Who Boosts the Taxes A 1924 Tax Burden Update
Figures from the National Industrial Conference Board show total taxes collected by federal state and local governments in 1924 at 7 907 000 000. Federal taxes fell by 125 000 000 while state taxes rose 119 000 000 and local taxes increased 147 000 000, wiping out government savings and raising the overall tax load. Since 1919 federal taxation trended downward as state and local taxes climbed, with 1924 state and local taxes more than three times their 1913 level. The piece argues for tax relief at the local level, noting federal cuts alone cannot offset local increases and wartime tax policies are untenable.
