Carey shoppers will enjoy free parking in the business district starting next week and continuing through Christmas. The 2 hour limit remains in effect while merchants and their employees are asked to use regular spaces as a courtesy to shoppers.
Several births announced from Wyandot Memorial Hospital and nearby towns. Families include Frank Holman and Virgilia Clause’s daughter at 8 pounds 984 ounces. The Prince of Peace contest was held Sunday at Memorial E U B Church and Trinity Evangelical in Upper Sandusky. David Degler of Upper Sandusky won the silver key. Carol Sue Barger was selected as alternate. In Upper Sandusky Deanne Jarvis of McCutchenville placed first with Neil Hartschuh of Sycamore as alternate. Mignon McChesney competed at the Carey church and Sibyl Wentling at Upper Sandusky.
Carey Fire department was called twice on Friday. At 3 p.m. Mrs. Harry Shull’s auto on St Marys Avenue backfired and caught fire blistering paint. An hour later a gas ignition due to faulty heater equipment in the Sam Stone duplex on Grove Street caused no damage to the apartment.
Edgar Keller a Buick dealer and W H Ruffing William Keller and Leo Beagle salesmen for Carey Motor Service Inc attended a salesman training school at the General Motors Training Center in Parma Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs James Hagerman and daughter Bambi relocate to 327 Second Street in Upper Sandusky. Hagerman had been living with his mother Mrs Mary Hagerman while his wife and daughter visited Lisbon Maine.
Handel's oratorio The Messiah will be performed Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Seiberling gymnasium Tiffin by Heidelberg College and community choirs under director Ferris E. Ohl. An orchestra led by C. W. Assenheimer will accompany the 250 voices. John S. Welsh of Carey sits in the first violin section. About 500 seats are reserved and 1500 are free. the public is invited.
The Vanlue Community Progressive Association elected its 1957 officers at the Dec 5 meeting in the Town Hall with Clair Oman presiding. Officers include Dale Rickle president Frank Kitchel first vice president Kenneth Nye second vice president Charles Bibler secretary Mrs Eddie Jenkins assistant secretary Harold E Hinkle reporter John Dipert assistant reporter Roy Moser trustee for a 3 year term. The next meeting is Jan 2 at 8 p.m. at the Town Hall.
Postmaster J A Schira reminds all aliens in the United States on January 1 must report their address within 30 days to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. In Carey aliens may obtain the address report card at the post office and submit it to a clerk. Forms available January 1. Failure to report may lead to custody and deportation with possible imprisonment or fines.
Mrs A J Hart of Dunedin Florida renews her Times subscription and notes that Carey paper has continued delivery to her husband’s home since his death and now to her home as a Christmas gift to Carey citizens.
Dale Van Horn six year old son of Ralph and Mrs Van Horn of southwest of Carey fell nine feet from a corncrib onto a concrete driveway. He was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital where X rays showed no fracture but he remained semi conscious until Friday noon and then returned home to recover.
Contributions are still being accepted at the Carey Times office for Hungarian Relief. Local residents have already responded to the American Red Cross appeal. Wyandot County's quota is 502 dollars while the national appeal seeks 5 million dollars.
Mr and Mrs M D Shafer departed Wednesday for Woodall s Trailer Village Lakeland Florida where they will spend the winter at the mobile home park name and location given for the season residence plans.
The plan outlines daily meals from Monday to Friday with items such as chili and garlic bread on Monday, barbecued corn and meat casserole on Tuesday, pork goulash and green beans on Wednesday, scalloped turkey and cranberry salad on Thursday, and salmon loaf with sides on Friday. Each day includes bread, butter, fruit, and milk.
The French Club held a Monday gathering with a white elephant exchange. Members redirected their 50 cent gift money to the Hungarian Relief Fund and enjoyed refreshments hosted by Jane Phillips, Carolyn Troiano, Sibyl Wentling, and Kay Saunders.
The F H A Club met December 10 in the auditorium with acting president Sally Gardner leading. Members sang the F H A prayer and discussed card distribution, Christmas caroling, a school dance, and a charity gift. Y Teens opened at 7 pm with Sara Romig presiding and Helen Long giving a gift wrapping talk.
State Auditor James A. Rhodes reports Ohio inheritance taxes reached a new high of $15,931,115 for the year, surpassing the 1954 peak. About half funded local districts, the other half to the state after small statutory fees. The 1956 total exceeds 1955 by $3,348,484. Local county figures include Wyandot 42635.71, Crawford 74195.76, Hancock 77252.62, Hardin 2689.14, Seneca 99969.04.
A survey shows both spouses handle savings in 59 percent of families while the wife leads in 25 percent and the husband in 15 percent. In high income homes the husband saves more. in middle income families the wife drives saving efforts.
The Creeger Implement Co will be closed Saturday afternoons and evenings through December January and February.
Santa Claus visits the Carey Theatre in Wyandot County on Saturday December 22 with a free two hour all cartoon show for children up to seventh grade starting at 1 pm and shops for small kids from 1 30 to 2 30 pm. In Upper Sandusky the Star Theatre show runs 2 pm to 4 pm with Elks escorts and Santa gifts at the Elks Home afterward.
A Carey restaurant owner risked a broken window to reinforce a door trap causing a deputy to become stuck mid trap. He escaped with missing trousers and borrowed an apron worn backward as he walked toward his car. Donations for a new seat are invited at the Snack Bar or with Constable Kenneth Maenle.

Institutes meet in local school auditoriums with Carey officers led by President Dale Thomas and officers Yeoman Heck Pratt and hosts Mr and Mrs Delmar Grubel.
Gerald Fletcher 17 and Willard Frasure 16, both of Carey, were taken Monday to the Boys Industrial School at Lancaster by Wyandot County sheriffs department. They received indeterminate sentences for their parts in a recent series of thefts.
Mr and Mrs Samuel McChesney III moved their new trailer house from his mother's Crawford home to Marion on Saturday. McChesney has worked for Fairfield Engineering Co for the past year.
Beginning Friday December 14 stores in Carey will be open every night until Christmas Eve at 6 p m.
Carey High School presents a Sunday concert at 2 30 p m in the High School Auditorium featuring the instrumental and vocal departments. The program includes the High School Band Junior Choir High School Choir Senior Girls Ensemble Girls Glee Club and accompanying soloists Sibyl Wentling Velda Cole and Nancy Phillips. The varied selections cover Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer Messiah Winter Wonderland Santa Claus Is Comin to Town Jingle Bells The Twelve Days of Christmas Christmas Hymn Angels We Have Heard on High and more.
Charles J. Schwemley served as a delegate from Carey Exempted Village Schools to the 109th annual Ohio Education Association convention at the Sheraton Gibson Hotel in Cincinnati from Thursday evening to Saturday noon. Also attending were Mrs. Lawrence Harmon of Upper Sandusky schools and Miss Mary Tuttle of Sycamore, Wyandot county.
Two traffic violators appeared before Police Justice Clyde Jenkins with fines and costs assessed. Raymond Swankhouse of Ottawa paid 50 fine and 4.60 costs for a turn signal violation. Kenneth Stroub of Marion was fined 25 plus 8.60 costs for reckless operation. Billy Walker of Cadillac Michigan had 25 bond forfeited for speeding, and Maurice Fox of Marion had 20 bond forfeited for speeding.
Starting Monday December 17 through December 22 the stamp window stays open until 8 pm. On Sundays December 16 and December 23 the window opens 12 noon to 3 pm and mail will be delivered. Collections from street letter boxes occur around 1 pm on those Sundays.
Wyandot County Korean War veterans totaling 410 may receive the Ohio bonus. The maximum is 400 dollars, paid 10 dollars a month stateside and 15 dollars overseas for service between June 25 1950 and July 19 1953. A governor appointed commission will set up an office and staff to process applications before distribution.
The Carey Blue Devils defeated New Bloomington 76 to 37 on Tuesday. Jerry Orians led with 20 points while Dennis White added 19. Carey controlled the boards and held NB to 18 percent shooting in the first half. The JV reserve game stayed tight, with Roger Messmer scoring 18 for the reserves. Dennis White later clinched a 52 50 win at Harpster with two free throws.
In the weekly mixed doubles bowling event at Carey Recreation Alleys, M Boes and E Ulrich won first prize while K Yingling and B Slike took second. Team scores included M Boes and E Ulrich 1232 and K Yingling and B Shke 1138 among others.
Dr. Loren Pace named chairman of the Ohio State Optometric Association committee on Health Care Trends. Association president Dr. Otey F. Peters announces. Pace was also re elected secretary of the Northeastern Optometric Association Zone 12.
The Carey Exempted Village Board of Education accepted the resignations of Luther Ritter and Billy Ward as bus drivers. Donald Wickiser and Clifford Wise were approved to fill those positions. The board also adopted rules for building use including no smoking no alcohol no food or drink in the auditorium and that facilities remain available with compliance. The Peoples Bank Co. was accepted as the official depository for school funds.
Palm Leaf Rebekah Lodge No. 656 elected Mrs. Sarah Suber noble grand at IOOF hall on Tuesday. She succeeds Mrs. Clayton Twining and will lead an officers team including Vice-grand Mrs. Victor Dick and recording secretary Mrs. Dennis DeVene. A Christmas party followed with gifts and Santa for children.
Statewide quarterly disbursement of school foundation funds exceeds 44 million dollars the largest yet. The first week of December payments total 44, with 31,744,534.05 to districts and 803,969.12 to county boards, plus retirement and depreciation allocations. Local districts under county systems receive 15,531,903.67. city districts 13,680,023.50. exempted village districts 2,532,606.88.
Don R. Grimes, president of the Independent Grocers' Alliance, announced a national campaign at the IA wholesalers meeting. He cited that between 1948 and 1954 about 115000 food stores closed nationwide, with nine out of ten being small corner shops.
Dr Herman K Hellestein of Western Reserve University School of Medicine reports housewives burn three to five calories per minute, more than most men on their jobs except foundry and dock work, farmers, and material handling.
The trustees of Crawford Township will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Municipal building to discuss local matters.
