Poage Announces Major Alcoa Plant in Milam County

W R Poage confirms Aluminum Company of America will build an 80 million dollar aluminum plant in Milam County in a joint venture with Texas Power and Light. The facility will use nearby lignite as fuel, provide 85 000 ton annual output, and sit on 12 000 acres acquired by McAlister Fuel in the region.

East Texas Chamber outlines county surveys and budget hearings

L Van Perkins Cameron Delegate and Hubert M Harrison announced completion of 25 county surveys by July 15 with 33 more due by October 1. The program rates counties on a five point yardstick and plans August budget hearings in 12 East Texas counties to engage local leaders and taxpayers.

The group discussed August encampment at Bastrop park, upcoming planning meetings, budget hearings, and 4-H activities led by Mrs. Alice Hughes. Milam County first 1951 cotton bale receives premium

Milam County celebrates its first 1951 bale of cotton brought to Weems Gin by W McClaren Jr. weighing 625 pounds with 850 pounds of seeds. The chamber offers a $100 premium and ginning, bagging, and ties are donated. other farms bring in early bales and premiums rise with year’s opening cotton.

Texas September draft call totals 619 men

Brigadier General Paul Wakefield said September draft for Texas will be 619 men as nationwide calls reach 34,180. He noted August was raised to 772 and July quota is 367 while Texas has about 29,000 drafted since Korea began, with around 75,000 examined. He added monthly calls may continue regardless of a cease-fire.

Army May Add Two Guard Divisions in Korea Rotation Plan

Washington reports the army may pull two national guard divisions to Korea as part of an accelerated rotation, aiming to remove about 112000 veterans from frontline duty by next November. Cotton Bales Ginned In County County First of Season

J R Young of Jones Prairie delivered the first bale to Matyastik Gin in Clarkson late Monday July 23 but was not ginned until early Tuesday morning. J D Blacak and R L Bishop, both Jones Prairie and Clarkson farmers, followed with bales Tuesday. Total ginned now five in the county per local information.

Sand Grove Revival Set to Begin July 30

A revival at Sand Grove Church of Christ will start July 30 with Brother Billy Orton of Lawrenceburg Tennessee leading the services. The young preacher comes well recommended and will conduct evening services daily. Regular Sunday services are at 2 PM. the public is invited.

Local People Return From Colorado Vacation Trip

Mr and Mrs Ray Lester Mr and Mrs Henry Liebman and Lee Marek Jr returned from a vacation in Colorado. They spent several days in Denver enjoyed the snow and a Pikes Peak trip before returning to Cameron and visiting Mrs Lester’s sister Mrs Kelly Payne in Paducha.

A church event will be held Saturday August 11 at 8 P M with a cordial invitation to attend. The notice also urges all community children to enroll in the school.

Fort Hood Named Critical Defense Area for Housing

The Defense Production Administration lists Florence Killeen near Fort Hood and Gray Air Force Base Lone Star as critical defense areas. The move eases credit restrictions on building new housing amid a 2,500 unit deficit and a large war plant employing about 2,000 workers by January 1. Crop prospects fade as Cameron area endures heat wave

Milam County farmers face a severe drought with forecasts of little relief. The cotton crop is expected to be markedly smaller, hay and feed shortages worsen, and milk production drops as pastures burn under consecutive days above 100 degrees. Readings in Cameron show five days near 106 to 100 degrees.

Wild Boar Disrupts Night Patrol in Cameron Texas

Cpl Wyne E Talafuse of Love Company led a patrol and found the remains of a wild boar that had roamed through the defenses during a night of flares and a mine blast. He said the enemy seemed near but only a dead roast pig remained.
