Mrs. Ida Deidrick of Vanlue marks her 96th birthday on December 19 while living alone in a five room home. She stays active with house work and braids rag rugs for relatives. The longtime Vanlue E U B Church member has 44 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Christmas Program At Crawford Church

Crawford Methodist Church held a Christmas program on Sunday December 23 during the church hour. The program included music scripture a play by the Junior Class and a closing sermon by Rev Daniel Francis of India. After the service Mr and Mrs Delmer Lortz and Mr and Mrs Herbert Lortz gave a treat to attendees.

Mrs Clarence Cole Celebrates 94th Birthday

Mrs Clarence Cole of Findlay celebrated her 94th Christmas Day birthday. She is confined to a wheelchair after a hip fracture in August. Her six children visit, and she stays busy crotcheting linen handkerchief edges and making gifts such as pincushions and golden slippers.

Miss Mary Pahl to enter Poor Clares novitiate in Cleveland

Miss Mary Pahl daughter of Mrs George Pahl Tiffin and the late Mr Pahl will enter the novitiate of the Monastery of the Poor Clares in Cleveland on January 6. She was salutatorian of Calvert High School class of 1956 and has many relatives in Tiffin.

Fred Mitchell Retires After 40 Years at New York Central

Fred Mitchell will retire December 31 after exactly 40 years and 3 months with the New York Central Railroad. He spent 20 years as freight house foreman and the last 20 as clerk, began under Jay Lytle after four years at the local post office. A Carey resident since 1920, native of New Castle Pennsylvania, he turned 73 on December 19 and married in 1911. He and his wife raised six daughters at 206 Clay Street, where he plans to rest and perhaps travel when weather allows.

Christmas Guests Share Large Carey Area Dinner

Christmas gatherings filled many homes with extended families and friends. Dozens of guests from Carey Bucyrus North Baltimore Upper Sandusky Wharton and surrounding areas attended dinners and parties. The day featured photos contests and music plus two wedding anniversaries and a birthday.

Wednesday offers porcupine meat balls with baked squash brown bread butter apple and milk. Thursday features corned beef hash buttered beets Waldorf salad bread butter and milk. Friday serves tuna chop suey chef salad bread butter peach crisp and milk.

Latin II Club Hosts Christmas Potluck and Play

On Monday evening December 17 the Latin II Club gathered at Mrs George New hard’s home for a potluck supper and gift exchange after trimming the tree. Earlier that day the group staged a Latin Christmas play in English comparing a Roman Saturnalia with a modern American Christmas. Many nice gifts were received.

Music Students Present Christmas Concert

The Carey School music students staged an annual Christmas concert on Sunday afternoon December 16. About 200 pupils participated, featuring the school band and four vocal groups. The program was directed by Miss Schwemley and Mr. Bixler.

The Harry Orwick family met at the Lewis Gottfried farm near Upper Sandusky with Dennis Orwick. many relatives from Salem township Crawford Pemberville Arlington Adran Findlay and North Baltimore attended a buffet dinner and festive gift exchange. A separate dinner celebrated ltacky Orwick with Herbert H Muller and others. William T Welsh serves at Shaw Air Force Base while SP 3 Thomas J Windau in Germany is remembered in letters.

Carey Blue Devils Rout Cory-Rawson In Friday Clash

Carey Blue Devils used a big third quarter to beat Cory-Rawson 61-50 led by Eddie Wentling with 21 points and Dennis White 19. Jerry Orlans added 14 as Carey controlled the boards, while Cory-Rawson struggled in the final period. The Carey JV crushed Cory-Rawson 61-30 and North Baltimore Game notes followed with Carey overpowering NB 67-38 on Tuesday.

The Northern Ohio Telephone Company filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio for a rate repricing based on a $40,500,816 plant value set by Gustav Hirsch. Current rates stay in effect until the commission decides, with proposed changes including higher local and toll charges and adjustments to business and residence service rates.

Student nurse to train at Crippled Children’s Hospital

Miss Barbara Rothgeb, a senior at Lima Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, will begin a three month course at Crippled Children’s Hospital in Columbus on January 1. She just completed three months of special training at Toledo State Hospital. She visited with her parents Mr and Mrs Albert Rothgeb and sister Miss Mary in Frederick Street for Christmas.

Kermit Mundy of Nance Street remains in critical condition at Blanchard Valley Hospital after two weeks as a patient. A family member says he suffered a broken back and his condition worsened on Monday.

Mrs J J Ruehle of Adrian quietly marked her 90th birthday Friday at the Drew Fox residence 229 E Wyandot Ave Upper Sandusky where she has lived for months. Charles Mericle announces his retirement as manager of the Carey Furniture Store effective January 1. He will remain as a part time salesman. Mericle has been in Carey furniture since 1938, and led the store through 1956, its best year. He plans time for fishing and invites customers to continue patronizing the store.

The village council adjourned 1956 sessions after a lengthy Dec 17 meeting. A salary raise for village employees was approved, increasing the budget by 1200.
