School Supply List for 1945 Start

Announce a detailed grade by grade list of required workbooks and supplies for all grades from One to Ten. It notes prices for various workbooks and art and writing materials and invites buyers to visit the high school building on Monday evening September 3 from 7 to 9 to purchase before school opens Tuesday September 4 1945.

High School Notes On Schedule Help And Registration

Principal I. Ey Mulholland will be in the high school office through noon on Thursday and Friday August 30 and 31 to help pupils arrange next year schedules. All returning, changed, and new pupils should attend. Those who did not register last May must register before school opens. Bring this schedule on the first day, September 4, and note class outlines and unit requirements for grades 10 11 and 12.

Ring Found Inside Carrot Identifies Civil War Soldier

Mrs. Alex Stewart found a silver ring inside a carrot given to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Newhard. Engraved with Fr. H. Laughlin, 187th O. V.I., Feb. 8, 1865, the ring belongs to Francis H. Laughlin who died at 16 serving the Union in Frederick town Maryland. He was born May 5, 1849. His niece is Mrs. Paul Powell. E. G. Laughlin once lived on the Stewart property.

Local WW2 Hero Receives Honorable Discharge at Camp Atterbury

Cpl Joseph Derr of Co O 393rd Inf was honorably discharged at Camp Atterbury Indiana on August 4 after being wounded in Germany on April 6 1945. He returned to the United States June 11 and was treated at Kennedy General Hospital Memphis Tennessee before final discharge.

United Brethren Conference Set for Findlay Session

Pastor Staats Accepts Call at Carey Church of God

Rev. H. W. Staats of Cincinnati has accepted a call as pastor of the Church of God in Carey. He succeeds Rev. Le Roy A. Hay who moved to Pennsylvania. The Staatses reside with Mrs. Beulah Salyer on S Patterson street.

Evangelical Conference Opens in Upper Sandusky

The Ohio Conference of the Evangelical church began Wednesday at Trinity Evangelical Church Upper Sandusky with lay delegate Russell Phillips and Rev. B L Lee. Proclamation Sent To 22 Suspected Gambling Spots

Marshal Adolph Kirchner said 22 locations in Upper Sandusky received copies of a proclamation urging removal of gambling devices. The document, prepared by Mayor John W. Milligan and Prosecuting Attorney Russell C. Price, quoted Gov. Lausche and outlined penalties for displaying gambling devices.

Charles Kessler Discharged After 104 Points At Indian Town Gap

Charles Kessler, son of Mr and Mrs John Kessler east of Carey, was discharged from the army at Indian Town Gap Pa after nearly four years of service and 35 months overseas with the 6th army in Germany. He was on the first boat to land troops in the African invasion. his ship was sunk by an aerial torpedo after the landings. He earned a pre Pearl Harbor ribbon, a European Theater ribbon, a good conduct badge and six battle stars for Africa Italy and Germany. He could not locate his brother Pfc Bernard Kessler with the 3rd army. His unit lost clothing and equipment and wore English uniforms for two weeks until replacement gear arrived.

Carey schools add two teachers as staff completes

Superintendent G A Hartman announces the regular teaching staff is complete with two new hires Théo Dickey of Findlay and Helen A Teter of Columbus. Dickey, a Findlay College graduate, will teach mathematics and English after government work in Detroit. Teter, Otterbein College graduate, will teach general science and social studies. Thom of South Vienna Recovers After Jaw Surgery

Charles Thom of South Vienna 10 miles south of Springfield visited relatives here and in Fostoria over the weekend. A welder on the New York Central Lines he had sold his welding shop due to ill health. Four months ago in Cincinnati he underwent operation to remove part of his left jaw bone infected by sinus trouble. He had two prior operations but is much improved and able to work again.

Arlington Elevator Burns in Destructive Sunday Fire

At 5 00 o clock Sunday afternoon the grain elevator and mill feed structure of the Farm Service Center at Arlington were destroyed by fire. Loss estimated at not less than 25000 dollars. Ralph S Karcher Receives Honorable Army Discharge

Cpl Ralph S Karcher was honorably discharged from the U S Army at Camp Atterbury Indiana after 28 months overseas. He entered service April 16 1942 and earned 96 points before his return home Tuesday morning.

Youth Killed Near Carey In Route 49 Crash

Louis Elwood Newman a 19 year old hitchhiker from Baltimore was killed when a southbound semi trailer struck a car carrying Gerald Boes and his brother Eugene near Carey Ohio. Cox the driver of the truck was fined for reckless operation. Newman’s body was taken to Goff funeral home and funeral services set for Wheelersburg.

SGT BRUCE LUZADER HOME ON 45 DAY FURLough

T/Sgt Arden Bruce Luzader arrived home Saturday from Camp Atterbury Indiana on a 45 day furlough. He served 38 months in the South Pacific with a cannon company of the 19th Infantry and has been in the U S Army 41 months. He was wounded May 23 1945 on Mindanao Island Philippines and has Silver Star and Purple Heart decorations. After furlough he will return to Camp Atterbury for reassignment. He is a son of Mr and Mrs Warren Luzader of Frederick Street.

Keckler Family Runs Crawford County Locker Plant

Charles Keckler and his wife operate a 42 unit locker plant on their 4 acre Bucyrus area farm 344 miles west of Bucyrus. They also run a greenhouse blacksmith shop and raise poultry and garden stock. The plant is Crawford county’s first and serves a 10 mile radius. The former owner who built it four years ago granted permission for a Bucyrus plant.
