Carey Primary Approves City Manager Plan Vote Narrowly Passes

In Carey on Tuesday the city manager form of government was approved by 216 to 186 in a low turnout. Republican candidates won key races with Bachar mayor and Frazier losing by four votes for clerk. Democratic nominees ran unopposed for several posts.

Captain Harold Krout Completes Instrument Pilot Training

Capt Harold B Krout son of Mr and Mrs Carl Krout of Carey Ohio has finished the post graduate course in instrument pilot training at Wubbock Army Air Field Texas and returns to Monroe Louisiana to train fliers in all weather instrument flying He completed 22 missions as a B 25 pilot with the 11th Air Force earning the Air Medal and one battle star.

Local 4-H Girls Can Peaches for School Cafeteria

Bronze Star Awarded to Gerald L. Stoll for Heroic Action

Gerald L. Stoll, son of Mr and Mrs Allen Stoll of East Findlay Street, received the Bronze Star Medal for heroic action on February 13 1945 in Germany. As lead scout of an assault squad he seized a BAR and opened fire, killing a sentry and forcing enemies to close a pillbox aperture. Stoll entered service in Ohio in 1942 and served in England Belgium France and Germany with Company I 393rd Infantry 99th Division.

Memorial Evangelical Church to Host Ohio Conference Delegates

Missing in France Robert Tong 24

Robert Tong 24 son of Mr and Mrs Hobart Tong of West street is reported missing in France according to a war department letter to his wife in Marion. The 332nd Engineer Regiment member was in Germany and later Belgium and France. No details given beyond searches of hospitals and camps. His brother Pvt Clarence Tong died in Germany February 25 1945.

Pvt Bernard Jacques wounded in France is discharged. Pvt Charles Jacques returns home from Camp Atterbury on 52 day furlough before a Miami Beach assignment. Sgt John Jacques serves with military police in Newfoundland and has a 7 month old son. S/Sgt Ralph Eugene Jacques in Philippines with 85 points and nearing discharge.

Home After 31 Months in the Aleutians

Mr and Mrs P B Emerine received a 1030 PM telephone call Monday from their son S Sgt Herman Emerine in Minneapolis after a plane flight from the Aleutians. He had been stationed on Attu Island 31 months with the post headquarters company and was due home in Carey on furlough. His wife and son William live in Marion.

Sgt Lester Smiley Returns on 30 Day Home Visit

T/Sgt Lester Smiley arrived Sunday in Garey from Camp Atterbury Indiana after duty in the Philippine Islands. He will spend thirty days with his parents on S Patterson Street before returning to Camp Atterbury for reassignment. Smiley served 147 months in the South Pacific with the 13th Bomber Group.

Bronze Star Awarded for Heroic Action in Italy

Private First Class Robert D. Nye, Infantry U S Army, 35554288, earned the Bronze Star for heroic achievement on 19 September 1944 near Scarperia Italy. Nye and a partner guided artillery fire under heavy fire to assist in repelling the enemy and securing hill positions. Nye died in November 1944. son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Nye of Carey, Ohio. widow Mrs. Carl Baughman of Bellefontaine.

Humolite Plant Destroyed by Fire Near Carey

The Humolite plant located about 2 miles north of Carey was destroyed Monday at 4 15 pm by a fast moving fire. The blaze started near the roof and smokestack near the furnace. Carey's fire department arrived but could not save the building. The plant, under construction for about a year, had just begun operating. Superintendent Cloyce Wentling led the site. Officials say the loss is insured and the plant will be rebuilt if priorities for materials are obtained.

Lt. Mary Ruth Spackey A N C of Carey Ohio was named the most outstanding Army nurse at Finney General Hospital Thomasville Ga She entered service June 14 1943 and served in surgery rising to assistant chief nurse of surgery at the 2600 bed facility On Thanksgiving Day 1943 she married Lt William Froelich Jr of Sayner Wisconsin who is director of physical training at the same hospital She was promoted to first lieutenant on February 17 1945 From the commendation to Lt. Army discharge for T/4 John Starkey from Camp Atterbury

T/4 John Starkey aged 24 has been discharged from the US Army with 98 points. He enlisted in May 1941 and served 38 months in the South Pacific with an infantry regiment of the 35th division, traveling over 25 000 miles in the area. He is the son of Mrs. John Laird of S Patterson street, Carey.
