Railroads set 14 year passenger death free record

The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway along with Boston and Albany and Santa Fe achieved 14 years of passenger travel without a fatality. C and O operated 6,881,615,000 passenger miles without a passenger killed in a train accident. The National Safety Council awarded C and O a certificate of special commendation.

Funeral held for Mrs. Josephine Schira at St Joseph’s

Mr and Mrs F N Schira and relatives attended the funeral of Mrs Josephine Schira of Lakewood at St Joseph’s church Tiffin. Interment followed in the mausoleum at St Joseph’s cemetery. She was sister in law to John Schira and aunt to the others named.

Pilgrims to Carey Train Groups From Detroit and Local Ports

Sunday August 16 trains from Akron Barberton and Detroit carry pilgrims to Carey. The Baltimore Ohio runs at 12 20 a m and 12 35 a m, arriving Carey about 6 00 am. Pere Marquette brings Detroit parish pilgrims on a 10 00 am to Carey 4 40 pm schedule. Round trips cost 3.25 to 3.50 with half fare for children.

Picnic Brings Scouts and Stewards Joyful Meadow Brook Day

On Tuesday August 4 a joint outing of Boy Scout Troop No 3 and Our Lady of Consolation church servers met at Meadow Brook Park Bascom. Thirty six attended with Father Paul Father Edwin and Scoutmaster Henry Pieraccini. Activities included salutes games and songs followed by two base ball games and swimming. A noon feast satisfied the hungry group and a 7 pm weiner and corn roast capped the day as they returned at about 8 30.

Mrs L S Stoll's Mother Dies Near Ann Arbor

Mrs Tracy Johnson of north of town reports the death of her mother aged 77 at her home near Ann Arbor Monday night. Former Carey resident, she left Carey about 20 years ago. Daughters include Mrs Frank Russell Arcadia Mrs Chas Wentz Kirby and Mrs John Hetzel Nevada. Mr Johnson and son Carl attended yesterday's funeral in Ann Arbor. Mrs Johnson could not attend due to illness.

Combined Service at Memorial Evangelical Church Sunday

Combined services will be held at Memorial Evangelical Church with Sunday school from 9 30 to 10 30. Activities include piano prelude, hymns, scripture lesson, prayers, solo and quartet selections, history and readings, and a sermon by Dr. Caldwell. Benediction concludes the program.

Death of James Anderson of Sidney at age seven percent

James Anderson of Sidney died Tuesday of last week at his home from heart trouble and complications. A former Carey resident, he moved to Sidney about 40 years ago. Survived by wife, five children and twenty two grandchildren, he leaves siblings Mrs C D Smith Miss Ella Anderson and Dr F E Anderson. Funeral was held at the home last Thursday with interment in Sidney cemetery. Attending were C D Smith Miss Ella Anderson and Dr F E Anderson.

Turnbell Cole Couple Return From Niagara Wedding Trip

Mr and Mrs Cecil Turnbell came home Monday from their wedding trip to Niagara Falls. Their marriage was solemnized Tuesday July 28 at the First Presbyterian church in Toledo by Rev Rowsey. The bride, formerly Miss Ruth Cole, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Forest Cole. The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs Nelson Turnbell. They will reside with the groom's parents on North Street for the present.

Two Die in Grade Crossing Accident Near Alvada

Two men, C A Herbert age 56 of Alvada and Daniel J. Wickerham of Fostoria, were killed when a Chesapeake and Ohio freight collided with their Ford coupe at a grade crossing on Herbert road near Alvada. Wickerham died after being taken to Carey on the train caboose. Herbert’s funeral services are set at St John’s Evangelical church and burial in the New Riegel area.

Lightning destroys barn and kills livestock near town

Lightning struck a barn owned by Miss Lucy Laughlin east of town during a Saturday storm tearing two roof holes. One horse died and another was knocked down and blinded. Five sheep on the Frank Ogg farm were killed. Firefighters were called but no blaze occurred. A sheep on John Kessler's farm near Adriano was also struck.
