Zalesky Boosts Corn Yield With Winter Cover Crops
J L Zalesky of Pettibon Community raised corn yield from five bushels per acre in 1946 to fifty in 1953. Since 1945 he planted winter cover crops hubam clover or Austrian winter peas each year except 1952, improving soil structure. Legume roots broke a dense plow-pan, added nitrogen and organic matter, and kept soil moist and productive. Old corn stalks remain on the ground to shield soil from rain and sun, with all residues enriching the soil.
