Schools Open September 8 for 1936 37 term

The 1936 37 school year begins September 8 with a teachers meeting set for September 5 at 2 PM in the high school. Registration for high school pupils runs all week before opening, aided by several faculty members. Public book sales start August 24 with buyback of usable second hand titles and additions to free text lists. Non permanent materials must be purchased by pupils. The board notes high care of loaned books last year. List of required books and supplies follows including workbooks, pads, pencils, and various readers and dictionaries.

Hosack Buys Phelps Block in Carey Wyandot County

Cy Hosack owner of the Chevrolet agency in Carey bought the Phelps building on E Findlay Street near the Big Four railroad. The site, long used by Chesebrough's garage and later enlarged, will house Hosack's larger Chevrolet office as he moves from Garey. The lot has a 35 by 110 foot footprint with rear 50 by 30 foot addition.

Tontogany Beats Semi-Pros In High-Scoring Sunday Game

The Ostego Chiefs of Tontogany improved to 17-1-1 with a win over Donelson's Semi-Pros Sunday. Carey hit home runs and both teams combined for multiple errors as Tontogany outslugged the visitors 12-? with a flurry of runs and key plays across the early innings.

Frazier Rubber Adds 50x80 Foot Plant Extension

The Frazier Rubber Products corporation builds a 50 by 80 foot concrete block addition at its Carey plant. The expansion includes a hydraulic press and a mixing mill nearly doubling production. Dale Frazier, superintendent, directs the up-to-date operation moved from Sebring Ohio two years ago. Snyder Lumber Co holds the contract for the new addition.

Catholic Ladies of Columbia Exchange Insurance Policies

A representative will be at the home of Mrs H L Pahl on Clay Street on August 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to exchange old insurance policies for new ones with no extra charge. New members will receive policies without medical exam or initiation fees. A social committee for the C S of C meeting next Monday evening includes Miss Frances Riester and several named members.

Pilgrimage to Shrine Draws Large Crowds and Train Specials

The annual August pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation began last Saturday and runs through next Sunday with special services on August 14 15 and 16. Bishop Karl Alter will celebrate a public reception on Sunday August 16. Multiple special trains from Cleveland Toledo Youngstown Indianapolis Detroit and other points will carry pilgrims to Carey and nearby sites for weekend events.

Location of Carey’s first schoolhouse revealed

A community inquiry in The Carey Times uncovers the site of Carey’s first log schoolhouse behind the Newhard block on E Findlay. The building served during town layout and years after, with later uses including a cooperage. Other early schools stood at Findlay West, and E South streets.

Adult Education Classes Reg Retooled with Free Evening Sessions

Registrations for adult education classes under the emergency education program will be received next Monday afternoon in Room 12 at the high school. Topics include hobbies, adolescents, young mothers, everyday civics, modern American literature and poetry, handicraft, science, geography, and toys. Classes meet for an hour and run three sessions daily with lectures and round table discussions. The courses are free to all.
