Five House Members Shot in Unrest

Five members of the national House of Representatives were injured when three men and a woman fired about 20 to 25 shots in the spectator gallery during a Latin labor debate. Those reported hurt include George H. Fallon Maryland Ben F Jensen Iowa Rep Bently Michigan Clifford Davis Tennessee and Kenneth Roberts Alabama. One member, shot through the chest, was in serious condition.

Yoe High Track Opens Season With Cameron Relays Soon

Yoe High begins full time track workouts after basketball and boxing season with 28 boys reporting under Coach Leo Jackson. Cameron Relays scheduled for March 27 and invitations issued signal a large meet ahead. The Cameron Chamber of Commerce plans its annual banquet March 9 with State Senator Jarrod Secrest as speaker and Louis McKee to be installed as president.

Internal Revenue Office Extends Hours March 6

The Cameron Internal Revenue Office will stay open Saturday March 6 from 8 00 a.m. to 1 00 p.m. in addition to regular days. F J Schultz local representative announces the extension to aid taxpayers unable to visit during normal times and to provide extra service during the income tax filing period.

Kickoff Breakfast Starts Milam Red Cross Campaign

Milam County begins the 1954 Red Cross drive with a March 1 kickoff breakfast at Milam Coffee Shop led by city chairman Woodrow Lowe. The Jamie L. Clark Memorial Campaign honors Clark of Thorndale and involves Jack W. Prescott as Milam Chapter Chairman with a team including Louis McKee Milton Schiller the Asher couple and E C Cole among others. Nine More Democratic Primary Candidates File to Run

Nine candidates filed with Chairman Max McClaren to appear on July and August primaries ballots. J. W. Miller seeks re election as County Attorney. Ida Johns for County Treasurer. Hinton H. Pruett for County School Superintendent. Grady Allen seeks re election as District Clerk. Roy C. Archer of Travis County seeks re election to the Court of Civil Appeals 3rd District. Soil Conservation Service To Sponsor Buckholts Meeting

A community education meeting sponsored by the Soil Conservation Service will be held on Monday March 8 at 7 30 p m in the Buckholts School Gymnasium. Cornelius Titsworth sponsor says the program will be a panel discussion with all attendees taking part. Carl Young and Edwin Fischer among others will be panel members. ranchers and Buckholts farmers are invited to attend with their families.

Ed McCord Remembered As One Of Milam's Unforgettable Sons

Health Unit Lists 21 Cases of Measles

Twenty one cases of measles were reported this past week by Dr John B Bryson director of Main Health Unit. Also on the uprise was influenza with ten cases. One case of diphtheria was reported. Other cases included six sore throat scarlet fever five chickenpox two gonorrhea and one meningococcal.

Gallier Twins Born at St Edward Hospital

Funeral services for Mrs. I. W. Peeler age 69, a former Rogers resident, were held in Waco at Connally's chapel with Rev. F. D. Dunlap officiating. Graveside burial followed at Rogers cemetery. She died Saturday in a Waco hospital. Survivors include sons Miles Peeler of Buckholts and Jack Peeler of Rogers.

Lt Col Massengale Receives Distinguished Flying Cross

Lt Col Herbert W Massengale of Mayerfield was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross at Mather Air Force Base California. He serves as Director of Operations and Training for the Observer Training Group and earned the DFC for meritorious service in Korea. His mother Mrs H W Massengale lives in Maysfield.

Mack Miller Sentenced Five Years in State Penitentiary

Mack Miller of San Angelo and formerly of Rockdale pleaded guilty to burglary in Milam County District Court. Judge O D Graham ordered five years in the state penitentiary after a San Angelo hearing where he had already received a six year term. Sheriff Carl Black took him to Huntsville Friday for imprisonment.

Funeral services for John Sutter aged 69 were held March 4 with Rev. George J. Duda officiating at Marek Burns Funeral Chapel at 8 50 a m and the main service at 9 a m The notice notes a continuation on page 8.

O. J. Thomas School to Open New Gym Sunday

The O. J. Thomas School will officially open its new gymnasium Sunday March 7 at 3 p.m. Principal Cr L Sadberry announced a short program with Supt W T Hanes Dr C G Swift and J J Wilson of Moore High School to speak. QO J Thomas will also speak and Leo Fuchs will cut the ribbon. The public is invited to visit the new building with its 100 by 60 foot floor, bleachers, stage, dressing rooms, and physical education rooms.

Funeral Services Held For Thomas Ward

Thomas Fisher Ward, 40, died Tuesday at 4 a.m. at St. Edward Hospital after a sudden illness. A farmer from Yarrelton, formerly of Bell County, he is survived by his widow and a ten year old daughter Nell Ann Ward of Yarrelton, plus his father. (See Thomas Ward-Page 4).

City To Accept Bids On Cost Of Erecting Street Markets Here

The City Council voted to accept bids for erecting street markets after a request from the Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Horstmann appointed Robert Weems to chair the Street Committee with Postmaster John Hays and Chamber manager Bob Abel assisting. The project aims to advance civic improvement and government cooperation in Cameron.

Fire Destroys Five Room House in Milam County

A five room house at the intersection of U S Highways 77 and 36 was consumed by a Monday fire sparked by a three year old. Cameron Fire Department fought the blaze about an hour but water pressure hampered efforts. Milam Sheriff Carl Black said the child lit paper from a gas heater, igniting clothing. The house owned by Mrs Dick Harris and occupied by Mr and Mrs Johnny Fortenbury suffered about 7500 dollars in losses.
