A large Cameron crowd is expected Monday for the city’s first 1951 Dollar Day. Merchants prepared special sales offering outstanding values on items from dry goods to large appliances, aiming to establish a favorable shopping tradition for both merchants and patrons.
Cameron residents mourn Nathan Wilson aged 27 after an on the job electrocution. Henry Leibman of the T P and L says Wilson touched a live wire while installing a transformer on N Houston Street. Workmate Steve Hrozek sprang into action and pulled him away as artificial respirations were given for hours with no success.
Joe Bill Harrison son of Mrs Alma Houston has volunteered for United States Navy. He left Cameron for Dallas Recruiting Station for physical exam and requirements. A Yee High School graduate from May 1951 he worked in Cameron this summer and is brother to Thomas Harrison who joined the Navy in March. He is stationed in Maryland with the medical corps and may be sent to California after passing the exam.
A health advisory urges parents to keep children from swimming in streams reduced by drought due to disease risk. It promotes using the municipal pool inspected by the state health department, where water is tested daily to ensure safety.
Milam County expects about 294.70 to service right of way debt and 10 451.80 to the sinking fund from road bond issues. After retaining debt service, roughly 29 662.78 remains in the lateral road fund for construction or improvement, to be released on a court order. Census updates may adjust figures slightly.
Representative Poage says a certificate of necessity from Secretary Chapman is needed before Alcoa can proceed with the Rockdale Texas plant. Chapman will study other small company applications and compare proposals before deciding, Poage says after checking with officials during a Waco visit.
Judge Dan Tyson announced that construction started on U S Highway 77 on Tuesday July 31. J E LaGrone, superintendent for Thomas and Ratliff, said all necessary matters were handled and work would commence. 9.6 miles from Cameron to Burlington will be rebuilt with 300 yards of concrete to widen culverts and headwalls. Thomas and Ratliff has built farm to market roads in the county and other major highways. Families will move to Cameron during the project.
Francis Cox leaves Friday for Gunnison Colorado to join the Western State College Summer Band Camp. Cox, director of the Yee High Band for twenty years, will study under renowned bandsmen and take several bandwork courses. Mrs Cox and Kay will join for state tours and return August 19.
Mrs Valerie Williams and Sgt Paul Williams are the happy parents of a daughter born at St Edward Hospital Friday evening July 27 at 2 pm. The baby weighs six pounds three and four ounces and is named Patricia Kay. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs John McLerran of Hoyte and Mrs Abbie Williams of Cameron.
Several farmers in the Cameron area received prior approvals and purchase orders through the Agricultural Conservation Program to build a farm pond. With dry weather drying up reservoirs, farmers statewide see the benefits of earthen dams as part of ACP projects. Names listed include Frank Masar, S. B. Short, FE S. Shiney, Raymond Zawdzki, Frank J. Plachy, T. G. Wilson, Robert Kalkbrenner, Steve Salach, Ed Pavelek, George Leath, Morris Duncum, H. G. Newton, Milam Furtula, Ed Benesh, and Jewell O. Stewart.
Frank Cheeves, a Cameron businessman, is improving at St Edward Hospital. Dr. Leland Denson reports he is resting satisfactorily and will remain for several more days, with notable progress over the last three days.
Cotton in central Texas matures with rising boll weevil pressure. Scarcity of squares drives the infestation this week, based on 80 fields across several counties. Punctured squares average 11 percent in poisoned fields and 26 percent in unpoisoned fields.
At a special city council meeting Mayor A N Green announced enforcement of the dog vaccination ordinance after a 4 to 0 vote. Alderman Perkins urged a house to house canvas with City Marshall Joe Richter directing penning of dogs for 30 days to curb rabies risk.
Thomas F. Gilleland enlisted in Battery 649th Anti aircraft Artillery Battalion this week. Capt Rudolph Michalka, the unit's commanding officer, reported today. Gilleland, a truck driver, was sworn in during armory drill on Monday night and was assigned to the battery gun section.
One hundred sixty ROTC cadets from the University of Puerto Rico departed Fort Hood by train after a six week summer training stint. The group was cheered by the First Armored Division Band and will resume studies in the fall under Major L. Jordan and five officers leading the detachment on their nine day return trip to Puerto Rico.
The Vacation Bible School at All Saints Episcopal Church concluded on Wednesday per Rev. James McKeown rector. Fifteen students enrolled as ministerial students worked the past ten days beginning July 23. Helpers included Mr and Mrs David Girr and William Norgen of New York. McKeown directs the Diocese of Texas Town Country Institute activities.
Cameron completed its first 1951 fogging operation Monday night under L W Smith of the Water Department with Jim Short directing. The Chamber of Commerce bought a $50 fly and skeet machine attached to the water truck to apply a chloridane and DDT diesel oil fog, fogging commercial and eastern residential areas. preliminary reports praise effectiveness.
Weather notes from L. W. Smith report 24 days in July with 100 plus degrees. Yesterday’s high reached 102. No rain forecast locally though surrounding areas saw heavy showers Wednesday. Crops continue to burn from heat.
An old time revival began at the Little River Baptist Church on Friday July 27 with Rev. U. S. Lucky delivering gospel messages. He recently became pastor succeeding Rev. Stanley Ray who resigned to enter missionary work.
