Thomas and Ratliff Win Bid for U S 77 Contract

Bids opened June 17 by the State Highway Department for 9.6 miles on U S 77 show Thomas and Ratliff of Rogers with the lowest offer at 142571 dollars covering grading base work and two layer surfacing. Construction to start north of Cameron and tie into Falls County line to Burlington with bridges already completed.

General Wakefield appoints Dr T S Barkley medical advisor

General Wakefield informs Milam County that Dr T S Barkley of Rockdale Texas is appointed Medical Advisor for the local Selective Service Board. Dr C G Swift and Dr T L Denson of Cameron also serve in that role. Barkley’s appointment eases interviews for Thorndale and Rockdale registrants and strengthens the system.

Merchants Asked To Make Contributions

The crops and conservation committee of the Milam County Chamber of Commerce met Friday night to plan a premium for the first bale of cotton harvested in Cameron ginning in Cameron Texas. Merchants have supported this annual tradition since 1950. With dry weather, the crop may be smaller than earlier predictions, and the number of bales is not yet known.

Labor shed project advances with Robbins contract

The Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau committees met to award a $1712.36 contract to Alton Robbins to build a 59 by 28 foot labor shed at the southeast corner of the municipal airport. Bids from Roy Weems and Emil Biskup were also reviewed as progress nears a July 25 completion and $600 immediate funds are sought.

Three Youths Admit Guilty In Vehicle Thefts

Sheriff Carl C. Black reports three youths faced County Court on motor vehicle theft charges. A Rogers man pleaded guilty to driving a pickup owned by Olen Sprusell of Cameron, returned it to Rogers, and received a $50 fine plus court costs and 15 days in Milam County jail. Two Cameron youths, who worked at Hudson Station, admitted taking a car owned by Houston Hairgrove of Waco from the same station, drove it for hours, then left it there and were fined $25 each plus costs.

Patsy Hightower Seriously Ill After Hospital Transfer

Patsy Kay Hightower seven daughter of Mr and Mrs Aubrey Hightower fell from a swing Monday afternoon at the Swift home. She later grew seriously ill and was taken to St Edward Hospital then rushed to Scott and White Hospital Temple for surgery Tuesday morning. By Wednesday morning doctors reported improvement and she spoke more clearly Tuesday night.

Postponed Case Set For Fall Court

The R. G. Vaughan murder trial is reset for Monday September 3 by Judge Ed Gunn. Vaughan, indicted in the death of Jack Parker of Iowa shot at Vaughn's Place on April 28 1951, was previously scheduled June 18 but postponed due to a witness absence.

Prominent Doctor of Rockdale Dies

Dr. I. P. Sessions aged 83 died at his daughter’s home in Raymayor after a heart attack. A Navarro County native born Rice Texas October 25 1868 he practiced medicine in Rockdale for sixty years and was active in civic life. Funeral held at Philip Luckey Chapel with Rev. T. Miller Smith. burial in Rockdale Cemetery. Survivors include son C B Sessions two daughters Mrs. Tommy Beesley and Mrs. John Mohair. six grandchildren and a number of nieces.

Revival Begins At Burlington Noted Evangelist To Speak

A twelve day revival starts Wednesday night July 18 at Burlington Baptist Church. Rev Asa Hunt Jr pastor announces evangelist Rev Joe Stevens of Brenham will preach. Mrs Corkern Undergoes Treatment in Houston Hospital

Rev and Mrs P A Corkern are in Houston where Mrs Corkern is undergoing treatment at the Anderson Hospital and Clinic. They expect to stay about a week as friends express concern for her welfare. Rev Bob Walker filled the pulpit at First Baptist Church in Battetown in the pastor's absence on July 15.

Local Board No. 92 issued Call No. 15 for six Milam County and Cameron men to be inducted August 15 1951. They depart Cameron August 14 at 1 15 p m by Central Texas Bus reach Dallas by 7 00 p m and stay overnight for a Love Field induction the next morning.

House Heavily Damaged By Fire Tuesday

The home of the late Rev. P L R Humber on West 15th Street was completely destroyed by a noon Tuesday fire. Fire marshal John Eanes said oil stove explosion caused the blaze and Hubert Hardeman, living there, was present. Insurance partially covered the fixtures and house. The Volunteer fire department arrived to find the residence a complete blaze.

Herman Yezak to Be Main Speaker at Farm Bureau Meeting

Milam County Farm Bureau will meet Thursday July 19 at 8:30 PM in Cameron District Courtroom. Captain Herman Yezak of Robertson County will deliver the main address and report on the 52nd Legislature. Delegates for the Farm Bureau Institute Training School at A&M July 30 to August 2 will be named.

Bond Election Proposed For Cameron Fire Station

Cameron voters will decide on an August 7 1951 bond issue of 55000 to fund a new fire station city offices and water department equipment. The council debated site location and wage raises for street workers while postponing action on the labor shed and roping club lighting at Wilson Ledbetter Park.

Continued Drouth Costing Farmers

The Central Texas drought is costing farmers about half a million dollars daily per county agent J C Patterson of McLennan Patterson says the drought began to hurt around early July. Half grown cotton bolls are opening early in parts of Central Texas. crop prospects are short though rain could still help cotton and young grain though corn is unlikely to gain much.
