About thirty Milam County fishermen met May 16 in the district courtroom to discuss building a large county lake. Woodrow Lowe said interest is high though site location is undecided. If built the lake could include cabins and boat rentals to attract visitors and boost local activity.
Commencement exercises for Yee High School 1951 were held at the Athletic Field Tuesday night with Gloria Ann Junemann as valedictorian Lanelle Kuehl salutatorian and Maxine Schuetze winning third. Dr William C Finch gave the baccalaureate sermon on Sunday May 20 at 8 pm at the Athletic Field.
Final plans announced for Milam County Day to be held May 31 at the Blackland Experiment Station in Temple. Roy Wright, Cameron Chamber Agriculture Committee chairman, says livestock and crops committees sponsor the event with support from Milam County agricultural agencies and teachers. A new passenger vehicle will be used for the tour, which should appeal to farmers and businesspeople. About 200 attended last year. The tour starts at 1 p.m., with 12:15 p.m. pickup from Cameron courthouse for those needing a ride.
A Briary Public School meeting on May 21 discusses consolidating with Rosebud School. The May 26 election is to decide whether Briary and Rosebud should merge their districts. Francis Cox directs Yee High Choral Club as the crowd considers the proposition.
W. W. Lynch re-elected president at Dallas meeting as TP and L outlines capacity additions and ongoing construction to meet industrial demand. Two new vice presidents named Ed Speer and George Beams, both Dallas. W. G. Button elected assistant vice president.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Josephine E. Kirk 77 of Hearne at the First Baptist Church in Gause with Rev. R L Nolan presiding. Born June 25 1873 in Tennessee she lived in Cameron and raised seven children with husband Jim Kirk. Survivors include five sons two daughters two brothers and two sisters along with seventeen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Burial followed at the Gause Cemetery with Heartfield Funeral Home directing.
Ada Henderson School held promotion exercises on Tuesday May 22 at 2 PM in Yee High School Gymnasium announced by C L Canady. Mr. and Mrs. George Partee and their sons Dennis and Stanley enjoyed a sightseeing outing in San Antonio on Sunday.
Rev Arthur Michalka born 1927 in Cameron fourth of eight children to enter religious life. He will be ordained at St Marys Church Brenham by Bishop Louis Reichert on May 26 with assisant priest Rev Ernest Michalka. First Solemn Mass at St Monicas Church May 28 at 10 AM withArchpriest Rev George Duda and other ministers. St Monica's Parish to host dinner in Simon George Memorial Hall.
There will be a cemetery cleaning at Rice Street on Saturday May 26. Everyone is urged to come and bring a basket lunch.
At a Cameron City Council meeting a motion proposes placing the streets sewer water and recreation departments under Water Superintendent L W Smith with full control subject to council consent for policy changes. Purchases under 10 dollars require no bid, over 50 dollars require requisition and council approval, and monthly written reports to the council are required. The mayor questioned Mr Smiths qualifications and the motion, led by Alderman Perkins, faced opposition.
Ben F Baker 79 longtime Marlow resident died Monday May 21 at 7 30 PM after a period of illness. Born September 6 1871 in Magnolia Arkansas he moved to Texas as a child. Funeral at Rice Church Tuesday May 22 at 3 30 PM with Rev Joel Theile pape officiating burial in Rice Cemetery. Surviving are widow Ella Baker four sons Clyde Baker Henry Baker John Wesley Baker and John F Cochran plus seven grandchildren.
Milam County farmers report a late but generally healthy tomato crop with some early picks possible within a week to ten days. Weather and light insect pressure support a bumper yield if conditions stay favorable, with Robertson and Burleson counties also enjoying strong crops. The Tomato Labs and insecticide advances boost production and income in diversified farming.
James L. Coleman Jr son of Mr and Mrs Jarre Coleman of 3115 14th St Bay City will receive his medical degree from Texas University Medical Branch Galveston at 8 15 p m Friday June 1. He served in the Navy then pursued medical training and plans to practice in Bay City after internship at Philadelphia Naval Hospital.
Mr and Mrs W F Bill Sharp celebrate fifty years of marriage with an open house at their Cavilla residence on Saturday night May 26 1951 from eight to eleven oclock. Friends are invited.
