State reports 33 teachers earn doctorates in last year

Thirty three teachers sought PhD level appointments through the University of Texas Teachers' Appointment committee, signaling rising standards. Miss Miriam Wozier notes requests come from colleges and universities, with a similar trend in public schools as districts raise requirements for high school officials and others. Over supply exists in some fields, while demand for trained science and mathematics teachers remains strong. Causes include men leaving jobs for teaching, more married women entering the field, inadequately prepared applicants, and easy teacher certification.
