Bishop Karl J. Alter of Toledo and Rev Dunstan McDermid led the closing novena rites at the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation. Services spanned Tuesday through Wednesday with multilingual confessions and blessings with the relics, enrollment in the Confraternity, and processions to the shrine park.
Mrs. Arthur Hollinger and her sons visited Carey after a July 16 fire partly destroying their Beach City home. The blaze started in the basement from a kerosene heater at 5 am, forcing a narrow escape as the floor above collapsed. The family will stay in Carey until repairs are finished. Alice Bogen of Glendale visiting kin in Carey and with Mrs. Smith.
J F Dible Wallace J Dible and Harry J Dible bought the Hoff block at the corner of Vance and South streets from the heirs of the late Charles D Hoff for 310000. Ground floor rooms will serve as a shop and storage for J F Dible plumbing and sheet metal work. The J F Dible office and display room stay on E Findlay street.
Ray F. Williams, field supervisor of the emergency crop and feed loan office, will be in the courthouse assembly room in Upper Sandusky from 11 to 12 on Tuesday, August 21, 1945, to accept loan applications for planting self crops or purchasing livestock feed. Farmers needing financing should attend.
Art employees of the National Lime and Stone Co are invited to a Wednesday evening meeting on August 22 at 8 o clock in the Eagles hall. M. E. Holstein, business representative of the International Union of Operating Engineers, calls it a friendly get to gether and all employees are invited.
Seneca county No. 2 board at Fostoria sent 26 men to Ft Hayes for pre induction exams last Thursday. Names include Harold Heminger Vanlue William M Jessup Cletus Trausch Carey Richard K Albert McCutchenville.
The Eagles invite families for Saturday rounds and square dancing from nine to twelve with Walter Ball calling. Music by the Victory Boosters promises a pleasant evening hosted by Bo Mbek, secretary.
The war ended with Japan's unconditional surrender announced Tuesday night. Allied leaders accepted Japan's surrender and General Douglas MacArthur named supreme Allied commander. President Truman proclaimed August 15 and 16 as holidays for government workers as celebrations began nationwide. In Carey, a wild turnout greeted the news with horns bells and guns. The celebration dampened by a heavy rain at 8:30 PM.

The 37th Savidge Burson reunion gathers August 19 at Wyandot county fairgrounds Upper Sandusky led by Foster W Savidge. Newcomer reunion on August 20 at Fostoria Park Fostoria chaired by Paul S Newcomer with Robert Newcomer and Samuel Newcomer. The 41st Hilée Putnam reunion on August 25 at Carey Park led by Bert Schubert Clarence Deidrick and Opal Starr. The 29th Krabill reunion on September 2 at Riverside Park Findlay with Harvey Newcomer Perry Beard and Mrs Walter Roynon.
Gene Newell a 16 year old right handed pitcher from Carey leaves today for Chicago to try out for 10 days at the Cubs summer training camp. He will stay as a guest of Cubs management. Gene is the son of Mr and Mrs Gail Newell of Carey.
Last Thursday at about 9 30 p m a small box of dynamite stored in a shed on Mrs A D Lerner s farm northeast of Carey exploded tearing the wooden box to pieces The box had stood there over 20 years Smoke was seen before the blast and flames followed Michael and Andy Fec k of Frenchtown saw the fire and alerted Herbert Lenner The three men carried water to extinguish the fire and no other damage occurred The Carey fire department arrived after the blaze was out
In Columbus Dil lon Myer WRA chief reported over 3,000 formerly interned Japanese in Ohio have found work. He noted the Center closings set for December 15 with Tule Lake remaining, and that more than 100,000 evacuated Nisei nationwide will be relocated by year end.

Mercy hospital in Tiffin welcomed a 7 pound 2 ounce son for Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Mathias Jr. on Friday evening. A 7 pound daughter named Ruth Ann was born to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Walter near Carey on Sunday evening. Findlay hospital saw a son named Richard Earl born Tuesday to S/Sgt. and Mrs. Earl Buckingham of W Brown Avenue. the mother is Dorothy Jane Mursholand and the father serves in France.
Radio listeners heard Wednesday that gas rationing and the rationing of canned fruits and vegetables have been discontinued effective immediately.
Carey fire department responded Tuesday afternoon to a grass fire along the seminary field bordering Lakeland pond. The blaze started in the grass and was reported to be spreading. Firefighters contained the flames with routine suppression efforts.
Memorial services for Richard Lewis McKinnon a pharmacist's mate third class U S N will be held at Our Lady of Consolation Church Friday at 9 30 a m He died October 24 1944 off China while a Japanese prisoner of war captured at Corregidor May 6 1942 held on the Philippine Islands until October 11 1944 He was aboard a Japanese freighter torpedoed and sunk His parents Ira and Mrs McKinnon of Carey Ohio were notified of his death June 23 by the Navy Department in Washington He was 26 joining the Navy March 5 1940 and had served in Shanghai before the Philippines.
Supt. G A Hartman announces C G Laird as principal of the Col Crawford building succeeding Charles Hall who resigned. Laird will also teach mathematics and science in the 6th grade and has 22 years teaching experience. He and his wife reside on S Patterson street with two daughters Peggy and Patsy.
The Servicemen's Wives' Club Carey Ohio extends to the board of public affairs a vote of thanks for improving Carey park for children. They commend the wading pool care, age limit, weekday supervision, new sand pile, and ongoing upkeep and repairs, expressing pride in the park and support for the board.
F N Reister of Tiffin is hired as Carey High School coach and chemistry teacher replacing Cloyce Wentling who resigns to join Humolite Corp. Reister will meet football players August 21 at 9 30 a m to register. He recently did graduate work at Ohio State University and previously coached and taught science in Wakeman. The Reister family will live at 411 East Findlay Street in Carey.

At the Carey Kiwanis regular meeting held at Water Works Park members and guests shared a picnic supper. Dr. Paul R. Clouser of Middletown Pa spoke on South Pacific living conditions and scenery. New member Coy Reynolds was welcomed as Seiberling Rubber. Capt Harold Krout, stationed in Texas, offered remarks.
Richard Brown returned home Sunday after 22 months with the 5th Air Force in the South Pacific and will report for duty in San Antonio Texas. Corporal Vincent Brown arrived August 6 from Germany where he had served since February with Btry A 764th FA Bn and will report for duty at Camy Hood Texas.

The Junior Girls class of the Methodist Sunday school will hold a potluck picnic at Waterworks park on Wednesday evening August 22 at 6 15. Bring a covered dish table service and sandwiches. Skating will follow.
The Servicemen's Wives' club will host a social gathering after V-3 Day services in local churches. The event will be held in the Legion hall on S. Vance Street.
