior class elected a committee of Helen Wonder Barbara Exline and Harold Shumaker to select commencement invitations for class approval. A staff meeting decided to seek help publishing the annual. Harvey Jacoby was elected alumni editor at a senior class meeting.
Daily winners for the week before Christmas were Wendell Myers Monday Doris Keeler Tuesday Nina Kennerley Wednesday. Wendell was the individual winner and Row B won the weekly group title. Spelling dictation 100 percent receivers named: Charles Clark Dick Clouser Norma Jean Coldren June Dible Margaret Dill Martha Hewett Donald Hinebaugh Billy Howard Junior Hunter Mabel Keckler Richard Luabh Richard Lessig Bobby Nye Harold Putnam Francis Ritter Ray Taylor Clarence Tong Richard Ward.
Row A topped arithmetic races the week of Christmas with Nadene Gibson named weekly winner. Spelling dictation honors reached 104 percent for pupils including Alice Coldiron De Moyne England Nadene Gibson Eleanor Greene Mary Heck and others.
Ted Bowlus of Pemberville assumed the management of the Carey Mill & Elevator Co. on January 1, succeeding P. A. Hendricks. A 1932 Ohio State graduate, Bowlus has worked with his father in Pemberville’s elevator business and the Hobart Bowlus firm also runs a department store. He invites the community to visit and get acquainted, promising a warm welcome.
The Carey Community Institute names its 1937 committees including Finance Exhibits Building Accommodations Publicity Posters and more with members such as Irvin Wentling J T Myers and Rev Marion B E Tinsler. A meeting at the public library refined plans as the institute eyes a larger program and notes state aid has ended, shifting costs to locals.
Walter Fout, watchman at the Findlay street crossing of the New York Central lines, appeals for caution after several children on bicycles narrowly escaped being struck by trains. He notes kids ride up to the tracks without looking for trains or the watchman and urges greater care.
Bucyrus L O O M and chapter invite Carey to Bucyrus next Sunday January 10 for a joint district meeting and initiation class. The meeting begins at 2 30 p m with social and cards at 7 30 pm. All members friends and the public are invited. Mary Wallace state chairman will attend.
Rev Glen F Robinson of Wharton who oversees the Wharton Vanlue and Crawford Methodist churches started a series of revival meetings at Crawford last Sunday and plans to continue through this week or longer.
The CIC class of Memorial Evangelical church will meet Friday at 7 30 PM at Mrs John Sheridan’s home on E Findlay Street with Mrs Ralph Veith of Upper Sandusky assisting as hostess.
An important Crawford-Ridge Farm Bureau meeting will be held at Moosehall Wednesday evening January 13. All members are urged to be present.
The W. C. T. U. will meet at the Methodist parsonage on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Peggy Laird five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs G G Laird is ill with pneumonia.
Local merchants report 1936 ends on a high note with improved sales and unemployment. Shoppers crowded streets and bought luxury gifts, signaling greater spending power. Postal receipts set records while farm prices rose, helping farmers and the town feel confident for 1937. Carey merchants kept prices low compared with other centers, drawing more shoppers.
The Young People's League of Memorial Evangelical church installed officers at a candlelighting service. New leaders include President Wilford Shuman, Vice President Hazel Dible, Secretary Arlens Perkins, Treasurer Walter Roynon, and Corresponding Secretary Dread Tong, with pianists, choristers, and department chairmen named.
Mr and Mrs Adam Amerine who live on the Crislip farm north of town will move this spring to a 30 acre farm at the junction of route 23 and the county line road They recently purchased the property from John Myers Jr Mr Amerine will hold a public auction February 16.
The Carey Handle & Lumber Co. completed a two story building with a fitted office upstairs. The former one story frame office on West Street was vacant at year start as the company relocated to the new quarters.
Jack Green six year old son of Mr and Mrs William Green was brought home from Findlay Home and Hospital where he had New Year Day surgery to remove a sac of pus on his skull caused by a severe cold with ear infection. He remains in serious condition.
The Wesleyan Guild of the Methodist Sunday school will hold a regular meeting next Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Samuel Gunther. Assisting hostesses will be Mrs Alfred Davis Mrs Lawrence Bland and Mrs C C Thome.
The local C K of C lodge hosts a public dance in their hall on Thursday evening. Corfman's Graveliers will provide the music for the event.
Mrs. Alonzo Green will host the P. R. S. club this Thursday afternoon. The annual election of officers will be held.
A Townsend club holds a meeting at the public library on Monday evening January 11 at 8 o'clock. Elza Garn serves as secretary.
Eleven men from Wyandot county attend the hybrid corn school at Ohio State University to prepare for growing corn hybrids for seed. Three past apprentices Schoenberger, Shane, and Schoenberger will have seed stock to grow about 35 acres in 1937. new apprentices include Stephen, Passet, Pool, Failor, Berg, Hollands head, Walton, and DeBolt for 1937 with aim to meet 1938 local seed demand. It is nearly impossible to secure more hybrid seed this year.
Miss Lucille Arend daughter of Mrs Margaret Arend and Thomas Hucke son of Mrs Chris Hucke were married New Years morning at 6 15 in Our Lady of Conception Church by Rev Paul Voll Rath. The ceremony used the single ring service and Low Mass. The bride's cousin Bernice Jenet and Norman Arend attended. A wedding breakfast followed at the bride's mother's home.
The annual meeting of stockholders of The Peoples Bank Company of Carey Ohio will be held at the banking house on Wednesday January 13 1937 between 730 and 830 PM. Directors will be elected for the ensuing year and other business may be transacted. T E Dromgold president.
Local Wyandot county applicants must go to Upper Sandusky on the first Friday of each month for auto license examinations. Hancock county residents will be examined in Findlay on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
The Pythian Sisters hold a regular meeting this Thursday followed by practice for installation. The installation itself will be held on Thursday evening January 14.
The Kiwanis club gathered the largest attendance in weeks at the Pilgrim House for a Monday meeting led by President Hamiler Rev Marion E B Tinsler pastor of Carey First Methodist spoke on Closer Cooperation Between Families and Communities During 1937 His talk was well received and the membership and finance committees were announced with Cyprian Verwoord as chair.
The letter thanks supporters who bought Christmas Seals for Wyandot County, noting the funds help save lives protect eyesight prevent disease spread and fund a Public Health Nurse. The Ohio pari mutuel system generated 111,499 in gross revenue for 1936, up 5,188 from 1935 despite a shorter season. Wagers totaled 6,772,751 across 216 racing days at all operating tracks, per Secretary Thomas J. Ryan.
Under church direction pastors from the Toledo District exchange pulpits for January. On Sunday January 10 Rev Stanley A. Miller of Findlay preaches at Carey for morning worship, while Rev Marion E. Tinsler, the local pastor, preaches at Howard Memorial Methodist church in Findlay at the same hour.
Graham Riley, longtime manager of the Ohio Fuel Gas Co local office, has been transferred to a similar post in North Baltimore. He assumed duties there on Monday, January 4. Jack Montgomery of Findlay becomes the new manager in charge of the local office, and Mr and Mrs Montgomery and their son Jimmy plan to move to Carey soon.

Mr and Mrs Guy Chesebrough sold their S Patterson Street home to Harry Stoll of southwest of Carey and bought a 94 acre farm formerly part of the Frankenfield estate located three miles south of Tiffin near Melmoore. They will take possession March first.
Mrs Fred Bakies reports the death of her great aunt Mrs John Simonis of Minden Nevada. She died January 1 and was buried January 4 in Genoa Nevada.
The Young Ladies Sodality will sponsor a mixed dance at the Catholic hall on Thursday evening January 14. Graham Riley's orchestra will play. The public is invited.
The 1st and 2nd grades work on a Mother Goose project and an alphabet picture book. The 5th and 8th grades regret two classmates’ loss while Donald Gangway returns to Fostoria and Dean Niederkohr travels with his father to Florida. Eugene Schriener of the 5th grade is taken to Mercy Hospital for an emergency appendectomy. New clothing items in the cloakroom show Christmas money was spent wisely.
The Carey Times announces it is now the sales representative for Wilson-Jones Co Shelby Salesbook Co and Shaw-Walker Co. The firms supply loose leaf forms salesbooks office furniture and related equipment with reliable quality reasonable prices and quick service.
Word has it that world famed missionary E Stanley Jones will speak in Columbus on Friday January 15 at the local Methodist church. Seats are set aside for church members and interested observers should see the pastor. Jones is known for Christ of the Indian Road and Christ's Alternative to Communism.
Paul Davidson, 3 years old, son of Mr and Mrs Henry Davidson, was taken to Findlay hospital Monday for lung drainage after a pneumonia illness. He had been improving until the operation. Mrs Edmund Pahl and Fr Wenceslaus visited during the procedure.
Palm Leaf Rebekah Lodge will install officers for the coming year on Tuesday January 12 at 7 30 PM during a regular meeting. A pot luck supper will follow. Practice for installation is scheduled for Monday at 7 30 PM.
On Tuesday January 19 the men of the Methodist church and the community will gather for a Mensa Night program at the church A tentative menu features a novel Indian dish The program will feature Clayvee H Duttweiler former president of the Lakeside Institute.
Officers of the Adrian Rebekah lodge will be installed January 13 by Mrs. Grace Moser assisted by Mrs. Lulu Clause. Supper will precede installation.
