Biggest Fire In Carey Destroyed Carey Mill And Ice House

On May 3 1928 the Carey Mill and Elevator burned in a spectacular blaze. Fire crews from Carey and neighboring towns fought for hours, saving the business district but the mill, ice house, and flour warehouse were destroyed. The loss exceeded available insurance.

Christmas Program at Hi School Chapel

A Friday afternoon Christmas program in the Hi School Chapel featured a piano prelude by Geralda Mae Moser and performances including a violin solo by Bernadine Hull, a “Silent Night” singalong, and a cornet and accordion recital. The one act play “Why the Chimes Rang” depicted Holger and Steen guarding an old woman as the chimes eventually rang, teaching that gifts matter when given with goodwill and faith.

Death of Sister Theresa Stauffer at Bucyrus

Sister Theresa Stauffer died at her Bucyrus home at 1:30 am on Thursday December 19 after a heart illness. Born in 1853 at North Robinson, she lived much of her life in Bucyrus and served as a Methodist church member and helper to the sick and the needy. She leaves two sisters Elizabeth Stauffer of Bucyrus and Mrs O W Squier of Carey, with brothers James M Frank and Edward gone before her. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, Bucyrus.

Santa visits Carey with candy for 950 children

Santa arrived in Carey on Saturday in festive North Pole attire and handed out candy to 950 local children. D A Capell, Strand theatre proprietor, provided two free afternoon shows that drew packed houses.

Christmas Matins at Christ Lutheran Church

The usual Christmas Matins will be held at Christ Lutheran church on Wednesday morning at 6 00 o'clock. The senior choir will sing a short cantata The Birth of Christ by Richter. Special numbers include a piano organ duet O Little Town of Bethlehem by Wilson performed by Miss Howard and Mrs Walter Myers Findlay. The junior choir will sing carols and Miss Louise Van Buren will solo Silent Night. Public is invited to attend this service.

The local Methodist church planned Christmas services with a 9 30 Sunday school program of readings and songs. The 10 30 worship featured The Wondrous Gift and The Christmas Song performances by church groups and a 6 30 Epworth League carol rehearsal. On Tuesday Epworth League members will sing carols at shut ins homes and Christmas Day services are canceled.

The Memorial Evangelical Church Sunday school presented a miscellaneous program at 1040 forenoon on Sunday to a warm reception. A treat was distributed to the younger children. In the evening the league members presented another Christmas program.

Pythian Sisters Christmas Party Highlights

The Pythian Sisters hosted a successful Christmas party on Thursday night featuring an exchange, pot luck supper, and a varied program. Emergency School Again Available for Wyandot County

Wyandot County receives funds from Works Project headquarters in Columbus to sustain adult education for six months. The current class, taught by P Cowgill in mechanical drawing and blueprint reading, may expand to additional topics if interest grows. Classes are held Tuesday and Friday evenings in the high school sewing room, with open enrollment for residents over 18.

The Men's Brotherhood of Christ Lutheran church held a supper and meeting in the parish hall last Thursday. W B Montague and O W McKnight led songs, H L Wenner and Howard Snyder spoke, and Rev Paul Hollingshead of Tiffin gave an address titled The Christmas Man in this Modern World. Fifty men attended.

Handsome Christmas Present From Priests in Douglas

Frank Miller received a mounted antelope head and neck as a Christmas present from his son Rev Othmar Miller O M C of Douglas Wyoming. The horns measure 12 inches. Fr Bruno and Fr Ignatius, both stationed at Douglas, shot the animal. The priests oversee a large territorial ministry with distant churches over a hundred miles away.

Births Report Two Newborns Near Wharton and Alvada

A 9 pound daughter arrived Friday morning to Mr and Mrs Virgil Gase seven miles north of town. A 10% pound son named Roger Dale was born Tuesday morning to Mr and Mrs Lester Moser two and a half miles northeast of Wharton. Mrs Moser's mother Mrs Orville Phillips from west of Alvada is caring for the mother and child.

George Baughman Dies at 82 in Bellefontaine

George Baughman aged 82 died Saturday evening at his son Robert's home in Bellefontaine. Funeral services are set for 2:00 PM Tuesday at St. Pauls Church south of Vanlue.
