A historic Alcatraz break inspires local shock and a three day Frontier Days in Cameron during Western Week. North Milam communities rally for Red Cross blood drive, with strong business and resident support and hopes of meeting goals by weekend.
Helen Soriano twenty two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs J D Soriano of Cameron is improving in a local hospital from serious burns suffered last week at her home. Doctors say she had first and second degree burns when she fell into a small washtub of hot water and burned over one third of her body.
Cameron soldiers of the 49th Armored Division at Fort Polk undergo final separation physicals at the U S Army Hospital Port Polk to complete processing for release from active duty. About 20 000 reservists and guardsmen are examined at 60 per hour with completion aimed by June 30. The 49th Division, largely Texans from 74 cities, plans to depart Texas August 6-7 with release at midnight August 9. Training continues for 100 men of Company C 3rd Medium Tank Battalion 112th Armor amid mobility tests for III STRAC deployment readiness. Major General Harley B West notes normal training through July 15 then homeward focus. Administrative work involves 23 separation forms per man plus updating 25 existing forms before August. The mobilization is hailed as the most efficient partial mobilization in American history.
The Rev and Mrs FE Jewell Strong were honored at family night at the First Methodist Church as he prepares to leave Cameron for Crockett where he will lead the First Methodist Church Sunday. He has served in Mineola Rusk and other East Texas churches and is a Southern Methodist University graduate with a bachelor of divinity.
Four women’s groups join in Cameron and North Milam to raise 3100 for Red Cross services. They will canvass Cameron residences Thursday evening, with progress reported by H. D. Maxwell. Local drives include Maysfield surpassing its goal, while Burlington and Branchville communities contribute toward the emergency fund and blood program.
Days of the Old West arrive in Cameron for Western Week on July 5 6 and 7. Entertainment includes street skits and related shows as part of the festival lineup.
Funeral services for Mrs. J H Scarborough 83 were held at First Baptist Cameron with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. She lived in Milam County most of her life and was the last survivor of ten siblings. A mystery cowboy will haunt the city and a Shetland pony giveaway accompany Western Week events including a July 7 queen contest shows and a street dance. The Gaited and Quarter Horse Shows are slated for July 7 and July 14 respectively with further schedules to be announced.
The civil case Wayne Decker versus Wade Augustus Brooks and others settled before jury. Decker sought 179000 dollars for injuries from a July 1961 auto crash that killed his sister and a friend. settlement amount was about 15000 dollars officials said.
An editorial urges support for the North Milam Red Cross Blood program, stressing its life saving role through the Bloodmobile. It calls for 3100 in funding, notes local Cameron blood contributions, and urges community members to host or accept volunteer drives and calls for donations.
The Texas Highway Department announces 15 miles of improvement projects in Milam County on SH 36 US 77 and US 79 from Milano areas. Work by Dobbs and Wedge rt a San Benito contractor starts June 18 and lasts about 10 working days with added surfacing and level up. Traffic will use existing surface with barricades and flagmen for safety. motorists urged to slow and follow signs.
Funeral services were held Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Cameron for Mrs Meta Thompson McCown born December 28 1872 in Corinth Mississippi daughter of John Franklin and Mary Thompson. She moved to Cameron in 1886 married Robert L McCown in 1902 and died with her husband and son John Franklin referenced among the deceased. Survived by two daughters Mrs A J Montgomery of Igsaquati Washington and Mrs Harry Tay of Cameron and son Robert L McCown of Ennis plus three grandchildren. She served as Deputy County Clerk under Miss Lillian Atkinson and Tromer Nabours and was active in the Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church. Pallbearers listed as Dayton McLane Alvin Dusek Carl Black William Moran Melvin Ford and Albert Collins. honorary pallbearers Mortis Eplen August Gurecky John Hayes Lester Williams Richard Williams Ivan Vogelsang J Ke Johnson.
Milam County Commissioners vote unanimously to raise salaries of county and district elective officials by 10 percent effective immediately. The boost adds about 6,200 dollars yearly to 19 posts including eight constables and four commissioners, with no tax rate or valuation changes. Judge Don Humble cites surplus funds and a cost of living adjustment amid public questions from Farm Bureau and home demonstration advocates.
