Public School Notes and Faculty Absences

The report notes Mr. Mulholland’s absence and no replacement science teacher, with O. Ke Caldwell of Fostoria High filling in for the week. Five basketball games are scheduled next week, Nevada Tuesday and Upper Sandusky Friday. Miss Mary Beremian is among the sick. Supt Earl B. Driver missed the Columbus meeting due to faculty shortages. Caldwell sang two solos in chapel and impressed students. Inclement weather moved the picture show to the West building to avoid walking to Colonel Crawford.

Navy induces discharge for Twining on foot and sight issues

Clayton Twining recently inducted into the United States Navy received an honorable discharge on Wednesday December 22. He served 14 days at the naval training station Great Lakes Illinois and was discharged due to foot and eyesight conditions.

Christmas Visitors Share Meals Across Carey Area

Christmas week was spent with relatives across Carey and surrounding towns. Mr and Mrs C W Lanning hosted in Biglick township. Sgt Corrine Krupp visited from Pittsburgh with her parents the Krupps west of Carey. numerous families welcomed guests including the Haines and Buckinghams on Christmas Day. Harold Turnbell and Avie Turnbell visited from Carnegie Tech and Wooster College. extended families shared dinners and gift exchanges in Findlay and south of Carey.

Leonard Lasley aged 14 of West street slipped on an icy sidewalk Wednesday afternoon and broke his right arm near the wrist. He had planned to start work at Mathern's bakery that afternoon. The same bone was broken last October at the high school auditorium.

Mrs. Agnes Shull reports from home that her son Clayton, now a sergeant at Camp Haan California, is in good health. He is one of four Shull brothers serving in the armed forces with Pfc Harold in Italy, Sgt Harry in Australia, Cpl Clyde in England, and Clayton in California.

Fire Destroys Roof of Home in Carey

The Carey fire department battled a roof blaze on the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Bakies on West Mindlay street after chimney sparks ignited the roof. The fire destroyed the roof before crews controlled it. owned by Ruszat Zeis, insured, damage not yet estimated. A separate incident on Lake Street involved a cushion in a car belonging to Luther Ritter catching fire, extinguished by firefighters.

Chest Drive Pledges Reach 3740 Despite Shortfall

At a Carey Community Chest executive meeting held Monday at the library officers announced pledges totaled 3740 though 376 short of the goal. Donations may still be made to board members or at Harry's Drug Store or Houk's Hardware with payments due by February 1. Special thanks were given to Houk's Hardware Bursons Clothing Store and Harry's Drug Store and to the many solicitors listed including Mrs J A Vaughn Miss Isabelle Collet and Mrs Frances Hinsdall. Evans family reports her husband promoted to petty officer first class as of December 1, serving as a gunner on a United States minesweeper. Mr and Mrs E C Dodds of Crawford were weekend guests of Dodds’ son-in-law and daughter John Carrothers and Mae Edith in Bellecenter and with Metellus Smith and Mary in Mt Victory. Mr Smith joined them for a few weeks visit. Pvt Glenn Walborn will go to Fort Dix New Jersey for hospital care after a 15 day furlough with his wife in Findlay and his parents Grove Walborn Sr. on S Muncie Street. Walborn served with the U S Signal Corps in England in recent months.
