Nutshell School News notes Carey High School seniors Ruth Calmes Jane Haford and Horace Newhard placed high in the Pepsi Cola Scholarship Contest. In Ohio the trio ranked among top ten percent nationwide, with 600 of 44000 students scoring higher overall.
Nine seniors from Carey High School sat for state scholarship tests on Saturday February 7 at Upper San Dusty High School with Superintendent George A. Hartman assisting in administering the exam.
The Monday evening meeting featured a sound color film about modern railroading, its equipment and vital role in industry produced by the American Railroad Association. The film was secured for the club by women S. J. Watkins and G. Wickens of the A. C. and Y. Several guests attended and a new member was welcomed. A brief directors' meeting followed the adjournment.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a Valentine party in the Legion hall on Thursday evening February 12. A teen dinner will be served at 6:30. Members of both organizations are urged to attend and assist with table service. The program is planned by a committee including Mrs. James Lindsay, Mrs. Paul App, Mrs. L. G. Altwater, Mrs. William Spackey, Mrs. Francis Morley, and Mrs. Clifford Holden.
Organizations seeking requisition forms for Ohio World War II compensation must send requests to the Wyandot County Service Officer in Upper Sandusky. Blank forms will be provided. completed duplicates must be returned by February 20, 1948.
The Carey Research Club meeting with Mrs. Anna Lantz was postponed and will be rescheduled. Awaiting a new date to be announced.
A representative from the Marion field office of the Social Security Administration will be at the municipal building in Carey at 3 00 p.m. on Tuesday February 17 to assist the public with SSA services and inquiries.
The Rev Royal EB Lesher evangelism secretary of the United Lutheran Church in America will be at Christ Lutheran Church next Sunday February 15 for a day of meetings. He preaches at 10:30 a m on Evangelism in the Church Today. A 3 pm conference with Lutheran lay workers from Nevada Upper Sandusky and Tiffin follows. At 6 30 pm he speaks to the Carey Young Adult Lutheran group.
On February 9 Carey review No 27 hosted Findlay review No 22 for a dinner and lodge meeting. Mrs Denis DeVene installed the 1948 officers of the Findlay review with sixteen Carey members participating. A regular meeting is set for Friday at 8 PM in the Moose hall followed by notices of a February 20 meeting at Mrs Ervin Black and Miss Martha Black homes with a potluck.
George Messmer of S Vance Street underwent an operation for a ruptured appendix at Mercy Hospital in Tiffin. He was very ill last week but improved by Sunday evening and remains in the hospital. He received four blood transfusions from Friar Berard of Our Lady of Carey seminary, August Windau, Andrew Collet, and Richard Kitzler.
Mrs Effie Gibbs, residing with Mrs Myrtle Perkins on N Vance Street, has recovered enough from injuries suffered January 3 to return from Toledo where she stayed with her son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs A E Gibbs. She was struck by an auto driven by Homer Risner, the crash caused by icy pavement.
Residents urged to offer an old building suitable for a controlled burn as a demonstration site for the Crawford township fire truck. Prefer a standalone structure near town outskirts to minimize fire risk. notify Fire Chief Don Hunter.
ENLISTED in NAVY Carl R Barrett Jr has enlisted for three years service in the United States navy and is in training at Great Lakes Illinois He is the son of Carl R Barrett Sr of Syracuse New York and Mrs Glenrose Barrett of Findlay Ohio He enlisted six weeks ago.

Last week 2150 telephones on the Carey exchange east of Patterson street were out of commission. Problems began January 31 reported by EB A Clingaman, local manager, with emergency repairs keeping most lines working. By February 3 the outage worsened as a conduit crossing Findlay street froze underground, compressing ice and shorting 200 pair cables. Bellevue crew arrived Friday morning and restored service by Friday afternoon.
The Women's and Jennie Larmonth missionary societies of Christ Lutheran Church announce five consecutive Monday prayer sessions beginning February 16 at 7 30 PM. Each week features a theme such as God So Loved the World Abide in Me Greater Works Than These The Testimony of Faith and Keep Asking inviting all churchwomen to attend.
The Carey Farmers' and Sports men's club will meet Thursday evening February 12 at 8 o'clock in the Eagles hall. There will be an election of officers and refreshments will be served. If you are interested in conservation and organization you are requested to attend this meeting.
Miss Celia Schriner sold the six room modern home on N Vance street once owned and occupied by the late Mr and Mrs Fred Schriner to Mr and Mrs William F Simonis. The Stevens Realty agent Arthur N Stevens arranged the sale as the buyers plan moving soon.
Mrs. Jerome Weinandy of Clay Street slipped on ice near her home Saturday evening and dislocated her ankle and broke her leg. She was treated by a Findlay physician and returned home, with Bristoll's ambulance transporting her.
The Mary-Martha class of Christ Lutheran will meet next Monday at 8 p m with Mrs Wade H Koons as hostess chair. Mrs Arden Heilman will chair and Mrs George Savidge and Mrs G A Hartman Sr will assist as hostesses in the event.

The United Council of Church Women sponsors the World Day of Prayer in Carey at 2 p.m. Friday February 13 at In Christ Lutheran Church. Women across the U S and 55 nations join in prayer for peace forgiveness and world needs with special music and a listed roster of participants and organizers.
Judge F C Bowers of Urbana will be principal speaker at the Carey Community Institute to be held in the high school auditorium on February 26 and 27. He chairs committees in the Ohio Juvenile Judges association and serves as secretary of the Ohio State Probate Judges association and Champaign county probate and juvenile judge. He is noted for expertise on wills and juvenile delinquency and will address both afternoon and evening sessions.
A Home Arts display will be held at the Carey Community Institute on Thursday and Friday February 26 and 27. Anyone may bring homemade articles including sewing embroidery crocheting knitting quilts comforts and rugs as well as home baked goods. Entries accepted Thursday February 21 6 before 4 p m.
Heck and Son will auction 93 Ayrshire cows and 8 bulls next Saturday at noon, then stay in dairy but shift to buying milk from accredited producers and bottling at their plant 2% miles northwest of Carey, citing labor uncertainties.
Last Thursday the Carey fire department responded to a blaze at Chuck & Luke's north of Carey and another fire near the chimney. Early Monday a fire near George Heck's Crawford home caused by an overheated stove led to only slight damage.
Max Silverstein was discharged to home from Findlay hospital on Tuesday with his father Joe Silverstein. He had been a patient eight days, during which he underwent an appendectomy operation.
Roy England 17 son of Mr and Mrs Francis England of Wharton enlisted in the United States army on January 26. He is in training at Lackland Air Base San Antonio Texas.
Funeral services were held for Pfc Andrew Frank Reinhart 27 of New Riegel at St Nicholas church Frenchtown led by Rev Joseph Brobst. He died in France July 10 1944 after enlisting February 4 1942 and serving with the 8th Armored Division engineers earning the good conduct medal. Burial followed at the parish cemetery.
A Carey contingent attended the annual Boy Scout Fellowship Dinner held Monday evening at the Marion armory. The event featured World Jamboree pictures and served dinner to about 200 guests. James Robinson of Troop 13 earned Eagle Scout honors at a ceremony broadcast by WMRN in Marion.
Ridge township Triple A farm sign up for 1948 occurs Thursday and Friday February 12 and 13 from 1 to 9 pm at the Ridge township house. No house to house canvassing this year. Russell Wicks er is committee chairman. Crawford township farmers meet at Carey public library same time to sign up J A Vaughn committee chairman.
The Dorcas Bible class of the Methodist Sunday school holds a noon chicken dinner at Mrs Grant Johnson’s home on Toledo street. Each member brings a covered dish and her own table service. All who can attend are asked to come.
Mrs John Jacoby of 5 Lake Street sustained a broken left arm at the wrist after she fell on the icy sidewalk Wednesday afternoon of last week. The incident occurred directly across Clay Street from the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation.
Street lights failed in parts of town for a week due to a mechanical breakdown caused by overloaded fuses at the water plant in the west area.
Carey High Blue Devils beat Mt. Gilead 50 to 38 for their 6th win and third in league. Dennison led Carey with 17 points while Mt. Gilead’s Kelly scored 19. teams combined for 29 fouls and uneven shooting in a rough contest.

Burson's tops the standings with a 5-0 record, scoring 211 points to 130 by opponents. Heck leads with 73 points across the series, while C Heck and M Snyder each had 21 in the latest games. Next week feature Moose vs Burson's and other matchups.
Wm O Denning of Cleveland, purchasing agent for the Denning Manufacturing Co, visits Carey. The $300,000 concern run by his father makes high production dies for metal stamping and lamination. He is known locally for wartime service and postwar theater work with Leo n Jones of Upper Sandusky.
On Sunday January 11 the infant son of Mr and Mrs Harold Fleece of 163 Newhard Street was baptized at Our Lady of Consolation Church. Rev Mark Mindrup OFMConv officiated. William Allen was born December 22 1947 at Findlay hospital weighing 9 pounds. Sponsors were Mr and Mrs Michael Vaughn of Worello Street. The mother Mary Louise Vaughn is daughter of Mr and Mrs W A Vaughn east of Carey.
The next regular meeting of the Methodist Brotherhood will feature Father and Son Night on Tuesday February 17 at 745 p.m. All men of the church are urged to attend with their sons or another boy. A program of interest to all is planned. Robert Gardner, President.
