Carey’s band under Mr. Lewis Hawk competes at the North Central Band Auditions at Bucyrus High School on Saturday April 17. Bands perform Two Moods Overture by Grundman, Esprit de Corps by Skeat, and Hosts of Freedom March for warm up. three judges rate by class. Members will be assigned to Bucyrus churches for luncheon.
Peggy Laird won first, Samuel McChesney Mr second, and Donna Ruffing third in Carey’s district Poetry Reading contest held Tuesday before a high school assembly. Twenty contestants competed. Peggy read Dulce et Decorum Est, Samuel To a Louse, and Donna Little Boy Blue.
The Findlay Area Lutheran Men's League will hold a banquet at Christ Lutheran Church on Tuesday April 27 at 7 pm with about 200 Lutheran men expected. William S Hoare of Columbus will speak as treasurer of the American Lutheran Brotherhood of Ohio.
Joych Snyder of Carey and Wittenberg freshman has been elected to Alpha Lambda Delta the national freshman women's honorary. She must maintain a 35 average or better for one semester. Wittenberg uses a 400 point grading system and the 35 threshold reflects the local scale.
City council members urge Ohio Department of Highways to repair N County Line street north of Jackson Street. Fostoria requested a matched fund fix but the resolution arrived too late for the 1948 agenda.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship will sponsor a bake sale on Saturday April 24 at Dibles plumbing shop. Contributions can be arranged by calling Joyce Jenkins at 19 or Kaye Hall at X-282. Proceeds benefit the Fellowship Lakeside fund.
A 70 pound gon was brought to Mr and Mrs Larry Gherman of North Vance Street on Friday morning at 12 01. The newborn was named Larry Ray.
First Lt Donald Eugene Hendricks 23 of Vanlue is buried after dying March 10 1945 on Iwo Jima. Posthumous Silver Star cites conspicuous gallantry directing a tank platoon under heavy fire. He attended Vanlue High School and Bowling Green State University before joining the Marine Corps. He is survived by parents a sister a brother and other relatives.
Evangelistic meetings led by Rev E J Haldeman of Edison begin Monday April 12 at Beech Grove E U B church near Carey and continue through April 25. Services are nightly except Saturday with special music. Rev Don B Bennett of Wharton is the church pastor and the public is invited.
The Village of Carey via Ordinance No 10 requires all dogs to be kept tied up and restricts dogs from running at large. Violations will be prosecuted. Henry Pieracini, Chief of Police.
Miss Margaret Haferd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Haferd, expects to arrive in the United States around May 1 after five and a half years as a foreign staff assistant with the American Red Cross in Europe. She worked mainly in Munich and Nuremberg with stints in England and France and is a Carey High School and St. Mary of the Springs College alumna, later earning an MA and Library Science degree from Western Reserve University.
The Carey Kiwanis reports two weeks of engaging programs from local school talent. April 5 the vocational guidance staff explained methods and demonstrated work, while April 12 Miss Shook led a demonstration on proper dress care followed by a one act play from the public speaking department.
Memorial E U B Church notes record new members Dr C R Conley and Mrs Conley. Baptisms included David Lee Mrs Leonard Kennerley Miss Jean Van Horn and Dr Conley. Pastor attended the annual Ohio Conference pastors retreat at Trinity Church in Upper Sandusky on Monday and Tuesday.
The American Legion invites ex service men to join a softball gathering at the rubber plant field Friday night April 16. Meet with manager Bob Strahm at 6 15 PM to get warmed up and boost turnout. New uniforms have been ordered and will arrive for league games.
The Mary-Martha class of Christ Lutheran Sunday school will hold a rummage sale on Wednesday April 21 in the church basement. Please bring materials by Tuesday noon and all members able to help Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday are asked to be present.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Karcher and children Billy Harold and Donna moved from the Arnold Lee farm two miles southwest of Vanlue to a 270 acre farm seven miles north of Unpe Sandusky on Route 53. The farm is owned by Mr William Karcher of Upper Sandusky.
Samuel McChesney III son of Mr and Mrs S W McChesney received word from Culver Military Academy on Monday that he has been awarded a $100 scholarship toward the 1948 term of summer school He belongs to the naval school band and will graduate this summer.
Lutheran Sunday school hosts a Mary-Martha Class social on Monday evening April 19. Mrs Pharos Schmuck chairs with hostesses Mrs T D Romig Mrs Russell Ward Mrs Dale Frazier and Mrs Ruby Criger assisting.
The Fortnightly Club sponsors a Youth Center for Carey’s Freshman through Senior youths. Located in the municipal building, it will run Tuesdays Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 to 10 pm starting April 20. Don Bates is hired to supervise with parent and youth cooperation encouraged. Junior High students will have one special night monthly.
An announcement seeks support for a Seneca County cancer clinic under the Seneca County Medical Society during April designated as Cancer Control Month. Funds stay half locally, half nationally, with officials including Paul B. Parkin and A E Zoller leading the effort and a committee of doctors and residents guiding the drive.
Mr and Mrs Clyde Lynn bought two Brayton street lots from William Hamm and W R May. Franklin Roberts purchased an eight acre tract west of Carey from Owen Ashbaugh and will relocate soon. Both deals were brokered by John Risner. Ashbaugh bought the Risner property at 130 E Brown Avenue, currently occupied by Mr and Mrs Frederick Kenepp.
East ern Star Crawford chapter will be inspected Friday evening by Mrs Florence Kindinger deputy grand matron of Ohio. A dinner at Trubey's will precede the meeting for all Crawford chapter members and inspecting officers.
Miss Virginia Mitten and Robert W Vaughn of Carey are named on Ohio State University’s honor roll in the College of Commerce and Administration for winter quarter, with averages of 3.25 or higher.
Jack Walters was taken to Mercy hospital in Tiffin on Friday afternoon and underwent amputation of his left leg Wednesday at 11 o clock due to gangrene from a diabetic condition. The report notes the procedure was necessary because of the infection.
The second annual report of the city manager for 1947 has been mailed to Carey residents. Those who did not receive a copy may obtain one at the clerk's office.

To Show Pictures Dick Gallagher will be in Carey April 22 1948 to show pictures of the Cleveland Browns football games to the Moose members and their friends. The pictures will be shown at 830 p m All Moose are urged to attend and bring their friends who may wish to see these pictures. A fish fry will follow the show Gallagher is the newest member of the Browns coaching staff. He replaces Red Conkright as tutor of the team s wingmen.
Seed for the 1948 corn crop will average somewhat under size and poorly filled. G H Springfield, agronomist for the USDA and Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station at Wooster, says cold weather halted growth before maturity. The seed remains usable to produce a bumper crop if growing conditions improve.
The Carey Band Mothers hold a party Friday evening April 23 at 8 o clock in the high school. Games bands and dancing provide entertainment for junior and senior band members and their parents. None of the donated funds to the band is used for this event.
The Carey public schools invite all eligible preschool pupils to visit Friday April 30 at the Colonel Crawford building or the West building at 1 90 oclock to see what school is like and prepare for next year.
A son was born February 27 at Springfield City Hospital to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Harner of Springfield. The baby named Lary Wayne is the child of the Harner couple. Mrs Harner is Laura Phillips, daughter of Mr and Mrs James C Phillips of WeCutchenville.
The Carey WCTU will meet Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Gilland Sisters home on S Patterson street. After the meeting, members will sew for the blind veterans' home in Dayton.
The WBA will hold a local review Friday April 16 at 8 15 o clock in the Moose hall. All officers and members are urged to be present.
A surplus food shipment for Seneca county schools arrived from Toledo last Tuesday and was distributed. It included dried peaches prunes raisins canned juice American cheese and fresh pears. The pears were in doubtful condition from refrigeration thawing and refreezing with some boxes showing original France shipment marks.
Mr and Mrs Dr Fetters and daughter Karen Lee attended a Toledo Civic Auditorium dog show with Karen Lee entering Royal Major, a Dalmatian owned by Mr and Mrs W W Clark of Carey. Royal Major won second prize in the kids' division and first prize in the Dalmatian show.
Dr H K Vam Buren attended the 75th annual Tri-State Medical association convention held Tuesday in Findlay at the high school auditorium. Noon luncheon speaker was Rep Forest A Harness of Washington DC, a lawyer and 5th Indiana district congressman, at the Matthews supper club.

Mr and Mrs James Gatchell plan to relocate from the Fred Kloepfer farm four miles southwest of Carey to the newly purchased house at 637 E Findlay Street formerly owned by Mr and Mrs Ralph Shontz. The move is slated for the latter part of this week or early next week.
