Burks Family Returns From Alaska Adventure
The Donald Burks family from east of Carey completed a 10,036 mile trip to Fairbanks and Valdez Alaska, traveling 2,600 miles round trip on the Alcan Highway. They left July 1 in a camp ready Chevrolet Vanette and visited many states and provinces, noting varied temperatures and high prices, with hospitality from Canadians and visits in Renton Yellowstone and Boulder. They returned August 6 to Ohio with photos and memories of the journey.

Missionaries Prepare for Africa Departure in Carey
Departing for Africa Rev Fr Aloysius Jacoby son of Mr and Mrs John Jacoby of 147 S Lake Street will receive his Mission cross Thursday evening August 27 at 7 30 in Shrine Church of Our Lady of Consolation Carey. Very Rev Fr Basil Heiser will preside and present the cross. The ceremonies are open to the public with Friars Choir performing. A reception follows in the Parish Hall on West Street. He sails from New York on September 7 or 8, accompanied by Rt Rev Monsignor Rupert Hillerich and Rev Fr Simon Sauer both bound for Northern Rhodesia Africa. Hillerich formerly taught at Our Lady of Carey Seminary and has just been named Prefect Apostolic of the new Mission territory in Northern Rhodesia. Investiture of Hillerich will be in Louisville August 30. Sauer will also receive his Mission cross in Louisville. The Conventual Franciscans of the OLD Province have four priests and four brothers in the Northern Rhodesian Mission.
