Watson Wins Milam District Judge Nomination

John Watson was renominated by Milam County Democrats for four years as district judge after defeating W G Gillis by more than 700 votes. Watson has served as district judge since Milam became a single district, previously serving as county judge. Gillis, former county judge and school superintendent, remained a prominent attorney but lost the race.

First Bale Of 1928 Cotton Brings $240 To C C Black

C C Black of Jones Prairie brought in the first bale of 1928 cotton Monday afternoon July 30 and received $240 for the bale including premiums. The bale weighed 447 pounds and was ginned at Batte’s No 2 gin. Cash premium of 106.25 from Cameron businessmen plus a 15.01 enhancement from seed price and merchan dise adds to the total. Extreme July dry weather hastens opening of the crop and gins are ready for 1928.

Natural gas has been turned on in the mains of the Community Natural Gas Company and consumers are now using the great utility. Plumbers are busy as stores and appliances face competition and demonstrations are planned this week to boost sales. Gas will reach every part of the city in a few days.

Convention Saturday Chairman J B White will call the county convention to order at three after the executive committee canvasses returns from last Saturday's primary. Two well known Cameron men Elmo Vaughn and Lyons McCall open the Elmo Vaughn Dry Goods Company in a building owned by Dr. G B Taylor directly west of the Court House. They bring a complete new stock of goods and are expected to succeed in Milam and neighboring counties.
